Epic Win: Game Boy Color

Once Upon A Win

Submitted by inthebatman627

I owned an Atomic Purple Game Boy Color (I remember my local videogames store having a disproportionately high number of unsold yellow ones), and remember it being a huge upgrade from my Game Boy Pocket (also an epic win, BTW). I also loved the backward compatibility. Combined with the original Game Boy, Nintendo sold over 118 million Game Boys worldwide!

Okay, now I know there are a dozen of you who will comment about how “the original Game Boy is the REAL epic win.” We’ve already got you covered.

» 88 Blasts From The Past

  1. First Jerk says:

    FIRST! :P

    • Indian says:

This is totally racist. Why is there a special Color gameboy? So white people get the old one and colored people get the new one?

  2. Second Jerk says:

    SECOND

  3. Third Jerk says:

    THIRD!

  4. halfmadgenius says:

loved my game boy color. Got it for christmas with my very first pokemon game. I still have it, it lives on the back of the toilet for when I or my fiancee are going to be there for a minute.

  5. Beta says:

I had two. One was the purple see-through one, and the other was really sweet. It was half blue and half yellow (yellow on top), and the yellow part had some pokemon on it (mainly around the screen). I’ve never heard of anyone else having one. Anyone ever hear of it before?

    • Brandon_ha says:

had it too. It came with pokemon yellow, the one where you can only get pikachu.

    • FAIL-IEN says:

Oh, that’s a special edition originally released in Japan as an exclusive model, only available at Pokemon Centers in Japan. Strangely, a handful of these made it into the US. They also released an orange one (the original Pokemon Center unit; the most commonly knocked-off), and released a gold-to-silver painted model, among others.

  6. Newbie says:

Hey, I just got done digging mine out of the basement to see if it works still.

  7. 53zero24 says:

I spent the weekend playing Tetris on my teal game boy color and Wheel of Fortune on my purple one. They haven’t let me down once in the last 10 years.

  8. toribug11 says:

i had the see-through purple one. im so pissed that i lost it!!! i had that thign untill maybe ‘05, and then it vanished. i’ll have to go to Ebay and look for one.

    • Burdgerdoodle says:

ATOMIC PURPLE FTW. I still have mine in my electronics drawer, and it still plays Pokemon Silver :) Still even has its jewel stickers from 1999…

      • ledzep says:

i somehow lost my pokemon silver! i was depressed for like a month then i got the gold and it made me feel a little better… i also had the blue one and my bro had the yellow one with the pikachu edition. and is it weird that i actually got all of the pokemon and got my lineup all to lvl 100?

  9. Joei says:

Mines the dark blue/purple one on the right of the picture! And still works perfectly and is VERY well loved! Sat by my bed for my old school Tetris needs!

  10. nick says:

I have two purple, one see-through purple, light blue and the original gameboy. i still play them

  11. sara s says:

Yeah, I remember these things. After stealing my sister’s Gameboy Pocket for three years to play Link’s Awakening and Pokemon, I saw the add for a Pokemon-themed GBC! I asked my parents for it and they got a Cobalt Blue GBC…which is still awesome! I went on to get a Cobalt Blue GBA, and a Cobalt Blue DS, it’s great~. Sometimes I line them up and sigh.

One of the best games I had, other than Pokemon, was this pirated Chinese game, with an unofficial Gold, Silver, Pong, Croc, and then the same games with different language settings. Whenever the red light started to flicker, I’d save more often…and even after the batteries died…you could play a few minutes a day until you got some more–!

  12. the_gail says:

I still use mine. I got a purple on right when they came out and my brothers were so jealous.

  13. magenter says:

hey Beta i had the half yellow/half blue one! i got it with pokemon yellow (still the best pokemon game imo, simply because pikachu followed you around and you could talk to him). i still have it, and it still works great :] oh, and it came with a pokemon carrying case too!

  14. skycaptain says:

i had a yellow gamevoy color and the first game i got for it was Mulan xD

    • Doobop says:

I got the Disney Aladdin game. All I remember is trying to jump over some dude with a rope and he just kept KILLING ME!

  15. vanessa says:

got that for xmas one year! my sister and i had yellow and my brother had blue! loved it!

  16. miggitdog says:

I have an atomic purple too. I also have a purple GBA and a black GBA-SP. I never got a DS and felt really old when I mentioned my SP on a board because people called me old school. xP

  17. aphiblazer says:

My dad had an original Game Boy and only played Tetris. We thought it would be a good idea to buy him a new one since the original was getting kind of worn. We bought him a Game Boy Color with Tetris in color…..we remembered later that he was color blind :)

  18. Abby says:

i still have my game boy pocket. i find it to be vastly superior to the color because i could adjust the contrast. plus…it fit in my pocket!

