Epic Win: Polly Pocket Compact

Once Upon A Win

Submitted by M Morris

Polly Pocket still exists, but in an entirely different form. The original Polly Pocket compact is the true nostalgic win. It was like a girl version of Mighty Max. Or was Mighty Max a boy version of Polly Pocket? Whoa, I’m going through an existential crisis now.

At least Mighty Max had a TV show — view the intro video after the jump.

  1. Lisa says:

Yes! Now THIS is Polly Pocket!

  2. moi says:

ahhhaha! holy cow, i used to watch mighty max before i had to go to school in the mornings. first i ate some cereal, and then it was mighty max time while mom did my hair in some type of pony tail or braid. only quote i remember “i am not a chicken. i am a fowl” also oddly enough i had a metric ton of polly pocket compacts…i feel like looking for those now…

  3. pamcake says:

the polly pockets now are creepy, i remember when i had them and i’d always lose the little things.

  4. CNB says:

Totally agree with this win!i think it should be an epic win.i got my first polly from my gramma and was completely hooked after that!i still have all of mine, and dont intend to get ride of them and i never lost any of the stuff!yay!

  5. TheStarcow says:

It’s about time the original Polly got an epic win! I still have all of mine in a box somewhere…absolutely love them. Had a really big one that was a castle that lit up and everything, and the princess had a white horse with a detachable carriage! Made of win, I tell ya.

    • Becka says:

OMG I had that castle too! It was all glittery. I recognize the one in the picture, I had about 100 of these things. Remember the mini ones?

      • DocFan says:

I LOVED the castle! It even had the secret room behind the suit of armour, and it had lampposts that LIT UP. …I have to look at that next time I’m home…

    • Luna says:

OMG, I’ve got that one too! I just packed it away this past summer when cleaning my room. I think it may have been the first one I ever got. I remember creating the most elaborate make-believe games with it and its inhabitants.

I also had one that was a water park–it had a water slide, several people, and a little lazy river that you could fill with water.

I think my sister had one that was a winter wonderland, but she was never as into them as i was…..

  6. Cait says:

Omg I totally loved those! My friends & I had a bunch of the compacts, some Mighty Max toys, & we got one of the “newer” Pollies when they came out thinking they wouldn’t last… I mean they’ve made them the size of Kelly dolls so why keep the Pocket name even? O_O

  7. dese.not.corms says:

T^T i so had that exact set !!!

  8. Indian says:

This was an awesome toy. They only problem was you could not take polly’s plastic dress off.

  9. Anonymous says:

Omfg I loved Polly! I’m 21 and my mom just got me a few old school ones for Christmas. Best present ever.

  10. DT0913 says:

    Wow I remember these things!

  11. Eliza says:

Awww, yes! I had this exact one!

  12. K says:

Most epic win ever. All the Barbies and other toys can go, but the Legos and Polly Pockets stay. Remember the ones with the little animals? And the tiny necklace ones? yay.

    • catgirl says:

Yes, Polly Pocket and Legos are the best toys! I used to use them together, because the Polly dolls worked better than the Lego people. Also, I only had 2 or 3 Lego people. I once built an entire Lego town for all the Polly people, complete with 12 houses, an orphanage for some reason, a school, and several stores. I still own all my Polly Pockets and Legos too.

  13. Rebecca says:

I had that exact Polly Pocket…that and the little necklace ones. They were so great. I wish I could find my old ones.

  14. lolMiel says:

Awww, REAL Polly Pockets. I loved these.

I loved the necklace ones, and there was also a series of storybook ones. I got the mermaid book. It was all sparkly and light-up-y…Awesome.

    • Mieu says:

I got the castle one, wow, these things were so great, I had so many of them and had them in a cloth bag. I wish I knew where it was, they were so epic.

  15. rmayt says:

holey crap! i just found a few of these packed away in the basement the other day actually.. i had a couple bigger ones in the shape of stars and hearts and then i had a few of the polly pocket lockets too. some of mine still had the pollies in them, which was amazing considering how frequently id lose em! EPIC nostalgia win :D

  16. Kandy says:

Awww I used to have these when I was little. Fond memories. ^.^ Does anyone remember the Pokemon ones that came out later? (Similar design, don’t think it was the same manufacturer)

  17. parkoda says:

this is definitely an epic win. i had the one thats in the picture!

  18. Fluffy says:

YES! When the whole thing fit in your pocket instead of just the doll! This is REAL Polly Pocket….. I have a box full of these somewhere….

