Epic Win: Alphie

AlphieII

Submitted and Written by Julia H

ALPHIE was an 80s toy that I absolutely loved. It was the early version of all of the ‘Leapster’ type stuff now Math skills, animal noises, a ‘twenty questions’ type game. He really had it all. I still have mine, it still works, and now my daughter plays with it!

Calling it a computer might be a stretch…

I had one of these growing up too. I used to play with it all the time! It was a really great learning tool for toddlers and pre-K kids. I don’t know if mine still works or not. For that matter, I don’t even know if I still have the cards or not.

Totally. This totally deserves an epic win!

  2. LGHunter says:

I used to LOVE that thing! Man, even though I knew all of the answers, I still loved it. Although it playing the songs was annoying.

Maybe that’s why mom got rid of it…

  3. KatDucDuk says:

When I was 4 years old, I had major surgery, and Alphie totally kept me company in the hospital. :0)

  4. anaranjada says:

    “I got it right!”
    loved this thing…

  5. Nightlyeclipse says:

OMG! I loved my Alphie! I think I actually squealed when I saw this on the homepage. I got mine back in 1983 and the ripe old age of 3. lol I wish I still had it so my kids could play with it now.

  6. lufflaff says:

not having had one of these…I don’t get it! It looks like it says 3+4=6. ?!?!

    • Kara says:

No, no, no…the top is the first portion of the problem…then you pick the second portion of the problem from the left column by pressing one of the red buttons. Then you pick the answer to the problem you made by pressing the yellow button by the right answer.

Oh, if you couldn’t tell, I totally rocked the ALPHIE. Loved that thing!

  7. Mizz Kitteh says:

    O M G. Alphie was my first love…

  8. Casa says:

We never got any cool toys like this… but then again we had ponies. 0o

  9. potpiekitty says:

My daughter learned at the tender age of 4, that if you threw Alphie up against the wall hard enough, it would play the “you got it right” music.
And so I’d hear her in her room playing:
    BANG!
    *music*
    BANG!
    *music*
They really must have been well made because it was pretty much indestructible.

  10. Jadsia says:

OMG, I thought I was the only person who had one of these things. I remember it being one of the first robot toys, and it was soon followed by lots of other robot inspired and animatronic toys. I also think it made a huge contribution to my becoming a nerd! 8)

  11. PBunneh says:

Omg I remember being so scared of Alphie as a kid…. I would start crying and screaming “HIS FACE LIGHTS!!!!” My parents had to hide it in the basement. lol

  12. MUBNUT says:

Loved Alphie, but he started making weird demonic noises after a few years of over-use.

  13. Mia says:

OMG, I totally had one of these when I was a kid! I wish I still had mine for my kids (well, someday, anyway). Alphie was way better than those vtech laptops the kids have these days. He was simple, easy to use, and came with cards instead of being loaded down with all sorts of applications.

  14. Tboz says:

I wanted one of these but we were too poor to get one. Hey~I did have a Merlin! Anyone rem that item? It was red & shaped like a cordless phone & is had math games, etc on it. One of the best toys I ever had! Ahhh, the memories…….

  15. devilwoman says:

alphie!!! oh man…i loved this toy :D 0

  16. Connie says:

LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE Alphie!!!!

  17. Valerie says:

I just went “OH MY GOD! Alphie!” Now I have to call my mom to see if she still has mine. I hope the answer is yes.

  18. Canaduck says:

I doubt I’ve seen or even thought of Alphie for twenty years, but the second I looked at this picture I remembered it instantly. The buttons were so soft. I even remember that one white “button” in the lower right corner that you couldn’t push!

  19. Gregora says:

I forgot about having one. I don’t remember when or how I got mine. All I remember was the cards were the first thing I lost and then I just randomly pushed buttons. <_<

  20. ama says:

I actually squealed, “ALPHIE!!” when I saw this. It’s the first toy I ever loved…

  21. Ariel says:

oh my oh my! I loved this toy

  22. MIGHTY says:

I can’t believe how happy you’ve made me today! We were watching some of my wife’s home movies from Christmas in the 80s and someone mentioned an Alphie and immediately I had to head to my dear friend, the internet. That was the first time I thought about him in years! I spent hours upon hours with Alphie. I love computers and I loooove technology. Now I realize that this love affair has been with me since the very beginning. Oh man, I would love to have an Alphie right now. I’d be giddy with each right answer like it was my first time! Thank you, thank you, thank you!

  23. Alletron says:

I know a guy who collects these. He showed me his closet full of them once – it is where Alphies go to die. SO CREEPY.
