Epic Win: Yip Yips

Submitted by Courtney A

The Yip Yips were Sesame Street’s notorious Martian duo — truly underrated characters from the Muppet canon. But the real question is, were they better than Kang and Kodos from The Simpsons? You decide! Here’s a clip (sorry to make you click; Hulu embeds aren’t working).

  1. Stick says:

Definitley better than the Simpsons, I always hated those two guys.

  2. Anon says:

YES! A brother and sister in one of my college classes dressed up as these two for Halloween last year. Best costume EVER!

  3. Someone says:

    yip-yip-yip-yip-yip
    uhhh-huuuhhh uhhhhh-huuuuhhhh
    yip-yip-yip-yip-yip

  4. BAW says:

When I saw “Invasion of the Yip Yips”, I thought it was referring to the Pomeranians the lady down the street keeps.

  5. bdwilcox says:

These things used to completely freak me out as a kid. I would actually have nightmares about them.

  6. D.R. says:

Yip yip yerp yerp! These were the funnest aliens ever. :)

  7. garooob says:

NO! That was the scariest thing ever. EVER! It still scares me.

  8. Squeaky says:

OMG! Best alien invasion EVAR! ^_^ as soon as I saw Yip Yip, I started goin’ ‘yip yip yip yip yip yip yip!’

    Bring back the classic muppets!

  9. Tsuki says:

XD I used to be scared of them when I was very little. XD LAME.

  10. beingwyrd says:

    I LOVE THESE GUYS!

i admit that i sometimes randomly break out in Yip-Yiping…

  11. CowKirby says:

Their mouths used to creep me out as a child. But they’re definitely more lovable than those Simsons aliens.

  12. Megger says:

Wow-I am glad I’m not alone in the fact that these guys totally freaked me out as a kid! Seeing them now I’m not sure what it was about them…they just seemed like they could eat you with those big mouths! All that yip-yiping…so sinister! :)

  13. NP says:

BRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRING! Search out the vids on youtube for these guys. The one with the phone is awesome. Amazing timing. Consulting their “earth book”, they look back and forth and somehow identify the phone as a cow and a chicken. Each time, proven wrong (nope nope nope nope nope). When the phone finally rings, the yip-yips are startled and hide behind their bottom lips. Epic win to the Nth.

  14. Juniper Jupiter says:

    RAY-DEE-YO!!!

    RAY-DEE-YO!!!

UH HUH! UH HUH! Yip yip yip yip!!!!

  15. Baximus says:

    Com.. Pu.. Tor?

  17. bibliotechnique says:

Yip Yips FTW!!! these guys are awesome!!!

  18. Blaze says:

Fantastic memory blast. A-1. I used to love the way they hid behind their own mouths. I also occasionally break out in a “yip-yip-yip” to signify special agreement.

I find it fascinating that some folks were scared of them! Boggles my mind.

  19. utaduta says:

yip yip yip uh huh uh huh! i love these guys! i also liked when they saw a cow and moo’ed.

  20. Platy says:

My older brother and I used to Yip-yip at each other. These guys were more proof of how genius Jim Henson was.

  21. Mom Of Teens says:

hysterical! i loved these guys when they’d come on when my kids were little. I still sing their “Family” song all the time. Now i’m gonna be “yipping” all day and annoying the coworkers. hang on while i sing for them. bwahahah, they think i’ve lost my mind.

  22. hhead says:

me and my older brother still yip yip our agreements and we are in our 30’s!

  23. Outback Jon says:

Funny, a similar thing was just on PlanetFunny. (link) Coincidence?

  24. Meowth says:

I remember those guys! They were awesome! I, too, liked the Family song.

  25. Inua says:

I do this impression every now and then but no one ever understands why or where it is from. I can’t wait to show my fiance when he comes home so he will think I am a little less crazy.

  26. HOW DARE YOU INSULT THE MARTIAN COMMUNITY WITH RIDICULOUS LITTLE PUPPETS???!!!

heehee, no, just kidding. those guys are the funniest thing i’ve seen on onceuponawin for EVER! weirdly enough, i KNOW i watched some sesame street when i was wee, but i don’t remember those yip yips. really, i don’t. sad. maybe i too was frightened of them, so i suppressed the memory. :(

not only am i profoundly amused by their yipping, i LOVE the way their mouths move! i’d like to freeze them somehow when their mouths are wide open and then throw random stuff in!

    (yyyyyyyipyipyipyipyipyipyipyipyipyipyipyipyip….
    yyyyyyyipyipyipyipyipyipyipyipyipyipyipyipyip….)

  27. in_a_box says:

yipyip family :D I love the yip yips!

