Epic Win: Care Bears

Submitted by A Stein
Speaking of Care Bears, this franchise of plush, colorful teddy bears were a staple of ’80s childhoods. Like many toys of the era, the Care Bears eventually found their way into a television series and (I believe) three movies.
In 2007, the Care Bears were reintroduced with the intention of ruining your fondest childhood memories. Mission accomplished. Well, at least Robot Chicken has a pretty funny Care Bears spoof.

I loved care bears! Though there was this one episode with professor coldheart that always scared me, I think when he (she?) kidnapped the kids and sucked the energy out of them and that gave me nightmares for a week!
My favorite was cozy heart penguin!
That penguin was a “care bear cousin” – but still cute! I loved LionHeart!
His name was Brave Heart.
I had a Care Bear growing up. I ended up leaving mine at my grandparents house once and I couldn’t next it back until the next time we saw them, which was a few months later.
The one I have, I’ve had since I was a baby, and still sits on my bed.
I had Care Bears toys as a kid (see link) and I’ve never had cuter toys. I wish I had all of them.
I loved care bears! I loved that there was a grumpy one, along with all the happy, lovey ones.
The new care bears are so weird looking!
i loved care bears! my favorite was grumpy and the care bear cousins.
Grumpy Bear was there not just to be grumpy, but to teach kids that it’s perfectly normal to have grumpy days, as long as they’re tempered with good days – that’s why there’s a heart falling in among the raindrops.
My favourites were tied – Grumpy and Harmony, but both originals and not any of the remade versions.
Srsly? who got stoned and posted this?
I still have my Care Bear, Birthday Bear, which I received on my first birthday. I grew up calling him Cake Baby and now may look a mess but I’ll always keep him!
Now Shrieky and Beastly are gone, and Grumpy bear was retired. The Care Bears don’t have their wacky, sometimes “scary” adventures, but sugar-coated “love-love-love” acid trips. Kids can handle excitement, y’all.
Yeah… I’m pretty sure I had all the carebear stuffed toys including the carebear cousins which came later. I was obsessed. I used to practice the carebear stare because I thought the starting would magically clean up all my toys for me. Little did I know it was meant to fight evils much larger than messes.
the best movies to watch while tripping
If you tie your shoelaces then you will not trip.
Win
I grew up in the 90’s & only knew them with the cousins. I’ve seen the reintroduced bears & bought one of Grumpy. He has a huge head, a little body & looks like a baby version but I love him. Currently I have a small figuring of Wish Bear on my desk, they have them in those gumball vending machines for $1 each here.
Speaking from experience?
We saw a wall of large plush Care Bears on the back wall of Hot Topic a couple of years ago, and my daughter said it looked like they were being held hostage.
She got one from the ambulance/firemen when I broke my leg something like 15 years back, and she still has it. she was 5 or 6 at the time.
Care Bears are something that I totally took for granted when i was little and SHOULD’VE appreciated them.. but I grew to love them more as a young teen than i ever did as a child. I hear they suck at morals now though..
The original Care Bears where the Fruits of the Holy Spirit (Galations 6:22-23). A sneeky way of teaing Christian Principles without being “Preachy”. hardly anybody knew they were getting bible lessons nor did they care. They just loved the stories.
Uhm, no. Just no.
I don’t know where you got your religious freakdom rhetoric, but maybe you should put it RIGHT back where you found it.
Talk about ruining your childhood, blegh.
What is religious freakdom about teaching kids love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, humility, and self-control? The world could use a bit more of that.
I loved the care bears as a kid-my mom even taped like 6 hours of the cartoon for me-without commercials!! I don’t like the new ones, though. They changed some of their colors and tummy pics-Champ bear is not blue, and Share bear is supposed to have a milkshake with two straws, not two lollipops on her belly! (I just read on Wiki that it was changed because sharing straws might spread germs. Oh, no! We can’t have that!) An what’s with the lame new bears? Amigo bear and Superstar bear?!
Amigo Bear? Good christ. I’m guessing that’s to be politically correct and prove they’re not racist. Even though the care bears are every color of the rainbow…?
Wow, I haven’t seen this.. but it sounds like the new series is quite the fail!
I couldn’t agree more. The new Care Bears just SUCK. However, I have grown up owning a mini stuffed Share Bear with the lollipops. On a side note, anyone know why Funshine was changed from female to male?
I love care bears!!! I love the originals though. Not these anorexic ones on the wb or channel four nowadays. I have the original-i guess you’d call it a pilot-episode that’s from the 80s and its about professor coldheart turning kids who dont care into weird little green things that make a honking noise when they fall on their butt!!! I also like the original movie (im not sure if it’s the first) about Alice in Wonderland and an evil magician. Sadly, it’s incredibly hard to find now. Netflix doesn’t carry it, and neither do movie stores.
I still have my stuffed Tenderheart Bear on the guest bed in our house. He went to college with me. I used to drive a friend of mine nuts singing “I wanna be a Care Bear” while wandering the halls in high school…
Good times. Light and fluffy and a reminder not to take life so damned seriously…
I don’t wanna be a cook or a fireman, I don’t wanna play trombone in a marching band, I just wanna be a Care Bear like you!
what are you guys talking about?!?! the only thing more terrifying than a care bear is… well… actually i can’t think of anything… D:
One of the truly funny things is that a lot of really sociopathic PVP-obsessed MMO players call those whose game play doesn’t include trying to dominate and terrorize others “Care Bears” – when THEY are the ones that act like the spoiled brat pre-schoolers that the Care Bears were supposed to teach life lessons to…
I just want to be the only one here who will say that, even as an absolute devotee of Care Bears as a child, the new models introduced in 2007 are many, MANY times cuter and cleverer than the originals. And there’s even an EVIL Care Bear, Grizzly! How can you people not embrace change when it tastes sooo goooood….
EPIC FAIL
Those bears sure did care.
I’m just pleased because my young nieces are now able to share something I adored as a child, and it’s wonderful to watch them find their reasons to love the ‘bears.
I have been collecting Care Bears since I slept in a crib. I probably one of the biggest Care Bear fans out there. I am currently in the process of collecting all of the original stuffed animals. I have a fairly large collection of 80’s paraphernalia. And right now as I am typing this, I am curled up in my bed decked out with Care Bear sheets with my Good Luck Bear. It’s really not as extreme as it sounds. but anyways, I love the Care Bears
.
WISH BEAR!!!! Weee hooo! She’ll be at Naru2U! Tiny little voice, so much fun. (Stephanie Beard) I had 2 bears growing up but I don’t know what the names are anymore.
WOw, i really loved Care Bears. My girlfriend annie loved bears so much so i also love, actually the reason is i loved care bear is my g.f, if my girlfriend is getting angry or not talking to me then i’ll gift her a big teddy bear so she is getting so happy…
I have almost all the original plush carebears… Fullsize and mini!
Thanks Grandma L!!
Whenever I’m really stressed I go online and print out some Care Bear coloring pages and get out my crayons. The nostalgia always calms me down.
