Epic Win: Popeye the Sailor

Submitted by Alain C

Popeye is the world’s most iconic sailor and the star of one of the most classic cartoons ever. But what you didn’t know is that Popeye the Sailor was ACTUALLY PROPAGANDA FUNDED BY THE POWERFUL SPINACH INDUSTRY!

Just kidding. That was Captain Planet. But there’s something admirable about the “eat your veggies” moral of Popeye.

Incorrect source or offensive?

» 25 Blasts From The Past

  1. Tentie says:

Hehe, Popeye will definetely be my fav next to the old Mickey Mouse.

  2. Obi-Watt Kenobi says:

Did you know that Popeye was the first superhero?

  3. Novawolf says:

The moral was that “Eating spinach would let you beat the hell out of any bullies you may come across.”

I actually don’t know whether or not this worked; in making kids eat broccoli, or getting many kids beat up.

I’ve always liked spinach anyway :P

FUN FACT: “Early references to spinach in the Fleischer cartoons and subsequently in further stories of Popeye are attributed to the publication in 1870 of a study by Dr. E von Wolf which, because of a misprint, attributed to spinach ten times its actual iron content.”

  4. IxChel says:

Heh. If Popeye had been invented today, it would have been cancelled because Olive Oyl give girls “poor body image” XD

  5. rickybobby says:

The Popeye universe must be pretty hard-up for dames, considering men are fighting over the likes of Olive Oyl.

I respect everyone’s opinion, but I always hated Popeye. That awful movie with Robin Williams didn’t help, either.

  6. EGV says:

I really thought he was created for the spinach propaganda! :S

  7. EGV says:

    …..and give you unproportional biceps.

  8. Roflcopters! says:

    1) Popeye is a cartoon representation of Chuck Norris.

2)Spinach is approximately equal to steroids.

    3) Rejoice, because Indian hasn’t shown up yet to douche up this thread.

  9. Maz says:

The old cartoons are 100x better than what is out nowadays. I miss this stuff

  10. Kirael says:

oh, I hate him!!! my mom said I had to eat mu spinach if I wanna be strong like Popeye… ¬¬ SUPID POPEYE AND HIS STUPID EEK SPINACH!!!!!

  11. Casa says:

I alwayes got a kick out of the shows with his nephews… Peepeye, Pipeye, Poopeye and Puppy. Felt sorry for poor poopeye.

  12. D says:

Knitting with the chain is the best!

  13. foobarbaz says:

I liked how in the old versions Popeye and Bluto/Brutus would mumble at each other while having those traveling fistfights.

  14. brian says:

I remember watching that Iconic “Paramount Picture” pyramid and wondering if Popeye was going to play. Popeye is the best!

  15. aaron m says:

i still enjoy my spinach! yes i do love it, and my kids love it also!

  16. Rin says:

When I first got my DVD player, I had, like two or three Popeye DVDs. And basically this cartoon was made tell kids that if they eat their spinach they’ll get huge biceps, as well as the ability to beat the crap out of people. :D

  17. Razor says:

My favorite episode, “She-Sick Sailors” has been banned from TV because it features Popeye and Bluto shooting at each other rather point-blank…Olive is in love with Superman and throws both Popeye and Bluto over for her fangirl crush. Bluto dresses up like Superman and slips a manhole cover in his costume and of course when Popeye shoots him the bullets ping right off. Not wanting to be outdone, Popeye tries to bravely face the machine gun wielded by a gleeful Bluto–when he exclaims in pain and collapses, Olive rushes to his side and says it’s all her fault…and Bluto reveals his true identity. Turns out Popeye was just shot in the spinach, so he chows down and saves Olive from being pawed by the big brute.

I watched that dozens of times and I didn’t ever turn into a gun-wielding maniac!

  18. Tsuki says:

Popeye actually was propaganda for sailors in the navy to eat their spinach. The gross canned stuff that Popeye eats was a part of their meals, but because it was nasty they never ate it and a lost a lot of nutrients. So Popeye was made, not for kids, but to get Sailors to eat their spinach. Apparently it worked!

  19. Alistaro says:

I used to have a cartoon mix tape with a bunch of popeye and annie on it.