  28. Amanda says:

    Oh. My. Goodness…

I used to be positively TERRIFIED of these things when I was little!!! Seriously, one of the earliest and most vivid dreams (or nightmares) I can remember is one I had when I was just a tot, and those things were hiding under my bed… Traumatized me for life, lol!

I can’t quite remember why I was so afraid of them… They’re pretty funny, watching them now =)

  29. lolMiel says:

The first time I saw these, I was laughing and yipping for days. Fortunately, my parents felt the same way about them.

  30. Failerella says:

I have no idea what yip yips are but NOTHING is better than Kang and Kodos! We must move forward, not backward, upward not forward, and always twirling, twirling, …

  31. dukethepcdr says:

My second favorite muppets from Sesame Street (after Oscar the Grouch who should have his own TV show he’s so cool). Best alien puppets ever!!!! They should be in one of those Muppet movies.

  32. Emma says:

Oh, the family song! <3 My mom and I were singing that one morning when I was little, and then my little brother shouted "Stop singing!" from another room. Good times.

  33. Toastfan902 says:

I remember they had a song, and then they had a baby yip yip at the end of it…(unless i’m confusing them with any other martians on sesame street). Anyways I always got a kick out of those guys.

  34. cat says:

Those guys had been around a long time before they hit Sesame Street. They were some of Jim’s earliest creations (he referred to it as his “wash cloth period”) back when he was still in high school and appeared in some of his first shows. They even predate Kermit the Frog.

  35. Div says:

Ah, the yip yips. Loved those guys.

  36. Special Ed says:

OMFG! I made my first (and only) website in eighth grade on a computer exactly like the one in the video. It was a 486 identical to the one in the video! Memories! BTW, I don’t quite remember the Yip-Yips but DAMN are they annoying?! There should have been a limit to how many “yips” Jim Henson could give them per episode! It’s funny how you can see the puppeteers’ hands every time in the video! It’s like the old Star Trek when they began every show with “Star Date…” and you could see the Enterprise being moved around on screen with fishing twine. It’s funny!

  37. krissy87 says:

I love the Yip Yips!! IMHO they are soooo much better than Kodos and Kang!

  38. grapejuice says:

at first i thought i had found my long lost tv-muppet-ish puppets, from TCC (the childrens channel) they were also alien-ish muppets. but they were kinda like the hosts of a show that had a woman who was with them, sometimes read book, and they showed cartoons and stuff. could never remember the name of that show. ;\

  39. amy says:

those things use to scare the crap out of me when i was a kid

  40. Rox says:

I just have to say it too!

    yipyipyipyipyipyipyipyipyipyipyipyip ah huh ah huh

    Total winliness ^_^

  41. bugg says:

    these were my favorite!
When i was a kid i wanted my parents to name my baby sister ‘blue space creature’ or ‘pink space creature’ after them

  42. brmbug says:

I loooved these guys! The phone one has to be the most famous, I certainly remember seeing it the most anyway. Later on in High School, there were many yip-yip conversations that went on between random students in the atrium during lunch. There were even a few kids in my homeroom class that’d annoy the teacher with it.

  43. PoopFlakes says:

    It’s about damned time!!

  44. Rob says:

LOL, at the 54 second mark, “ruokakirja ruokakirja”… Finnish for cookbook. Must have been from an episode in Finland.

  45. chizpita806 says:

I always loved the occasional “mmmmmmnope mnope”

  46. Giga says:

    oooo
yiiiiiip yip yip yip yip yip yip yip yip yip yip yip yip
    check book earth sound
    nope nope nope nope

  47. JSims says:

I loved these guys! Even as a kid, I always figured they had spent all their money on the “main” characters and only had enough left over for two terry cloth towels and four ping pong balls. Barrring…..Barrring….aahh….

    • Rox says:

OMG….yes…somewhere in the back of my kiddie brain I think I thought that too. ROFL. Epically funny comment!

  48. Jen says:

THE best Sesame Street characters EVER.

  49. Anonymous says:

    OH MY GOODNESS.
My mom used to threaten me with these guys if I wouldn’t go to sleep or clean up my toys. XD So glad other people were also afraid of these adorable aliens!!!!

  50. Bekah says:

awesome! But wheres’ the video where they sing? i still remember!

  52. SpankZ says:

    yiip-yip-yip-yip-yip-yip chicken!

  53. SassyTheDragon says:

    I love those guys ^^
I’ve had to think of the scene in Drawn Together with the suicide help thing, as the telephone rang XD

  54. Marty says:

These things were the the best part of sesame street. They’re hilarious

  55. Nyxie says:

Oh my God…I remember them from when I was like, 3. I loved them.

  56. Cathy says:

They scared the crap out of me. and still do.

  57. John says:

These things would leave me rolling on the floor laughing so hard, I couldnt hear the rest of the show
