Epic Win: Spokey Dokeys

Submitted by Catherine V
Those little plastic things that clipped onto bicycle spokes and made noise – pointless but very cool.
Pointless? But they were colorful and made noise… oh, yeah, that’s a pretty good point, Catherine V.
If you like Spokey Dokeys, you’ll like this:

These were great for about ten minutes until the noise drove you crazy! I preferred baseball cards. A little nicer on the ears! Still great though
I loved Loved LOVED spokey dokeys!!!! I loved the gentle tinkling noise they made as you slowly pedaled through the neighborhood.
If I could find these today, I would TOTALLY put them on my bike!!!
I actually found some (well “fake” ones) at the bargain/$1 section at target a few months ago. It was a pack of 10 or so for $1. I was so excited when I saw them. I went down to my roomates and exclaimed I had found “spokey dokes” and none of them knew what I was talking about (at least not by name) I bought some for my nieces, no idea if my mom ever let them have them…
I would totally put these on my car.
Oh man, that would be so sweet. That would totally beat those turning 22inch rims they always put on cars on Pimp My Ride. Imagine that noise coming down the street? As Parker Lewis would say: coolness.
I’m turning 30 years old in about a week and a half, and my husband is making fun of me because I just found out you can still get these from Amazon.com (Pyramid Bicycle Spoke Beads) and I’m dying to put some on my bike. But I suppose “safety equipment” like “lights” and “reflective strips” and “noise-making devices such as a gong, horn, or bell” are more important right now.
Glow in the dark Spokey Dokeys should be standard equipment! I live in rural America and I can’t see the kids on their bikes in the late summer nights. I almost hit five different kids this summer already!
Female driver.
Please let the posters enjoy the win regardless of face, orientation, gender, or driving ability.
Thank you and have a plasmic day.
I am 24 years old and I remember riding through the neighborhood with these on my bike. I must have gone through dozens of packs of them because they would eventually break and fall off (I was a bit rough with my bike). If they had made the light up ones from the youtube video when I was a kid you can bet your arse I would have owned some.
hell yeah! I had like a dozen packs cause I rode my bike until they fell off!! had them on my bike down at my grandma’s in florida, and on them up here in jersey. I squeed like a school girl when I saw them on here!!! OMG! these were awesome! tho, it made it pretty hard to sneek up on anyone…they knew I was comin’ from a mile away!
Wow. Didn’t you already have Spokey Dokes on the site as a win?
I’m sure they did. I seem to remember commenting on it.
Yep, page 61. Hey, what can I say, I’m bored at work right now, have to catch up on all the epic wins
This isn’t a win. Putting baseball cards in your spokes is a win… unless you recall putting four 1973 Nolan Ryan baseball cards in your bike spokes like I did. “No flags”. Quite.
I wonder how many car crashes have been caused by those Hokey Spokes?
Awwww! i wanted these things sooooo bad. My friends got to have them, but my dad said no because I “didn’t need them”. That was totally not the point. I wanted them because they would make me happy to hear them.
Awww, I know exactly what you mean. My dad was like that too, about EVERYTHING COOL.
I must’ve missed that trend. But I DO remember those glowy bike flags the PTA used to sell that said “WATCH THAT CHILD”
But what I really gotta ask whoever posted the video…. IS that the music from Buckaroo Banzai?
I remember having to haul some serious tail to keep these noisy farkers locked to the outer rim. Took them off after a week. Didn’t slow back down, though. I was hell on two wheels, now I drive like a grandpa.
My very first bike had those. They were awesome.
Hahahahaha, my sister and I just said a few days ago about how we hadnt seen them in ages.
Back in MY day, we didn’t have these. We had to make do with playing cards and clothespins. And we were glad to have those.
You young whippersnappers and your flashy Spokeys…. grumble mumble mumbl…..zzzzzzzzzzzzz
I think their main purpose was to reflect the light, so they weren’t completely useless
Aw man, i can still hear the noise in my head!
I never had those, but I remember them. I used to run over aluminum soda cans just right so they would collapse in the middle and loosely hold on to the the tire. “BrrrrrrrrRRRRrrrrRRRRrrrrr”
