Epic Win: I Dream of Jeannie

Submitted by obi wan kenobi

Great show with a great theme song. It just me, or is I Dream of Jeannie > Bewitched? That’s up for debate!

(Actually, when casting the role of Jeannie, the show’s creator wanted to make sure that it didn’t go to someone who too closely resembled Elizabeth Montgomery from Bewitched.)

Incorrect source or offensive?

  1. Doobop says:

    Can anyone elaborate on this?

  2. Wyvern says:

I Dream of Jeannie was so much better than Bewitched. It had astronauts, for cryin’ out loud. And I dare say Jeannie is cuter than Samantha, and better dressed (aside from that whole 60’s bellybutton issue. XP)

    • Phil says:

      +100

      (1) Astronauts + NASA = uber cool. They even had episodes where Major Nelson went to space and Jeanie appeared up there!
      (2) Barbara Eden was INCREDIBLY HOT in that Jeannie outfit. Evey boy who grew up in that era “dreams” of jeannie. :)

    • Naoyusimi says:

I liked both, but Jeannie was better! I mean, I wanted the Jeannie costume, her bottle, her power (no corny rhymes, just a blink!), Tony was HOT!

(Hmmm, perhaps this was my first brush with a BDSM relationship, too . . . )

  3. Ela13 says:

I really liked both of the shows, but I Dream of Jeannie is definitely better! Epic Win!

  4. Yuna says:

I loved I Dream of Jeannie. It was one of my favorite shows when I was a kid. Didn’t care too much for Bewitched; hardly watched that show. I remember being a little girl and my grandmother made me a “Jeannie” costume for Halloween; how it looked like the original. Also, I shoped and shoped (no internet back then) until I finally found a “Jeannie” bottle to go with my costume.

  5. NO CARRIER says:

It just hit me that Jeannie and Genie are homophones. Good grief.

  6. Miroku says:

I loved I Dream of Jeannie. A fun show if you ask me.

  7. in_a_box says:

Never! Bewitched will forever be greater than IDOJ.

  8. //Ann says:

Bewitched! Samantha was a classy lady. (Eliz Montgomery was a classy lady.) Jeannie was spoiled and petulant. (Barbara Eden is a classy lady.)And Sam could do ANYTHING, and didn’t have too live in a bottle. Although she was never able to solve the problem of the marvelous mutating Darrens.

    • Adamas says:

I blame the mutating Darrens on Endora.

Both were good shows but I just liked Bewitched better. Samantha’s family was a riot!

    • whatwhat says:

“Hey, I just realised… Dick York, Dick Sargent–Sergeant York!”

    • Naoyusimi says:

But, Darren was spoiled and petulant! Always demanding that his wife CHANGE for him, stop using her powers . . . typical double standard: Men tend to whine that women are trying to “change” them; here, he’s doing it to curb her power . . . feminist backlash! (Of course, I know that IDoJ was, too . . . I just liked “Jeannie” more. :-D )

  9. CaliforniaDave says:

Barbara Eden helped me get through puberty…along with Dawn Wells, Dian Parkinson, and Barbara Feldon.

  10. SallySweet says:

Always preferred Jeannie over Bewitched, not sure why though. It also might be because I’m a big Sidney Sheldon fan…

  11. peanut butter opera says:

I can remember the theme song to IDoJ, but not Bewitched. IDoJ wins. :D

  12. catgirl says:

I was just a little kid when this was on TV. I remember seeing the cartoon opening and then being really disappointed to find out that it’s not actually a cartoon. When I was older I saw it on Nick at Night a few times, but I never really got into it. I guess the show is meant to be most appealing to preteen boys and older men who don’t have internet access.

  13. k says:

The best Jeannnie was the first one in black & white. Jeannie had a brain in that one, but someone had to dumb her down for all the rest of the shows : (
I loved both Elizabeth Mongomery and Barbara Eden, such talented women and very charismatic, but both their shows made me so mad at the misoginist story lines.

    • Naoyusimi says:

Yes, they were misogynistic, a backlash against feminism, but they were a product of their times. I can still watch them and enjoy them. You notice how, even though, overtly, the men have to be “listened to”, the wives “win” in the end, usually through indirectly doing what they wanted to, needed to, all along? That part was good. And in any controlling relationship, that’s how the one with less power has to function: indirectly and sometimes, deviously and through manipulation. Women get accused of it all the time, as if it were a product of their nature, when really it’s a product of the power structure they were put in for centuries.

Oh, and BTW, there was no “first one” (if you mean a different series). I believe the series just switched to shooting in color, as some TV series were already doing at that time. I think Jeannie definitely had a brain in most of the shows—in fact, it seemed like she was smarter than Major Nelson—but I can think of a few where she did seem pretty ditzy . . . I wonder if it depended on who was writing the episode?

  14. Sassy says:

I went as Jenie for halloween when i was in middle school, no one knew who i was (disapointing) but i did get an ass load of extra candy so it was worth it lol

  15. Nekomancer says:

I loved both series. But i agree that Barbara Eden was hotter ;) .

  16. Adsy says:

I Dream Of Jeannie is on TV Here in Australia on a TV channel called GO!
recently it was the episode where they travel back in time to an old western town
    but its really good!
    loved it as a kid

  17. Ace says:

This show is hosted on Hulu now! epic win!
