Epic Win: Curly Shoelaces

Submitted by Mary Beth D
Another great example of nostalgic fashion: ridiculous looking, and not exactly practical. Can someone help me identify what era they’re from?
You can still find curly shoelaces online. You could also make them yourself, if you’re too cheap to pay, like, $2…

Of course they were practical! They meant you never had to tie or untie your sneakers!
They are for lazy people that sleep all day at work.
Hey,
I made an eCard for you.
You can pick it up at:

Hope you like it!
When I remember them was the late 80’s and early 90’s! High fashion! Lol
Loser.
dont hate on him, he knows they were ridiculous
I have pix of them in my kids’ shoes in 1988 on.
i wore those in the elementary school which was the late nineties! i had sooo many pairs and my friends and i always compared whose were cooler. my favorite were my black ones with silver specks and i had them in my big platform sneakers hahah
Double Loser.
Dude, stop going around and calling people losers. We all have different opinions! They like the laces, you don’t… GET OVER IT!
no, you’re the loser. sitting here and bashing people for having fun remembering when they were kids.
Funny you have the same icon as Meg Meg…… I wonder.
I had that same kind!!! I never did use them, though.
BTW, shaddap Indian.
These were the most awesome things, EVER. Because, you know, actually tying your shoes was for nerds. I had a pair that were hot pink and black, and another that were neon green and yellow.
I remember wearing them in ‘98 if that helps, but then again I was always behind the trends so they may have came out sooner.
That’s around the same time I wore them. Tying shoes, bah! Losers.
And to this day you still cannot tie your shoes, mommy does it for you.
Stop trolling. It’s dumb and immature.
i wont those back
Wow….. I WANT you to learn how to spell.
Don’t be a douchebag. Just head on back to 4Chan or that bridge you should be guarding and mellow out.
I wore them in the mid/late-90s as well. I seem to remember a neon pink/yellow pair, although it could have just been pink. Either way, I was crazy OCD as a child and never liked the curls to get messed up or intertwined, so my time with them did not last long due to stress and annoyance.
Boy, was I a strange kid. o____o;
I would say you still are.
Yah, late 80’s early 90’s… I never had any because my parents said they were silly looking. >< But I WANTE some!!!!
At first I just WANTED that other loser to learn to spell, but add yourself to the list.
I SWEAR IF I SEE ONE MORE TROLL REPLY FROM YOU I’M GONNA MARCH ACROSS THE OCEAN AND KICK YOU UP THE ARSE!
You’re an effective troll-stopper.
Thanks very much ^_^ I’m used to shouting threats at people. Most of the boys at my school are gits.
So do you have a stuttering problem? Meg Meg…
Hey, Indian, do you have a common courtesy problem, or is there just something lodged up your arse?
Yeah please take your finger out. Thanks.
That’s not Ari’s finger, it’s your own head.
They were definitely around in the early nineties when I was in elementary school. I had pink and, I think, neon orange and neon yellow. They were one of the “fashion essentials” for the 3rd grade set in ‘93 at my school.
Wow you must have been so cool. I know you must have switched to velcro after because you had no idea how to tie your shoes.
wow, YOU are so cool for having no life and replying to EVERY SINGLE comment negatively.
You are so cool for commenting back.
Wanker.
Yeah I’m with dare… Do you have no life?
You are so cool for being a follower.
Hey Indian…YOU ARE THE LOSER since you have nothing better to do with your entire day but pick on people here. GET A LIFE!
It’s awesome how he/she hasn’t replied back after your comment.
Haha! = Win.
Haha! = Fail.
I had to go back to work
Indian = EPIC BLOODY FAIL!
Oh I see. “Bloody” so you must be from England. Comment back after you bush those yellow teeth. Man a dentist could make a fortune in England.
Troll, you mean brush.
Ahhh thank you, my middle finger missed that key.
i had these when i was in elementary school which was 1999-2005. although we had them from kindergarden to second grade. the pe teachers used them as rewards.
I had some and used them in attempt to hang myself after reading your comment.
ha ok that one made me laugh
Too bad you failed. Can’t even properly hang yourself. Now that’s pathetic.
Touché!
Douché!
Wow, you’re so witty! I’m in awe! ¬.¬
I saw them at elementary school around the same time as you
I never liked these, mostly because of the colors, but I loved velcro shoes. (ANd yes, I could tie regualr shoesas well.)
Well I was going to say good job avoiding it but……
Your spelling went downhill. I could see shoesas being a typo but regualr?
You know what, I really don’t care. I have a broken keyboard. Too bad you have some fecked up OCD thing going on.
Oh the broken keyboard excuse, classic. Do you even know what OCD is?
*Is desperately trying to resist getting on a boat to America* You are seriously getting on my bloody nerves!
You assume im in America? LOL.
Americans have more of a life then she does, I think she’s from India.
My feet are very hot today, will you smell them for me?
I remember them from throughout elementary school, which for me was from 92-98.
I had some curly shoelaces around 2002 xD
They actually still still sell these at the medical supplies stores.
People with disabilities like these because they can put on and take off their own shoes without assistance.
