Epic Win: Curly Shoelaces

curly-shoelaces

Submitted by Mary Beth D

Another great example of nostalgic fashion: ridiculous looking, and not exactly practical. Can someone help me identify what era they’re from?

You can still find curly shoelaces online. You could also make them yourself, if you’re too cheap to pay, like, $2…

  1. Spoon says:

Of course they were practical! They meant you never had to tie or untie your sneakers!

  2. Megger says:

When I remember them was the late 80’s and early 90’s! High fashion! Lol

  3. dare says:

i wore those in the elementary school which was the late nineties! i had sooo many pairs and my friends and i always compared whose were cooler. my favorite were my black ones with silver specks and i had them in my big platform sneakers hahah :D

  4. Aphrodine says:

These were the most awesome things, EVER. Because, you know, actually tying your shoes was for nerds. I had a pair that were hot pink and black, and another that were neon green and yellow.

I remember wearing them in ‘98 if that helps, but then again I was always behind the trends so they may have came out sooner.

  5. halfbacled says:

    i wont those back :D

  6. ThatOneGirl says:

I wore them in the mid/late-90s as well. I seem to remember a neon pink/yellow pair, although it could have just been pink. Either way, I was crazy OCD as a child and never liked the curls to get messed up or intertwined, so my time with them did not last long due to stress and annoyance.
    Boy, was I a strange kid. o____o;

  7. Casa says:

Yah, late 80’s early 90’s… I never had any because my parents said they were silly looking. >< But I WANTE some!!!!

  8. Aria says:

They were definitely around in the early nineties when I was in elementary school. I had pink and, I think, neon orange and neon yellow. They were one of the “fashion essentials” for the 3rd grade set in ‘93 at my school.

  9. catie says:

i had these when i was in elementary school which was 1999-2005. although we had them from kindergarden to second grade. the pe teachers used them as rewards.

  10. Stick says:

I never liked these, mostly because of the colors, but I loved velcro shoes. (ANd yes, I could tie regualr shoesas well.)

  11. Al says:

I remember them from throughout elementary school, which for me was from 92-98.

  12. Cia says:

I had some curly shoelaces around 2002 xD

  13. tigergal says:

They actually still still sell these at the medical supplies stores.

People with disabilities like these because they can put on and take off their own shoes without assistance.

  14. PeachyKat says:

I wanted these so badly, but we were a very prudent family. Also, I had a hard time tying my shoes and I had a lot of ‘tying lessons’. I felt stupid because all my other siblings learned to tie THEIR shoes. But these laces looked cool and springy and had different colors.

  15. Anonymous says:

I had some in the early ’90s. But I thought they were for kids before they learned to tie a normal shoelace.

  16. Skye says:

My forty-something year old dad has a pair of sneakers with shoelaces like these. He calls them “stroky laces”.XD Silly Dad.

  17. krissy87 says:

I’d have to say early- to mid-90s…I remember kids in my class having them in Primary school, but not after grade 4…so prior to ‘96.

  18. Meg-Meg says:

These look awesome! *sigh* if only I’d been born 5 years earlier, I probably would have had some! Oh well, I guess I’ll have to put upp with regular laces…

    • Captain Ari says:

hey, there are some pretty cool regular laces out there, too!
I seem to remember having some sparkly curly laces. XD I might’ve had green ones, too, but I’m not sure. I try to forget that part of my life. Catholic school and such. *shudder*

    • Mike Hawke says:

Try Craigslist, they always give awy free stuff there

  19. Emillie says:

I remember these from early elementary so like ‘92 -’95 after that they kinda petered out. Plus I never had a pair, it was so sad :(

  20. Xweetara says:

I used curly shoelaces up until 4th grade, because I didn’t know how to / like to tie my own shoelaces. XD I always liked to pull on them and stretch them until they broke and didn’t curl properly anymore.

  21. Vic says:

I never wore them, mainly because when they came out my mother immediately bought some for herself because she thought they were cool and trendy. Seeing her in those laces and her fanny pack, ugh.

