Epic Win: Laser Challenge

laser-tag

Submitted and Written by Rachael G

I never knew what it was when I played it – just a great time outdoors. I recently went to a laser tag arena and quickly remembered playing this as a kid. It was basically some guns and a vest you wore – I mean this was honest to goodness laser tag at home!

WoW (Worlds of Wonder) Lazer Tag sets were the real epic win. Cool looking pistols, sensors, helmets, caps, and a giant-ass rifle that even hold up today.

Unfortunately, too many stupid kids (aka: ONE!) broke into school buildings to play and pointed the gun at a deputy Sheriff who had a shotgun at the ready…

That was the end of all cool realistic gun-shaped toys in the US.

I can’t stand all the bright orange vaguely gun-shaped pieces of cartoony plastic that have been on the market since.

    ZOMG!! FIRST!

  2. Rhizomorph says:

This is just a fail version of Lazer Tag.

    • Jonathan says:

      Agree w/ Rhiz. and Shmoe.

      THIS was the win:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hrhDinWwoyQ

Or if you were ghetto and / or lived near Universal Studios Hollywood, this was the alternative: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YYamJAuwyEA

      • Rich says:

        GHETTO?

        Dude….

Ghetto Lazer Tag is filling your pockets with rocks then picking up a trash can lid-

        CLANK!

That way, you knew who you killed!

    • Some Nerd says:

Yeah, but if you used this more than you went to the Laser Tag place, it became a lot cheaper.

      • Edmund says:

You could buy Laser Tag at Kaybee toys and Toys’r'us. I remember seeing it in the store before any laser tag “courses” popped up. At least in MN, I think. Point is, Laser Tag was available at toy stores too.

  3. Tim says:

Yes that was fun — I go back a little further and had a Star Trek phaser – it worked by wearing a reflector on your belt. It never worked right for me.

  4. dr. genitalia says:

It was even more fun when your parent’s were sitting on the couch and were secretly shooting the t.v. remote at you and it would make you freak out, wondering where your opponent was lol

  5. Don Conway says:

I remember having one of these sets! My brother and I would play with it until the day someone left the vests out in the rain. :’( This is truly and Epic Win

I had the V1 Chest Sensor and the V1 Teamforce Pistol above!

My friend Jen had the WoW LazerTag set. We used to put the vest on her dog (a hyperactive yorkie)…yeah, I suppose the ASPCA would not approve, but the dog got a kick out of it.

I remember Q-Zar…but it was expensive as hell and dangerous if you had even mild asthma.

  9. Leif says:

My friend has these growing up. We didn’t have the back sensors, though. I remember the game always wound up with us back to back 10 feet apart daring one another to turn around.

  10. Jess says:

My brother and I had this type of lazer tag, we would play in the house it was awesome fun but when my mom would get tired of us playing she would kill us with the remote control to the tv

  11. Eric says:

I remember that, my brother and I got the big gun for christmas, one each, and since he got his first, I cried because he was gonna win all the time.

Then my parents gave me mine.

  12. Gmeeh001 says:

I remember playing with this type of lazer tag and it was great for indoor use but for some reason whenever I played with it outside I would get killed just by walking out into the sunlight. So my friends and I made it into Vampire lazer tag where if you had to stick to the shadows otherwise you would be killed by the evil Sun.

  13. D-Voice says:

    Man… I’m 16 and I used to play with those when I was like 7 years old…

Epic. And my dad always shot the TV remote at me, and I was freaking out all the time, wondering where my sister was.

    Good times.

the first affordible laser tag home set with a back sensor.

Most sets including now a days has only a front chest sensor so they cant get shot in the back for being a noob, or on sensor on the gun that you can easily use your other hand to cover it.

Though it really wasn’t a laser. It was a wide infared beam and LED for light effects. Still it was fairly good for a neighborhood game. They also had other weapons besides the EXD. They had a grenad..er I mean trap that had 5 second and 30 second delay and a drone that had hit sensor on the back but mostly just randomly roamed around in a circle and randomly moving foward and shooting. Still fun acessories.
