Epic Win: Grow-Your-Own Crystals Kit
Submitted and Written by Mike Kennedy
i can remember when i was eight waking up each morning at 6 AM checking to see if my crystals had grown any…good times.
(Disclaimer: there’s some Engrish going on in that video.)
The best: growing your own rock candy. Now if only I could’ve grown my own Sour Patch Kids, I would’ve never left the house.

My fiance and I just grew our own crystals last month! It was a fun little reminder of childhood. Now we have bright blue crystals all over the house.
This is totally fake. Photoshopped. Watch me for some real science.
I used to love the little trees made of card, that you stood in a weird dish, and the next day, you had ‘beautiful crystals’. They looked like cotton candy, and had a similar durability.
When I was old enough to use REAL CHEMICALS (ahem) my mom bought me a set, where you could make proper crystals. They were great til you tried to get them out of the little plasitc tub… hey, who wouldn’t want a crystalized plastic trough!?
Ha! That’s actually kinda awesome that this should happen to show up here. I had just bought a kit on sale for growing crystals last week! Thought “Man, I remember that growing up, and it was cool!”
WIN.
Man, I need to make some rock candy.
I was just thinking that.
I’m so jealous – I never had this sort of thing when I was a kid!
There is a more adult make-your-own-crystals experiment. The new Trailer Trash Meth Lab Playset!
Oooh, can I pick that one up at Wal*Mart?
I seem to remember how every other instruction ste was a parental warning to keep your kids from eating any of it XD
My parents were cheep and wouldn’t buy the kits.
Instead we went to the library, hunted up some do-it-yourself recipe and grew alum crystals. Gota say, that was probably way cooler. The crystals wern’t as big, but doing it from scratch was an adventure. ^^
I remeber having these as a kid. They didnt work for $hit.
Mine never really crystalized… They just turned into wierd colored rocks. I still love crystals though. W-I-N.
I’m just lucky that the crystals dissolved again if you put them back in water. My brother and I grew ours on my mom’s piece of the Berlin Wall (I was eight or so and there was this wonderfully convenient rock lying in a box). She wasn’t too happy…
I had these given to me in middle school, the crystals worked, but the small shards were ridiculously sharp and therefore it was impossible to handle the crystals
I also think that these crystals are not original they are made from photoshop or any other software.
I wanted one so bad but I was 2 years to young by the age guidelines. I remember trying so hard to convince my mom I was mature for my age. Still never got my kit.
Call me paranoid, but does this look like a grow-your-own-kryptonite kit to anyone else?
I bought that when I was 10…tried growing one, and failed miserably.
My Dad made me some of these. We grew them is a small fishtank we had on top of our tv. Somehow we forgot about them until they literally filled the tank and grew over the sides…
