Epic Win: Apollo 11 Moon Landing
Submitted by Anthony S
Celebrating its 40th anniversary last Monday, the Apollo 11 moon landing is an epic win, and probably the only epic win we’ll ever run that’s not tinged with at least a little bit of irony. Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin, and the other guy — we salute you! (The third guy is Michael Collins, but how many of you could name him off the top of your head?)
For a great interactive history lesson, check out We Choose the Moon.
Conspiracy theorists: please make your case in the comments.

Could you also include the video of Buzz punching a man in the face after the man accused him of being a liar and saying he never went to the moon?
Who wouldn’t punch that guy in the face, I would definite would if anyone talked to me like that.
Come to think of it, what kind of stupid idiot would say the moon landing was a hoax? Can’t people just admire the moment without saying it’s fake?
Man never go to the moon…WAKE UP !! ITS A FAAAAAKE !! THE MOST BIGGER FAIL IN THE UNIVERSE !
I would tell you to go to hell, but… xD
*kneeslap*
OBVIOUS TROLL IS OBVIOUS
Hah nice one =P
Tadaa !

And well deserved it was.
Wonderful Punch! Why haven’t I seen this video before? It’s superb!
What kind of person would vote against this one? The greatest accomplishment of human engineering.
An idiot who will believe the smoke and mirrors instead of asking themselves why the elephant had to go in the box to make it disappear.
See, they accuse those of us who know we landed on the moon of being the ones who fell for the magic show, when they’re the ones who slept through physics class and didn’t get the memo that a animal weighing a couple thousand pounds doesn’t just vanish into thin air.
(stands as tall as possible and SALUTES!)

A better book can be found here, at http://www.amazon.com/Dark-Mission-Secret-History-NASA/dp/1932595260/ref=pd_sim_b_1/184-8468681-8424652, it does not dispute that we went to the Moon but raises the possibilities of what might have been found there. It has quite a staggering weight of evidence too.
Whatever may have been done on the Moon, whether or not they were ‘just doing their jobs,’ and despite much NASA controversy, the men who have flown to the Moon will always remain heroes to me.
Thank you so much for posting this one. As much as I enjoy Nostalgic win this one is the best EVER!! Heroes each and everyone of them including all the engineers and other support personnell that made it happen. NASA we are all proud!!
Man…nothing can be said about this…..The BIGGEST accomplishment man has ever done…..and people voted against it?! WTF? To the real heroes of Earth, I salute you.
Conspiracy theorists, please make your case to my Fat white Ass. We landed on the moon, GTFOver it and find something new to whine about. Seriously.
AMEN, BROTHER!
Sister… but that’s okay.
Think of all the hungry people that could have been fed, all the sick people who could have been cured, how many homeless could have been sheltered, and in short how many real human needs right here on earth could have been met with all the money that was plowed into the moon program.
Look up ‘boondoggle’ in the dictionary.
Discovery and exploration have always been something with no guaranteed return. But that doesn’t make it a waste. Columbus had to struggle for funding to sail to the New World. Not because everyone believed the Earth was flat, they just thought it wouldn’t be worth the expense. And the real funny thing was, Columbus’s initial goal was a colossal failure. Not only did he not reach India, he undestimated how big the Earth actually was. Yet even though that idea was a bust, and other problems followed, Columbus’s “wasteful expenditure” changed the world forever.
Incidentally, the Moon does hold significant investment worth. Saw a documentary on Nat Geo called “Living on the Moon” which claimed that Moon soil could be imported for fusion purposes, resulting in more efficient, less wasteful nuclear energy. Also, solar energy can be gathered much more efficiently on the Moon than on Earth, converted into microwaves and beamed back here, where they can be converted again to electricity. And then there’s all the potential mineral deposits from all the meteorites that struck the moon…
Thar’s gold in them thar craters!
Not to mention the fact that we wouldn’t have computers, cell phones, or even microwaves without the stuff we did to make it to the moon. I saw a special on the thirtieth anniversary of the moon landing that said we were still getting something like three dollars OUT of ever one dollar put IN to NASA. When the programs first started that was more like sixteen out. So yeah, it’s gone down a little, but we’re still getting more out than we put in.
