Epic Win: Les Paul

Submitted and Written by Laura C

Who and what could be more of an Epic Win than Les Paul and the guitar named after him? Many, so many of our personal musical Epic Wins would not exist today were it not for Les Paul and his creations; after all, he didn’t just invent the electric guitar, he also invented multi-track recording, which musicians have relied on heavily for decades. The man was so dedicated to his craft that when he suffered a badly-broken right arm as a young man, he instructed the doctors to set it so it would heal permanently cocked, ready to strum. Truly, one of the most epic of wins.

  1. Firebert says:

Thanks for this one. Most people don’t realize how much Les Paul changed music and the way music is made.

  2. BioRocks says:

I love the contrast of having Les Paul right next to Vanilla Ice!

  3. Chan says:

    Definitely a musical genius.

  4. Sunshiner says:

I really just want to know who the 6 people are who voted this down. Those who have never heard of Les Paul? Ridiculous. Completely absurd. Most epic of epic wins. RIP, Les Paul.

  5. Multi-Facets says:

    Magic. Sheer magic.

  6. Alice - I believe in Vaati. says:

    OBEY VAATI!

  7. Jon says:

Hell, when he was a teenager he invented the harmonica holder that allowed him to play guitar and harmonica at the same time. Where would Bob Dylan, John Lennon, etc. be without that?

  8. Anonymous says:

He also pioneered multitrack recording, which basically every artist uses now. (Plus it gave us some really trippy effects like “Bohemian Rhapsody”.

After a bad car accident in the 60s, the doctors told him that his arm would be stuck in one position for the rest of his fife. He told them to set it so he could still play guitar with it. If that’s not dedicated I don’t know what is.

  9. vi31 says:

THanks for this submission! I am proud to have taught in his hometown for three years, and I’m also happy this is where he was buried on Friday. EPIC indeed.

  10. Les Paul is THE most epic of Epic Wins. Where would the music industry be without him?

  11. Maerlyn99 says:

You know the people giving the thumbs down are just trolls trying to piss people off. No one else could be stupid enough to give someone so talented who gave so much music to the world a thumbs down. RIP, Les.

  12. Osiris32 says:

Right on, sis, you made a good choice.

  13. blah says:

Who’s the guitarist at the beginning introducing Les Paul Jeff Beck?

  14. Neelz says:

man, you really gotta have balls to play on a strat right in front of Les Paul

  15. clavier says:

A legend, a great performer, he left us many great songs, and the electric guitar.. Rip Les, hope to hear you again someday along lifes superhighway…