  19. Blake419 says:

This really makes me pine for my old pokemon red games. :(

  20. scarecrow says:

I still have my gameboy color… Which is a testament to how well made they are. Though I lost the battery cover years ago. XP

    • Gregora says:

Yeah, they’re very well made. One of my friends left his outside one night and there was a major rainstorm and once he let it dry out, it still worked. It was awesome that he didn’t need to buy a new one. :)

  21. Winman says:

Wait, an atomic purple GBC, and N64 controler, but no atomic purple DS? :(

  22. Cait says:

lol, I still have mine. When I was in the hospital as a kid, my dad and his coworkers put some money together and bought on and a Harry Potter game for me as a gift. It was so sweet~

  23. Crystal Kyuuketsuki says:

    My uncle threw mine away… it had Pokemon on it and was yellow too ;-;

  24. Anonymous says:

Game Boy color is really not old enough. The Original Game Boy is not the REAL win, it’s the only Game Boy win.

Also, maybe you want to consider writing an entry for EACH Power Rangers series while you are at it.

    • FAIL-IEN says:

Hey jackass, read the requirements: Must be over 10 years old! They were released in 1997, about the same time when the original Pokemon games were released. Don’t make dumb comments about it if you haven’t read the upload rules, jackass!

  25. Miroku says:

Loved me Atomic Purple Game Boy. Sure it was purple, but it
    was see through!

  26. Sarah Annee says:

    I still have my GameBoy Colour… somewhere… :P
My brother had the see-through purple one and I had a see-through white one. :D

  27. Ramiel5 says:

I remember trading in my broken game boy pocket (b button
died) and three gameboy games and ToysrUs gave me a color for
like 10 bucks. A win at that time. Atomic Purple was the way
to go. Still rocking it out from time to time ^.^!

  28. Mettan says:

I still have my old purple GBC. If I put some batteries in it, all I can really play is Pokemon Yellow.

  29. boing345brooke says:

My GameBoy Colour was the best – it was a green and yellow see-through Australia one =)

  30. sp3dhands says:

    POKEMON RED BITCH!

  31. agg says:

i brought my green one with me to college every year :)
i remember buying that thing i was so proud

  32. Beth says:

me and my brother still have ours. his was purple, mine was light green.

  33. OptiMiss Prime says:

So many people’s GBCs still work. :D If only they could make stuff that sturdy with today’s tech…

  34. whatwhat says:

    I went straight from GB to GBA, alas, but I dig on the GBC. Of course now I have a DS, which plays all my GB games, so I don’t use any of the GB consoles anymore ^^;;

  35. Kat says:

I still have my gameboy color and still play it occasionally xD

  36. Steffie says:

I totally still have my neon-green GBC, and love playing Pokemon Silver on it, lol. It’s an amazing game system ^_^

  37. Andreina says:

I still have my light green GBC, it’s like brand new ’cause I took great care of it, when I get nostalgic (by the way not so long ago) I play Pokemon Blue, you can’t say you lived the GBC era unless you played a pokemon game. I see most of you did :)

  38. ecf says:

The yellow was the best color! I still play mine- my favorite games were the remake of Asteroids, Pokemon Blue, and the Dragon Warrior I+II combined game. I still play dragon warrior to this day!

  39. cativorous says:

i haD a POKEMON edition with the yellow special edition

  40. FAIL-IEN says:

Oh, since I can’t edit this post, my friend (the one with the better GBC and “told me about Pokemon”) actually got me hooked on Pokemon in 1997. LONG before it became popular in America in 1998.

  41. Someone says:

I still have a working GBC and a few games, including pokemon blue.

  42. MAP says:

Boo! Classic clunky off-white gameboy from 1989 all the way!

    • FAIL-IEN says:

I agree, but until 1997 all the games played on hand-held consoles were colorless and the consoles themselves relied on dot-matrix displays. It wasn’t until 1997 that Nintendo decided to kill off the cancerous dot-matrix screens with more efficient Liquid Crystal Displays (LCD) that could support color output, thus it revolutionized the gaming world by offering a handheld console with color display that wasn’t as clunky as its former Sega rival (The Game Gear). While the original, 4 AA “Brick” will forever be a WIN, it was consoles like the Color (First with Color LCD display) and Advance SP (First with back-light and rechargeable battery) that revolutionized the way we played our games on the go, thus setting a standard for the world to follow.