Going to the moon has satisfied real human needs. Think of how many sick people (and so on) would be dead without today’s technology, much of which we discovered (or we made more efficient) thanks to programs initially funded by NASA.
Hey, what about VELCRO?
It’s a magic way to collect cat hair off my rug!
Have you ever seen the movie “Moon”? It came out this year with little to no advertising and played with the idea of extracting He-3 from the rocks up there.
Though it was more of a sci-fi/psychological film.
“Not because everyone believed the Earth was flat.” Uh, everyone? That’s basically a hyped up myth. Please increase the scholarship past the McGraw-Hill stage before further muddying up the field of history and passing it down to an impressionable generation. E.g., fake moon landings. On the other hand, your comment regarding the National Geographic documentary makes it sound worth seeing. Gold, dollars to be made, profiteering from technology…,yeah, that sounds more like us.
=== “Not because everyone believed the Earth was flat.” Uh, everyone? That’s basically a hyped up myth. ===
You’re saying that it was a hyped-up myth that not everyone believed the world was flat. The logical extension of that proposition is that in truth, everyone DID believe the world was flat. Please cite a source for those who may wish to “increase the scholarship past the McGraw-Hill stage.”
That’s not quite correct. Everybody at that time knew the world was round, and everybody knew that if you sailed west long enough, you’d get to India. The problem is that it was so far away that nobody believed it was possible. Columbus was actually a pretty smart guy; he knew it wasn’t possible, but he also suspected there was another continent between Europe and India — so he fiddled with the math and fudged the numbers to make it /look/ like it would be possible for him to get to India so that he could get some government support. Then he went and discovered the continent that he already knew was there.
Interesting. Can I see a source of some sort?
Thank you! Now if you could only convince the majority of elementary teachers to pass this down to kids instead of the world was flat – oh, and my parents, too – it would be greatly appreciated.
For the time being, yes…..but the moon landing means so much more for the Future of Mankind than just some simple idea of a man walking somewhere no man has walked before.
Ever since man has told its story, It has dreamed of a day when he too could be among the stars. With the moon landing we were one step closer than we have ever been and today, we are getting closer and closer….
What better way to solve problems with the Earth, than to move away from the Earth? The Earth is obviously over its holding capacity as it is and the Moon Landing 40 years ago helped pave a way for us to possibly rid the Earth of her over-population and give her reasonable numbers that she can work with….The Outcome, less Widespread hunger in Mankind because mankind is more widespread….get it?
I look at your last paragraph thinking, “Wherever you go, there you are.”
Just think how many real human needs could be met right here on earth if you just sold your own computer and gave the money to the poor.
Look up Hypocrite in the dictionary. Oh wait, you should sell that too.
I hereby award Matador with TWO internets.
Many people made the same complaint back in the 60’s. However, space program funding has fallen since then, but strangely enough, there are still starving people in the world!
The sad fact is, there is no return in giving money to feed starving poor people. It only allows them to reproduce and create more starving poor people. The only thing that can help them is education, but very few people realize this. Besides, to many people, this sort of education is the same as an assault on their cultural values (have a bunch of kids and hope enough make it to adulthood to support you in your old age).
Ugh.
Do you realize that NASA spent the money, they didn’t stuff it in the rocket and have Neil and Buzz toss it around when they got there.
The money kept an engineer from starving. It gave a scientist a home. It went to pay a lot of people to do a lot of stuff in a lot of places in the country. Astronauts and mission controllers, welders and riveters, janitors and secretaries, electricians and research students. The money went to buy steel, and aluminum, and glass. Plastics, pencils, advanced fabrics, notepads, computers, white-out.
The employees getting a paycheck put their money back into the economy, so the grocer, the real-estate agent, the lawyer, the guy who changes oil at the local shop, the paper boy.
“Do you realize that NASA spent the money, they didn’t stuff it in the rocket and have Neil and Buzz toss it around when they got there.”
Best visual image ever.
Also, great post.
haha, yeah. I get the image of Duke Nukem at the strip club, but in a space suit.
The real boondoggle is people being more impressed with Michael Jackson’s moonwalk than with the real one. And to all those people who think it was a waste of money, research all the medical science, technology and commerce that came from the space programs. The space programs created jobs, raise expentations of kids and made us believe in dreams. Now we live in a nightmare of other people’s bad choices for us.