  19. Anonymous says:

    off subject…
    does anyone remember these shows…

    eureka’s castle

    (i think it’s called) gnomes

i don’t know the show name but the song on it went “skinimirinkydinkydink skinimirinkydo i love you”

    jem

i can’t remember the other ones i meant to put down now :/

    • deitarion says:

I missed most of those (countryside broadcast TV) but the song you’re thinking of was used at the end of Sharon, Lois, and Bram’s Elephant Show.

    • little_star says:

I so remember eureka’s castle!!! Magellan’s tail used to crack me up. and I remember Jem too… made a reference about Jem and Barbie and the rockers the other day to my hairdresser and quickly realized how old I’m getting when she stared at me… :-/

    • Megan says:

Yes! I loved both Eureeka’s Castle and Gnomes. I totally had forgotten about that song, but I absolutely know what you’re talking about. Remember how the Gnomes slept in cupboards at night? I thought that was the coolest thing!

      • Anonymous says:

did they live in cupboards? i don’t remember. i always thought them rubbing their noses together as a kiss was cute. i started doing that.

        • Multi-Facets says:

“The World of David the Gnome.” I loved that cartoon too.

          • Casa says:

Yah, I was about to say that… David the Gnome. ^^

          • Klimatax says:

FYI David the Gnome was by a Dutch artist called Rien Poortvliet. A truly gifted artist.
In Holland David is called: David de kabouter, which is the same, but if you want to search for him on the internet, it’s easier to use the Dutch name.

    • moi says:

yes, and yes the show if i recall is called skinimirinkydinkdo…or something like that…ahhh i loved those shows!

  20. Lunerrrrs says:

I had the wedding chapel one ^_^

  21. It’s hard to believe that’s what Polly Pocket looked like, considering the fact that she looks more like a Barbie now.

I played with the newer Polly Pockets when I was little, and always lost the shoes and clothes.

  22. Sunshiner says:

Squee! I loved Polly Pocket. I had all kinds of the compacts. Apparently now she’s like really big? I haven’t seen it lately, but when I played with her she was a tiny choking hazard. But that was the point of being “pocket-sized”.
I think I had one similar to the one pictured, but it didn’t have such a scenic little pond and bridge. I also had a rectangle one that was supposed to be like a city street and apartment building. (:

    • yasoup says:

My professor got her kid a newer Polly a few years ago and the kid choked on a little magnet piece that came off. She was a business professor but also a lawyer and biotched about legal issues and how terrible it was, Now I played with toys for years and there was an occasional issue. Toys have problems sometimes and break. Not like lead or heating up, that’s different. If your kid’s too small to handle the little problems, don’t get em! Don’t let her eat magnets.

  23. theyrejustwords says:

Epic win is epic! I loved Polly Pockets when I was little. And my brother had Mighty Max’s, so I would always steal his little figures and make them marry Polly under the stars in my fantasy castle. He hated when I did that. :D

The huge little fashion dolls that have Polly’s name these days are just a crime.

  24. qrab says:

I loved Polly Pocket! It made me so depressed when I started seeing ads for a Polly who was no longer pocket sized. If she can’t fit in your pocket, it’s not the real thing!!

  25. Anna says:

Oh my gosh! I still have a bunch of Polly Pockets – the real kind. Now I have to go get them out and be 8 years old again

  26. EarthBoundDancer525 says:

OMG I had this exact one!!! It was my first polly pocket!

  27. vanessa says:

omg this made me so happy! i looooooooooved polly pockets! i used to set them up on my floor tiles and make a polly pocket neighborhood and have a whole little polly pocket soap opera going on :-)

  28. Cait says:

I remember these! I never had them as a kid, but whenever I went to see one of my cousins, we would play with them together. It’s hard to believe how much “Polly Pocket” has changed =/

  29. Megan says:

They’d never be able to sell those things now. No wonder they “gigantified” Polly; she used to be a complete choking hazard!

  30. MarillTachiquin says:

A classmate has about 15 of these Polly Pockets, and she told me that they worth at least 500 dollars each!

She’s saving them just in case she needs the money.

  31. whytefairy says:

The picture is of the first Polly set I ever owned! Of course, I lost the boy ‘doll’ in about 10 minutes…

  32. Bethany says:

Oh man, I remember this. I used to carry that thing around with me everywhere. I thought it was the greatest thing ever! Oh how I miss the good old days!

  33. N/A says:

I was talking to someone about these the other day and she swore blind that I was crazy and that Polly Pocket has always been as big as she is now. Apparently she’s called Polly Pocket because the dolls fit in your pocket. What nonsense.

