Epic Win: Kickball

image001

Submitted by Monique R

There are some playground wins so epic that I wonder why we haven’t posted them before. Kickball — an easy-to-pick-up-and-play sport that (sort of) combined soccer and baseball — is arguably the best recess game (well, maybe four square).

It just sucked being picked last.

  1. him says:

The guy kicking the ball in the picture is running like a fairy.

  2. AmInIowa says:

I was the one who got picked last. I sucked at kickball. I hated gym. With a passion.

  3. Lefty says:

I hated the people who you could never pitch good enough for.

    “I want it bouncy!”
    *rolls ball*
    “Too bouncy. . . ”
    *they roll ball back*
    *tries again with less bounce*
    “Now it’s not bouncy again.”

  4. toribug11 says:

ah, the one thing i was good at. kicking things into the air. did the guys at anyone else’s school always end up kicking off their shoes??

    • Bunniemagyk says:

We always had one wisea$$ that would manage to launch his shoe along with successfully getting the ball into the street where we were not allowed to go and get it. I was also always picked last because I couldn’t run fast but I had a hell of a kicking leg so it really didn’t matter how fast I ran. Plus, we played on concrete so no sliding into bases unless you really wanted road rash or a broken limb.

  5. Mr. Horsepower says:

As a kid growing up in the deep south, I always wore kid size steel toe boots to elementary school, making me the ringer player whenever we played kickball. I remember one time in 4th grade, I kicked one over the back fence and the ball landed in the back of a passing pickup truck. This was in the late 80’s before kickball was considered “unsafe” by the genius school board.

    • Ela13 says:

how is kickball unsafe? i think it’s safer than many games out there that we’d play… like wall-ball…

      • Mr. Horsepower says:

I don’t really know. I guess they thought someone could fall or run into someone or something else equally retarded or something.

      • Lady Proserpina says:

It’s unsafe for klutzy kids, like myself in middle school, who manage to cause themselves great harm on accident. I broke my wrist playing kickball… I can’t remember how, exactly- I may have trod on the ball while I was running and it was rolling. Seems like that would have required a lot of skill and precision to manage (or a good deal of bad luck).

    • Tboz says:

I, too, am from the deep south-still here matter of fact. I haven’t heard of it called “unsafe”. Did they seriously ban it from schools? Man…..

  6. timmis says:

We just called it “Soccer-Baseball”, and it would start at recess by a couple kids hanging onto the batting cage in the yard chanting, “Soccer-Baseball! Soccer-Baseball!” over and over till enough kids came to play.

  7. Kat says:

So…I’m guessing I’m the only one that highly disliked this sport?

  8. Casa says:

If you didn’t like it, you sucked… and probably have a job as a paper pusher now.

I LOVED kickball. ^^ At our school the girls were required to wear skirts and nice shoes, but I’d alwayes take me shoes off and play barefoot. The trick was to bom it back out far enough that you didn’t have to run in your dress. ;)

  9. hee hee says:

I liked it better than softball or baseball or tee-ball (invariably I would hit the ‘tee’ instead of the ball), cuz there just isn’t any way of missing unless you were TOTALLY uncoordinated… my problem is I would kick it way high so that it had so much ‘hang time’ that even the slowest out-fielder could walk up and post themselves under where it was coming pretty much straight down.

    • Mr. Horsepower says:

If you were really lucky, though, they’d put the one spaz kid no one liked in the outfield and he’d mess up and the ball would smash him in the face and everyone would laugh and he’d run off crying and you’d get a homerun since everyone was distracted by the bloody, crying nerd. Those were the best kind of homeruns. Point plus respect for embarrassing someone that nobody liked.

  10. brmbug says:

My favorite thing about kickball(s) is the sound. *thwang*!

  11. brandon_ha says:

Why is the pitcher scratching her crotch?

  12. jomarthegreat says:

My 3rd grade class had a kickball ’season’. The teacher split us up into two teams and we picked names for the team from the MLB teams at the time; we ended up with one team being the Blue Jays, and the other being the Athletics (my team). I don’t quite remember the standings at the end of the season (we had a winter hiatus) but I think the Jays won at the end of the year, so they got a prize.

  13. that one chick says:

HA! ya know there are adult kickball leagues all over the place. you just gotta look hard enough.

  14. MJ says:

We called it “California kickball” for whatever reason. Im from British Columbia, Canada.

  15. Tangaroa says:

The epis win are those American flag shorts. LOL

  16. Morna says:

Such a fun game! And yes, the sound the ball made was the best part.

  17. C says:

    Pitch me some baby bouncies!

  18. Josh says:

That boy in the flag shorts! I totally made out with him at a party! How random that he’s on here, hahahaha. I should let him know of this.

    • Mr. Horsepower says:

I have shorts like that, only instead of an american flag, they’re made out of a confederate flag. I wear ‘em when I go to the pool.

  19. Anonymous says:

Did anybody else play the indoor version? With bowling pins for the bases that you had to knock over as you ran around?

    • Mr. Horsepower says:

I played kickball inside, but not the indoor version. Me and my friends had to end our game early because the librarian got pissed about the broken window and tried to catch us and call our parents. Needless to say I never go to the library anymore.

  20. Jeadra says:

I loved kickball in grade school, then come to find out there’s the Big Balls Kickball League that play over in Tower Grove Park. I thought about joining, then realized I don’t have the time or the drinking stamina to play… :)

  21. Le keLskankk says:

ugggh mccarren park hippies in williamsburg brooklyn :P

  22. Tboz says:

This we leaned to play in first grade (1974) at P.E. (not gym). I was one of the ones picked last to be on a team nearly everytime-not because I was a bad player but because I wasn’t popular. I was just shy & knew no one like others did! For this reason, I hated kick ball days, & we had them at least 3 times a week if I rem correctly. (NOT a good memory…..)

  23. emmawatson says:

I SUCK AT KICKBALL!!!!!!! But i love gym!! i’m in fourth grade!! well going into 4th

  24. Jeej says:

One rainy day, for nostalgia’s sake, my senior class in high school organized a kickball game in the gym.

We were all nearly adults, some were headed toward ivy league sports programs… combined with a Very Bouncy Playground ball.

The adminsitrators put an end to that one very quickly. What a memory though!
