Epic Win: Meco’s “Star Wars Theme/Cantina Band”

Submitted by M Sanchez
Disco + Star Wars = Epic Win
Meco was famous for orchestrating dance floor-friendly versions of movie themes in the ’70s. His “Star Wars Theme/Cantina Band” medley was among his best — both the single and the album went platinum in ‘77. Hear it on YouTube:

I had this album. I used to play it all the time. The A side was much better than the B side, if I remember correctly. Unfortunately, I left it out under a window on typical 100-degree California day and it warped.
It’s not an “album,” brainiac.
Vinyl LP’s were also called albums.
Brainiac.
Vinyl LP’s are only good from throwing at zombies. Please watch Shaun of the Dead and learn something.
Brainiac.
You’re only good “from” being a trolling idiot.
Was it a 45 then? (B1tches.)
i believe the disco version was used in a star wars game for a pre-menu scene.
Yes, it was: Star Wars: Rogue Squadron III. I was waiting for someone to bring that up. I really wonder why it was used. lol
I bought this from a thrift store for a song.
I wasn’t born until 1982 and I just LOVE this song! It’s just so catchy (and Star Wars-y!) that I can’t get enough of it! It’s on my MP3 player for those times when I need a little groovy geeky sound. I’ve always had a soft spot for disco (thanks, Mom!).
I’m sorry miss, but this is for your own good.
/stake through heart
The third time I was born was in 1982.

…I’m sorry, but reincarnation is not actually real. Besides, you’re probably an atheist anyway.
My dad STILL has this album!
I’ve still got this one stashed away with the old record collection!
I still have the original album that I bought in 1977. I still play it occasionaly, when I feel like cranking up the old Victrola.
It’s not an “album.”
Actually, LP’s were called albums…

So yes, it is an album. Even if it doesn’t have much on it.
Actually, that’s a single–it’s smaller than an album, (about the size of a salad plate vs. the album’s dinner plate size) and has room for only one song on each side.
The size of the center hole is the give-away: singles’ are large enough to fit a fistful of spaghetti through them, but albums’ and 78s’ (which are REALLY old format phonograph recordings) holes are about a centimeter across.
All three sizes were just generally called ‘records’, unless a differentiation needed to be made.
what is that man doing to that woman…
Born in 74 here, but grew up with 70s disco and 80s music… I loved Disco, but I can easily say that this disco is a cheap knock-off. Laser sounds added to a jazzed-up Star Wars theme music does not equal disco. Try Abba or Bee Gees, not this crap. FAIL.
They’re doing the bump! (Yes it was a legitimate dance move!)
Be careful you dont break your hip old timer
…and still is…. just not in Airport (Spaceport) bathroom stalls…. :O
Not bad, not bad at all.
NOOOO!!! BADBADBAD!!!
Take John Williams name off that crap!
What about when Kiss saved Christmas?
“What was that? (Play that same song!) Okay, same song, 1,2,3,4,…”
I had these albums! Yes..on vinyl!
did anyone notice one of the co-producers is Tony Bongiovi?
Nooooo! Not Tony Bongiovi !!!

Who’s that?
Love it! I have the Meco Star Wars CD, and need to get some of the others. Almost as good is Pat Boone’s “In a Metal Mood” CD.
Awesome.
But my all time favorite cheesey Star Wars theme is this:

If you like this, also check out “Meco’s Theme / 3 W. 57th.” So 1970s that it belongs on the CHiPs soundtrack, but also an excellent representation of Meco’s style, and just a pretty good tune IMHO anyway.
And if you don’t like this… Yah, so?

So, so strange. I literally have my copy of this 45 sitting on my desk as I type. I am cleaning out a closet, and all of my vinyl albums and 45’s from age 13 (my age in 1977) are just terrible (with the exception of one Queen record). What was I thinking? Meco. Good grief.
Just when you thought that disco was finally dead… :-p
Look up Voltaire’s song Cantina. It’s hilarious (and dirty, not work safe).
My girlfriend saw Meco perform this in 1977 at Disneyworld. I have the full size album (yes it is an album) from that same year. Great Nostalgic Win!
This sh*t is funkalicious! I just wanna get down, and do whatever inappropriate dance those robots are doing!
Ah! Now I know where the disco version came from for Quentin Tarantino’s Star Wars!
Whoaly CRAP! This is AWESOME! WHY have I not come across this before? *socks are blown away*
See, this is the point of this site. Introducing the old awesome to new generations (like me). I love it!
I still have mine, im so happy i kept these things.
