Epic Win: Number Munchers

Submitted by A Ng

(I have no idea why that clip is ten minutes long. I would skim it if I were you…)

Ah, Number Munchers — one of the original math games. I’m still pretty good at basic mathematical functions, and I owe it all to you, Number Munchers. Hooray!

Though Number Munchers is an epic win in its own right, does anyone else think Math Blaster is just as worthy of the title? And I’m talking the DOS version of Math Blaster where you did a subtraction problem and got to shoot aliens, not garbage.

Incorrect source or offensive?

    This looks really boring

  2. Nema says:

Oh man this was fun to do on our Apple 2e computers in school since we had a limited number of Oregon Trail and Odell Lake floppies… I was also like 9 or 10 at the time too. XD

I thought this was really cool when I was younger. Ohhh, those graphics. :]

  4. 1wolffan says:

I always liked running the Prime-Number level set, because I could get the furthest the fastest. But that may have been Super Number Munchers.

  5. Libby says:

I loved Math Blaster on our Apple 2C

And that was the last time I was good at math.

  14. halfmadgenius says:

This game was so awesome! Is there an emulator or flash game for this? I would love for my kids to be able to play it one day

  15. Anonymous says:

Ah number munchers, one of the clever games of the time that got kids to be entertained and actually learn at the same time.

You could never get a kid now-a-days to play something like this. Even if the graphics were updated.

  16. Verdecat says:

Wow! I remember playing this on my PC Jr. Along with The DOS version of Math Blaster and Alge Blaster and all that stuff.

  17. notolaf says:

I still have this in my classroom.

We had this and Oregon Trail on a bunch of floppy disks at after-school daycare at my elementary school. Those were the only games we had. That was all we needed. D: I think there was a Word munchers one as well; I like that one so much better. :)

  27. vi31 says:

I was my school’s reigning bitch at Prime Number Crunchers. We didn’t get this until 5th or 6th grade (on the aforementioned Apple 2es in the monochrome green) and I just LOVED this. Number Munchers FTW!

  28. vmp says:

this was my fav game when i was a kid! i’m 22 now and i played this on dos! basically one of the best epic win games ever.

  29. EroKappa says:

OMG I loved this game! It was one of my faves. I am 30 now and remember playing it on the black screens when everything was bright green and it was on a 5 inch floppy! When I was in school you had to earn the ability to play this game. If you completed all of your typing assignments in computer class you were able to play this game or the Oregon Trail! I always loved Number Munchers. Hmmm Maybe that is what led to me getting my accounting degree?

    THANK YOU!!

  30. Sarah says:

*gasp* I had completely forgotten about this game! I loved it and the word one. Must find more videos!

  31. Troggles says:

In school, we played this too often… I salute the troggles.

  32. random says:

My first experience with computers was an old Macintosh from the mid-80s with a whole bunch of educational games on it.

I remember there being a humongous list of games and we were forced to scroll down the list and choose a game by typing in the number that corresponded with the game. The class would spend an hour just playing computer games. I recall Number Munchers/Word Munchers, and a whole bunch of other games on the computer. I also recall sucking at most of them XD.

It was like this until the school got new iMacs for a new computer lab across the building.

  33. E says:

Man all these games were amazing but I remember one where you were a yellow blob and had to run around solving puzzles and one of the bad guys was a sun looking character that moved every time you did… does anyone remember the name of that game? I’ve been trying to look for it for a while now…