  22. MUBNUT says:

I used to wear these in my plain white Keds to jazz them up a bit. It was a true fashion statement.

  23. Bandit says:

They were definitely around when I was in kindergarten, which was 86-87. I always remember my parents telling me about how much I whined about having to learn to tie my own shoes when I could’ve just used those shoe strings instead.

  24. Nostawyn says:

I still have some. They’re awesome if you can’t tie shoelaces, which, sadly, I can’t. I can make a bow, but they never stay. Ever. But thanks to my pink & white curly laces, it’s not a problem. :)

    I sound like a commercial. . .

  25. karixma says:

I wore these laces in 2004, after I was partially paralysed by a stroke. (I lost my entire left side, had to re-learn how to walk, talk, eat, & everything!)
Yes, I think these laces are cool, but I’m just thankful someone thought of them!

  26. Courtney says:

gotta love them! All you needed to do was pull them tight and go! It was so easy!

  27. Miranda says:

I had totally forgotten about those! Mid 90’s was when I wore them. So much win right there.

  28. Deusabscondidum says:

Ooh ooh! I had these! For some reason I couldn’t figure out how to tie my shoes until I was in the 4th grade, so these were a lifesaver. I had them in the late 80s.

  29. Dustie says:

I actually know of a practical use for these. Mom likes them (she’ss 87 yrs old) because she hates velcro and can’t really tie anymore ‘cuz it hurts her hands. So forget the kids and give them to all your elderly relatives!

  30. Tboz says:

Definately from the ’80’s~I agree with others that say late ’80’s. Thank God I was already out of school by the time these came around!

  31. Indian says:

    [random generic insult]

    I’m so lonesome…

  32. toribug11 says:

i had these when i was about 4 or 5, which was in ‘95 im pretty sure. my mom bought me a pair of neon pink ones, and they were too long for my shoes, so about ever ten steps i would trip and fall on my face. i never cried or whined though. i think i had them for about a week before my mom got sick of seeing me fall.

  33. Public School sucks. says:

these are also good for those with arthritis in the fingers and hands.

  34. knightsintodreams says:

hahahahahaha yes yes i had these once. bright 90’s green ones with the speckles. :P my mom let me wear these once, and that was at an amusement park. the very first ride we went on was the “Ring of Fire,” which is a circle coaster type ride that flings you around and around. By the time we were upside down my pink shoe flew off!!! it jammed itself in the coaster tracks and the ride had to be shut down, luckily they were able to get us off immediately, but it took an hour or two before it was re-opened. and they gave my shoe back all mangled T^T
    i loved my fuschia-sneakers…
my mom always had the for-sight to remind me to pull my hair back lest it get caught in the rides and rip my head off, but she didn’t think about goofy-swirly-shoe-laces that won’t even hold your shoe on…. oh well~

  35. Jenna says:

I had those. Pink sparkley ones xD

  36. nome66 says:

    my sisters had these.
i thought they were pretty cool.

  37. Monsters says:

I had one but long time ago. it was late 80’s early 90’s that those shoe are really smash the market.

  38. ladegerate says:

WOW! it looks really nice and I always love to try new and trendy style and I will definately try to make it for myself…….

  39. Adam says:

I honestly could never lace them on my kids’ shoes.

  40. kidyekatt says:

i absolutely hated them, the were either too tight or too lose. i remember seeing them in the store and remember all of my friends had them so of course i HAD TO HAVE THOSE LACES bad choice

  41. Ariel says:

they sell these at Rack Room Shoes I used to work there just in case someone is looking for them.

  42. Cindy says:

My mom still wears these for bicycling, because they aren’t long enough to get caught in the chain. Fashion aside, these still have lots of practical uses.

  43. Anonymous says:

I’m a 90s kid and I recall having a pair of these laces once in grade school at some point… I think they got popular for a bit mid 90s, but don’t quote me on that. All I know is I’d all but forgotten them until now… I hate tying shoes…