  43. Riley says:

yea that was pretty awsome back in the day but i never had one parents would not get it for me :(

  44. Riley says:

oh yea whats the game boy pocket?!?

  45. barboid says:

I too had the atomic purple as well as a teal. Tried to get the Pikachu one, but the co. I bought it from sent me a plain yellow german language one instead. The GBpocket was a slimmer version of the GB original. I too have at least one of each and all the pokemons. In fact, last year I got myself a Pikachu SP so I could play my yellow game. I noticed that I never got very far (I wanted all the starter pokemon). Love all my GBs and all the games including Pokemon (which I’m STILL playing). My favorite color is blue so I tried to get every different one in blue. Yes, they ALL work. Still. I could write a novel, but I’m a GB/Pokefan from wayback. I”M the one that got my kids started!

  46. Tana says:

My first ever gaming-system was a Game Boy Color I got when I was 9. It was so awesome.

  47. Fangwulf says:

Should I mention I worked at a toy store when this came out?

  48. Blue says:

I still have mine. And still play it. I’ve only got 5 games for it, though, one of which is a Pokemon Silver that won’t save and a Hamtaro game which, although the only one actually made for the GBC (as opposed to just the classic GB), just isn’t really very fun. D: I’ve still got PKMN Red, Tetris Blast and Link’s Awakening to entertain me, though! :D

  49. Wolfenpilot687 says:

Heh, my first console…I was 6 or 7…I bought a green one with pokemon Silver with it…though a guy took my Silver (I WAS FRIGGIN’ SIX. NO IDEA.)..and I lost my GBC in a moving…*sigh* Good moments. :3 Though now I have a DS and now I can take better care of it.

  50. Stick says:

I had yellow and my brother had green.

  51. derp says:

i dont remember how it happened but i ended up with 2 game boy colors (they were both berry colored) so i could trade pokemons with myself :D it was awesome

  52. Jenni says:

I had purple, and my brothers had green and blue. Playing Kirby’s Dreamland was beyond fantabulistic.

  53. Black Blaze says:

I got my first Gameboy color on my 6th birthday, and it was the see-through purple one…along with Pokemon Yellow.

I still have it somewhere…I want to find it.

  54. ReannaExplosion says:

Lol. Still Got My Purple GB Color!
Play The Crap Out Of Some Pokemon Red.

  55. Hello says:

LOL I don’t have these but my friend did. He had a blue and im like, “DUDE lemme see that” I got a gameboy advance at this moment.

  56. Mushroom Win says:

My cousin had a red one and he would bring it with him when he visited (which was actually quite often). That’s how I started liking video games. To this day I’m totally obsessed.

  57. Gillfren says:

I had the teal one for my sixth birthday along with pokemon red, which I traded with one of my friend for pokemon yellow and it still works like a charm, although I did move on to newer versions such as the Game Boy Advance platinum edition, the cobalt GBA SP and the original DS. But I don’t really play anymore, I keep them mainly for my private collection and for those bursts of nostalgia that come up sometimes.

  58. Carter says:

okay, i cant remember wen i got mine, but i got it for one christmas way back, me nd both my brothers. we played for agess nd raced to the finish. we always got lost in seafoam islands. we played for about 2 years after we got em. now after recently diggin my gameboy color out i’ve been playin the only game i have left on my purple gameboy. pokemon red. is freakin amazin nd now im gettin ma m8s to buy em instead of new ps3 games ahah lol.

  59. DizzyEmili says:

WHOAAA~ I had the clear-ish purple one. I remember I about pissed my pants when I got it for Christmas. I was so excited to see my Pokemans in color. D’: Beautiful.

  60. Tigerwings says:

I remember that I had a blue one! Could never get past the spongebob game! What am I saying? *Runs to room to stroke DSi*

  61. Luna says:

I had have the “berry” one (aka pink). Yes, have. First and only gameboy of any variety that I ever got, bought it with Christmas money from my grandparents. I remember that the gameboy itself cost me $70, the Super Mario Bros cartridge I got to go with it, $30. This was probably scant months before Gameboy colors became obsolete and the rest of the world moved on to whatever came next.

We’re also stuck on Play Station 2, PS3 was out, I think, by the time my sis and I convinced my parents to get us one. Before that, we still had her ancient Nintendo console (that predated Nintendo 64).

You don’t even want to know how long DVDs had been out before we finally managed to convince my parents we needed a DVD player (they were convinced that we could wait until our VCR died, which it was showing no signs of doing anytime soon).

  62. Alistaro says:

Ah, I do love my super mario land dx.

  63. Hannah F. says:

I had the clear, see-through one. I liked seeing the circuitry.