  34. Kristen says:

I remember being excited to see Polly Pocket was still around and then confused/disappointed when I realized that she couldn’t fit in your pocket anymore (well I guess Polly herself, but nothing else). I used to have a pink Polly Pocket compact… I forget what was inside. I think there was a dog? I wish I could remember.

    • Casa says:

Yah, I think the set I had had like, a dog or a cat… one Polly with the lil currles, and another with pigtails.

We’d stand them in the little peg holes and then smal the compact shut. ^^

    • Sweetangela20 says:

I wonder if it was the one I started with. It was square? had a dog and it was a little house inside? It had a bed and a chair I think…

  35. Beth says:

I had a Polly Pocket – but it was like a phone (you opened up the phone and could play with their houses) – it was my favourite.

I wonder if we still have it… :D

  36. Britt says:

Yes back when Polly really was pocket sized! I remember I had a world where she could “walk” but it was just her attached to a magnet, and I remember I found out I could make her fly across the room if I made her run into this one spot…ah good times…:)

  37. Bullseye says:

Oh my god I miss toys with choking hazards.

  38. bluesilver says:

    LOL
I had that exact one. xD
    I miss those things.

  39. lost90'skid says:

i still got all of mine!! their so rad…
    does anyone remember StarCastles?

  40. Courtney says:

Yeah, I had something like that except it was a pokemon compact playset thing that you could hook up together and there was fun things you can do with the little plastic pokemon, but I eventually lost the pieces.

  41. Sweetangela20 says:

I had the castle!!! haha I love all my old ORIGINAL Polly stuff! That new stuff is just not the same.. I understand the changed the size so they didn’t have little kids swallowing pieces but c’mon! That is why there is an age range on the package for stuff like that!

I have one that was a school/classroom set. and If I remember right, each of the 4 desks from it was actually a stamper :D I LOVED that set. I have one somewhere that had a cupcake top.. and it still smells like cherries :)

  42. Aeyvi says:

OMG I HAD THAT EXACT ONE!!!! it was still my favorite, even after i got the polly pocket town with working electric lights.
and, funny enough, my brother’s mighty max sets were more entertaining. especially with the beach set pollies and the bridal gown polly. the tiny giant monsters found them delicious.

  43. Meg-Meg says:

I remember having the whole fairground set with the little teacups (which I think I still have somewhere) I did get one of the newer Polly’s grew out of it after about a year or so. It now resides at my brother’s childminder’s house.

  44. sarah says:

    thats whats up!!!

  45. VZG says:

I think I had that exact Polly Pocket, even! My favorite was the one with the dogs, though. I tried to keep such good care of them… except my first one, which was a super-old Polly in a necklace. She didn’t have any arms. I don’t know exactly how I broke them off, though.

  46. Paradoxandplaid says:

I loved my polly pockets! but I always broke them in half at the jointed part. I’m so clumsy…

  47. kirby says:

I had at least 15 different houses, and, gosh, over 45 pollies, pets, buddies etc. I have no idea where they went, though, and could use some cash :) bummer!

  48. ohheyy_monet says:

LOVED these when I was little. Only trouble was that I had a hard time keeping track of the little pieces. They day I lost my little seal for the underwater mermaid one was a sad day indeed…

  49. Anonymous says:

I have that same exact set… *sigh*
    I wonder where it is.

  50. GinnyLyn says:

Mighty Max had three of the best voice actors ever–Rob Paulsen, Tim Curry, and Tony Jay.

I was distraught to learn that Tony Jay passed away a few years ago. :(

  51. Kristen says:

    :D I still have mine!

  52. starlyric says:

Norman: I eat spiders for breakfast.

I used to get up at 5:30 just so I wouldn’t miss these episodes.

  53. Emma says:

OMG i had this exact same one!! It brings back so many memories…

  54. Kat says:

YES!!!! i totally had the one in the picture, the castle one with the light up lamp posts, AND the one that had an amusement park of sorts.

polly pocket is so EPIC it’s insane.

  55. samanthaaa! says:

    THE ORIGINAL POLLY POCKET. (:

    yes.

  56. Scarlett says:

I still have my old polly pockets!! I even have the hotel, the horse carrage, the fast food restaurant, the house, horse stable, and the ballerina stage. I still have the old pieces too!

  57. ama says:

I had a TON of these. New polly sets were all I ever wanted for christmas and birthdays. My best friend and I would combine our collections and act out elaborate dramas with them. One day, my mom sold all of them at a garage sale. Thought I was getting too old for them. I was heartbroken.

  58. ciara says:

I have lots of polly pokets (the new 1s) i never choke on them.and im a 9 year old
