Epic Win: Mini Carousels

Submitted by D Buendorf
I remember throwing tantrums if my parents wouldn’t let me ride every single mini carousel that I saw. Totally silly, totally tacky, totally the best way to spend a quarter.

That’s what Perry from Jane’s Addiction needed to ride in “Been Caught Stealing”!
But they didn’t have one, apparently, so he was stuck leaning against a soda machine.
Oh, well.
They still have one in the town I live in and my kids are just as addicted now as I was then.
The local K-Mart still has one
There is SO one of these outside a gas station south of where I live! Of course, it doesn’t work, there’s a bag taped over the coin slot… But it’s there!
Also, I remember there used to be a cool one–4 or five seats instead of the three–in the “Worlds Largest McDonalds” in Oklahoma–the bridge one?? Yeah. Good times.
Ok really? this is blasts from the pasts not stuff that still exists
No, it’s epic win from when we were kids.
These were around when I was a kid, and they were epic win. Just because there are a couple still around today doesn’t mean they aren’t epic wins.
I loved this… until I plummeted those 2 feet and smacked my head on the concrete below
Those things were awesome. I loved the cars too.
They’re 50 cents now where I live when you can find them, but I still ride them. You are NEVER too old for a mini carousel.

I remember the ones at McDonalds!
FWEEEE!!!
When we went on vacation there was this ancient one off to onside of a board walk… I had my very giant brother sit on the little horsie for a picture!
Was tres epic. *nod nod*
I remember calling these by condiment names, ‘ketchup,’ ‘mustard,’ ‘mayo’
My friends and I loved these so much that one night on our way home from a night on the town (we were teenagers at the time) we stopped to take a spin on one. Yep, it was still fun.
In the outlet mall in Alpharetta, GA they have a huge area full of these kinds of rides, along with two carousels. I spent $12 on my granddaughter letting her go on any rides she dang well pleased, till she was tired. I love being a grandma…
A few years ago, some of my friends (all 20-somethings) decided to ride one of these around. They threw their free hands over their heads like they were in a rodeo. They had the Gattitown employees laughing hard enough that no one could reprimand them for being on it.
At least they were smart enough to balance their weight out so the thing didn’t tip over.
The thing I remember best about those is how I’d always want to ride them, until I realized that doing so would put me within a foot of a wall covered in mayflies.
I hate mayflies.
Don’t you know those things will electrocute you? And you will DIE DIE DIE!!!!
At least that’s what Mom always said…
My mom wouldn’t let us ride after she saw something on the local news that claimed that little kids would urinate on mini carousels and that no one would ever clean them.
Loved these. I have a strong memory of the one that was in front of the Middleburg Hts. K-Mart, mid-80’s. My dad put in the quarter and it never shut off. My mom was inside shopping. I grew tired of the ride. But dad insisted on me riding it as long as possible. Opportunities like that were once in a lifetime!
They had those plus a ball pit at all the local Hardee’s here in my town back in the 80’s, early 90’s. I used to LOVE going to Hardee’s when I was little to play in the ball pit and the mini carousel. Now I can’t imagine any kid playing in a ball pit- when I think about it now how gross and unsanitary that would be?! Who knows what kids do in there. eww.
Well, all the Hardee’s in this area went out of business like 10 years ago though.
I broke one of these with some other kids at a cabin resort I was staying at a few years ago. It was free too.
WHY!!! FORGIVE ME!!!
No matter how much I wanted to I never got to ride on these things when they had ‘em at Toys R Us.
Yeeessss! I remember the ferris wheel thing! There was one at Webb Chapel Mall in Dallas. I remember riding on it when I was 4, and thinking it was so unbelivably high, then saw it again at 9 or so, and couldn’t believe how small it was.
I hated the one at the McD’s in Irving until I was about 5. Then I was big enough to be able to stand on one of the figures and reach the button to start the thing.
It only ran for about a minute, but once I could reach that button, I’d spend hours on it. At least it felt that long anyway.
the cool thing is that you can make 3 kids happy for a quarter
What? I just rode one in front of K-mart last month!
Yes! They have one outside a Kmart near me.
I rode one of these outside our local KMart as a wee nipper! My favorite was always the blue horse. I remember the sort of grindy little song it played…someone in my town has one of these in their front yard as a sort of bizarre lawn ornament. 0_o