God knows I couldn’t survive without my memory foam. Thank you , NASA!
The men and women of the space program are ALL heros, and not just the ones from the United States. Lest we forget, Russia still claims the First Human in Space, Yuri Gagarin. He was also a hero. So is Valentina Vladimirovna Tereshkova, the first woman in space.
ANYONE who has left our home planet and strove for the stars is a hero. I’ve met a couple, and the spirit of curiosity and exploration that they carry is something to emulate.
Sweet, this got on the home page. (i sent this in =P)
I feel that this was one of the biggest achievements that we’ve ever done. It is extremely dangerous and challenging, but we could do it. Now, I wasn’t born when this happened, but I’ve seen the videos, images, ect, and I find it unreal. It’s awesome that this happened! I find it sad that some people don’t believe it happened.
Regardless, this is a time that we will NEVER forget.
I agree. I’ll never forget that whole period in history and sitting around waiting for them (it seemed like it took forever!) to come out of the Eagle that day!
Conspiracy Theorist: It was all a fake! They filmed it in a Studio obviously!!
Me: Give me one peice of evidence you yourself have seen that says it is fake…
Conspiracy Theorist: You can see the flag hanging in the wind. You dont get wind on the moon!!
Me: You dont get wind in a film studio either, and I doubt they used a fan…
The number of people ive met who claim the moon landing is a fake but have no response to that simple fact is staggering.
You can also tell them that “Yes, there ARE winds on the Moon, they’re called Solar winds, and they are the same ones that create the Aurora Borealis… or is THAT a fake too?”
‘Mythbusters’ proved that all the claims of the conspiracy theory can be refuted. All their “evidence” failed to prove that the landing was faked.
Ooh, really? I’ll have to find that episode…
Read Michael Collins excellent memoir “Carrying The Fire” and you will never forget his name again.
What I want to know is how we had the technology 40 years to fake a moon landing, but we can’t fake one today. Just think about it!
And yes, I CAN name the third guy, Michael Collins, off the top of my head…I have HIS book too! Think about it just a second, Collins was the most important person on the mission. If they landed and HE couldn’t get them home, well???
Does anybody watch Mythbusters? The debunked tons of that conspiracy theory nonsense, including the “waving” flag and the weird lighting in the video. Give it a rest already!
anyone who gave this a thumbs down is a communist
thing you gotta ask is if man did land on the moon 40 years ago why with much better technology has man not done that feat again
it has nothing to do with technology levels. it has to do with the amount of funding the space program gets. its going downhill fast, especially now that they’re trying quite hard to get ride of the shuttle program even though they dont have a replacement for it. whoever decides the amount of money that goes into these programs is an idiot. we get so much out of the space program and people dont even realize it. besides, what would the point be of returning without some sort of habitat-building goal? we arent ready for that yet. so what, we go and and go “oh look, its that very rock buzz saw 40 years ago! awesome!” yeah, no
as someone who has lived 30min from the Cape almost their entire life and seen more rockets and shuttles than they can count, i am extremely proud of this part of our history. if anyone gets the chance to go to the space center, they should. the sheer size of these vehicles is awe inspiring, as is the boom they cause that makes my house shake.
aye, funding really is the issue. In order to go to the moon (without using the ISS as a mid-way refuel/launch point), we would need the power of the Saturn V rocket again, and their price tag is just as immense as they are. Not to forget that most of the people familiar with building them and making them go up without exploding mid way are either retired, have forgotten a majority of the information, or are dead. Besides, the ADD media that we have in this country wouldn’t be able to follow a new moon bound space program past exiting Earth’s orbit.
Heck, I think even MY AdDHuhDuh would be able to follow a trip to the moon.
I actually got to take both Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins pictures on the day before the anniversary. They were at the Smithsonian Air & Space Museums signing their autobiographies. What a treat that was!
EEEEEEEEEEE!
Buzz:
“Hey AH….I didn’t land on the moon? Watch me land a PUNCH, effing moron!”
um fyi we never actually went there. theres your irony
That’s not an ironic statement. Moronic, maybe…
