Epic Win: Laser Beam Portrait Backgrounds

laserbackgroundsmall

Submitted and Written by katellis

The laser beam portrait background. My parents were too cheap to pay the extra $5 for this epic background, and I’m still bitter about it.

The portrait background of the future, brought to you by the ’80s.

  1. VX says:

This was always the best background for epic 80s school photos.

  2. ajohnson153 says:

If you are still bitter about not getting the portrait background you wanted then you need to get down off your cross use the wood to build a bridge and get over it.

    • Equestrian 2010 says:

I believe the correct reaction to this caption is laughter. Its funny. Its obviously a joke. So please, for all of our sakes, take YOUR bitterness elsewhere.

    • HellHathNoFury says:

Build a bridge? To get over it? Why a bridge? They wanted laser background, not a bridge.
Oooh, I get it! Haha, that’s so unique, original and hilarious!
seriously. That insult is so old, the first time I heard it I fell off my dinosaur and broke my wooden underwear.

  3. theblackdog says:

Your photographer charged extra for this one? They suck.

  4. Doobop says:

Now i wish I was school-age in the 80’s, if just for this :’(

  5. powermuffin says:

Why did all those standard portrait backgrounds (that didn’t cost an extra $5) look like finger painting or worse? Was vague smudges really the best they could do?

  6. whatwhat says:

Man, this one never even showed up as an option, when I was in school! We had a choice of a misty grey-blue background, or a black background–the latter came with a ghostly (and very creepy) double-exposure of your head. The rich kids’ parents all bought it because it was trendy and arty at the time. Now it’s just weird.

    I want the Max Headroom background now ;_;

  7. Rin says:

    I had this in Kindergarten…

  8. HellHathNoFury says:

I like to think of it as my light-saber collection being displayed behind me, since they wouldn’t let me wear my Storm Trooper uniform. parachute pants just don’t scream ‘Jedi Knight’.

  9. Juniper Jupiter says:

I always hated this background. :( Blugh!

It shows how absolutely dated the portrait is, as if the Jersey hair didn’t already!! And it clashed with whatever you wore in the portrait, even if was the same color!!

    Really!

  10. Andi says:

I think my parents let me have this one in 5th grade..when it had stopped being so cool cuz everyone else had already had it and they finally friggin figured out that if they put a color film over the light it made the misty-gray background cooler.

  11. Anonymous says:

shame they don’t have these nowadays….

  12. wvgirl says:

Funny, I was a kid in the 80’s, and I always saw my friends and some relatives’ pictures with this background, but in all the schools I attended, it was never an option. Or maybe it was and my mom didn’t want to pay extra. Hmmm. . . . .

  13. HeSheWe says:

OMG! I’m looking across the room and seeing my old school photo with that background!

  14. BC says:

“My parents were too cheap to pay the extra $5 for this epic background, and I’m still bitter about it.”

    Get over yourself!

    • shalindria says:

BC, what is wrong with you?!? Please, don’t post here if you have absolutely not sense of humor. I am ashamed to have the same initals (my real name) as you.

Been there…have pix to prove it! lol

  16. utaduta says:

i always wanted this background! all the rich kids got it. i just got dull blue or gray. now that i have school aged kids i want to get them fancy backgrounds, but the hubby won’t buy them! what cheesy background will he save them from… hummm. ;)

  17. man, that’s such a cool option! now alls we get is smudged up, stonewashed colors that look black and white in the year book anyways…

  18. Miroku says:

Man, if I had that option for school pictures way back when, I
    would have dressed like this.

  19. rickybobby says:

I had a Trapper Keeper that looked like that

After that, I went with the old-school denim binders and wrote and drew all over them and was waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay cooler for it.

  20. Susie says:

Have you seen the website We Got Lasers? http://www.laserportraits.net/ People post their laser-background pictures there.

  21. Kip. says:

I had no idea that 80’s highschools provided Laser Portraits (for a $5 fee). Back in MY day… which was about 4 years ago… I could pick between 8 different coloured backgrounds that looked a lot like the “cloud” filter on photoshop. Lazy!

  22. meredith says:

My mom never paid for the double-portrait either. You know, where you have your regular picture, and then your disembodied head?

  23. Will B. says:

My mom liked the weird tree background they had (they even had a fake plastic log you’d rest your arms on), but one year I convinced her to let me get this one :-)

  24. anon says:

Here’s a whole site with old portraits. It has a few of those double exposure photos, but lots of other things as well.

  25. Jadeder says:

it didnt matter what was my background, i still looked dorky as all hell in it.

  26. Anonymous says:

This reminds me of public school. Note to self: Stop browsing this site.

  27. Jeanna says:

There were even better backgrounds like purple glitter/stars and even more lazer-y goodness than the example pic. We all may have looked pretty dorky but at the time it was awesome.

  28. Artistradio says:

Those backgrounds are so awesome that I incorporate them in most of my drawings. :D

  29. Mary says:

I actually had this background in my kindergarten photos in the 90s. What struck me as a bit funny was that I had it in a strict private school. It seems so odd for private school pictures, you know?

  30. Anonymous says:

LAZERZ!!!!!! Omg, I can’t believe they made it!!! I freak out about these. Anyone ever been to sexypeople blog? I flip out when I see LAZERZ!!!

  31. Rachel E. says:

    So awesome.