I wanted these so badly, but we were a very prudent family. Also, I had a hard time tying my shoes and I had a lot of ‘tying lessons’. I felt stupid because all my other siblings learned to tie THEIR shoes. But these laces looked cool and springy and had different colors.
I had some in the early ’90s. But I thought they were for kids before they learned to tie a normal shoelace.
My forty-something year old dad has a pair of sneakers with shoelaces like these. He calls them “stroky laces”.XD Silly Dad.
I’d have to say early- to mid-90s…I remember kids in my class having them in Primary school, but not after grade 4…so prior to ‘96.
These look awesome! *sigh* if only I’d been born 5 years earlier, I probably would have had some! Oh well, I guess I’ll have to put upp with regular laces…
hey, there are some pretty cool regular laces out there, too!
I seem to remember having some sparkly curly laces. XD I might’ve had green ones, too, but I’m not sure. I try to forget that part of my life. Catholic school and such. *shudder*
Try Craigslist, they always give awy free stuff there
I remember these from early elementary so like ‘92 -’95 after that they kinda petered out. Plus I never had a pair, it was so sad
I used curly shoelaces up until 4th grade, because I didn’t know how to / like to tie my own shoelaces. XD I always liked to pull on them and stretch them until they broke and didn’t curl properly anymore.
I never wore them, mainly because when they came out my mother immediately bought some for herself because she thought they were cool and trendy. Seeing her in those laces and her fanny pack, ugh.
I used to wear these in my plain white Keds to jazz them up a bit. It was a true fashion statement.
They were definitely around when I was in kindergarten, which was 86-87. I always remember my parents telling me about how much I whined about having to learn to tie my own shoes when I could’ve just used those shoe strings instead.
I still have some. They’re awesome if you can’t tie shoelaces, which, sadly, I can’t. I can make a bow, but they never stay. Ever. But thanks to my pink & white curly laces, it’s not a problem.
I sound like a commercial. . .
I wore these laces in 2004, after I was partially paralysed by a stroke. (I lost my entire left side, had to re-learn how to walk, talk, eat, & everything!)
Yes, I think these laces are cool, but I’m just thankful someone thought of them!
gotta love them! All you needed to do was pull them tight and go! It was so easy!
I had totally forgotten about those! Mid 90’s was when I wore them. So much win right there.
Ooh ooh! I had these! For some reason I couldn’t figure out how to tie my shoes until I was in the 4th grade, so these were a lifesaver. I had them in the late 80s.
I actually know of a practical use for these. Mom likes them (she’ss 87 yrs old) because she hates velcro and can’t really tie anymore ‘cuz it hurts her hands. So forget the kids and give them to all your elderly relatives!
Definately from the ’80’s~I agree with others that say late ’80’s. Thank God I was already out of school by the time these came around!
[random generic insult]
I’m so lonesome…
i had these when i was about 4 or 5, which was in ‘95 im pretty sure. my mom bought me a pair of neon pink ones, and they were too long for my shoes, so about ever ten steps i would trip and fall on my face. i never cried or whined though. i think i had them for about a week before my mom got sick of seeing me fall.
these are also good for those with arthritis in the fingers and hands.
hahahahahaha yes yes i had these once. bright 90’s green ones with the speckles.
my mom let me wear these once, and that was at an amusement park. the very first ride we went on was the “Ring of Fire,” which is a circle coaster type ride that flings you around and around. By the time we were upside down my pink shoe flew off!!! it jammed itself in the coaster tracks and the ride had to be shut down, luckily they were able to get us off immediately, but it took an hour or two before it was re-opened. and they gave my shoe back all mangled T^T
i loved my fuschia-sneakers…
my mom always had the for-sight to remind me to pull my hair back lest it get caught in the rides and rip my head off, but she didn’t think about goofy-swirly-shoe-laces that won’t even hold your shoe on…. oh well~

the Ride lol
I had those. Pink sparkley ones xD
my sisters had these.
i thought they were pretty cool.
I had one but long time ago. it was late 80’s early 90’s that those shoe are really smash the market.
WOW! it looks really nice and I always love to try new and trendy style and I will definately try to make it for myself…….
I honestly could never lace them on my kids’ shoes.
i absolutely hated them, the were either too tight or too lose. i remember seeing them in the store and remember all of my friends had them so of course i HAD TO HAVE THOSE LACES bad choice
they sell these at Rack Room Shoes I used to work there just in case someone is looking for them.
My mom still wears these for bicycling, because they aren’t long enough to get caught in the chain. Fashion aside, these still have lots of practical uses.
I’m a 90s kid and I recall having a pair of these laces once in grade school at some point… I think they got popular for a bit mid 90s, but don’t quote me on that. All I know is I’d all but forgotten them until now… I hate tying shoes…
