Epic Win: Fruitopia

once upon a win

Submitted by Chelsea V

TIME named Fruitopia as one of the Top 10 New Products of 1994. It was Coca-Cola’s way of entering Snapple’s territory, but Fruitopia was far sweeter than any other “fruit juice” on the market. The drink was discontinued in 2001. Coca Cola reintroduced a new drink under the name Fruitopia by Minute Made a couple years ago, but it’s an entirely different beverage. You can still get the original Fruitopia in Canada, though. They’re doin’ it right, up north.

  1. Rick says:

    I GOT A FRUITOPIA CAP!

  2. Amanda says:

    Strawberry Passion Awareness!

  3. SpacemanSpiff says:

They’re doing it right up north because they’re using cane sugar instead of corn sweetener. Much better taste.

  4. katedid says:

I remember they used to sell this in the school vending machines because it was “healthier” than soda… yah right lol…

  5. dude says:

really? you can’t get fruitopia in US? I live in Canada and here I was taking fruitopia for granted…from now on I’ll be more appreciative of fruitopia.

  6. blah says:

A better name would have been High Fructopia.

  7. Hyuzen says:

Ya i was gonna say, discontinued? i just had a fruitopia today, but thats just another reason why canada is the best nation in the world. ever.

  8. Emily says:

In school, it wouldn’t be “let’s go to the soda machine on break” it was “let’s go to the Fruitopia machine”.

If my day wasn’t going my way, you know a Strawberry Passion Awareness would fix that right up!

  9. smuffle says:

Here I was thinking “what are they talking about? Fruitopia’s still around…” but then I read the paragraph and realized that’s ’cause I live in Canada.

  10. Cee says:

Haha, smuffle, I was just thinking the same thing. “I just saw Fruitopia at the store, how is it discontinued??”

I drank Fruit Integration by the gallon as a kid.

  11. that one chick says:

wow I totally forgot this even existed! I used to drink this all the friggin time as a kid!!.

  12. MsMsBurning says:

    Fruitopia? WTF?

  13. null says:

Lived off the kiwi flavor in high school.

  14. Becka says:

I LOVED this stuff. In my senior year of high school (00-01), every day for lunch I would have a 3 Musketeers bar and a Strawberry Kiwi Fruitopia. The first one I ever had was the Strawberry Passion Awareness. Takes me back… and makes me want to go to Canada!

  15. em says:

OMG I used to love that stuff. It was so sweet it would dye your mouth fun colours and kind of hurt your tongue,

  16. Alli says:

I’m Canadian, and I can’t stand Frutopia. The strawberry kiwi flavour tastes like chemicals. >_<

  17. NealBananaPeel says:

We can still get Strawberry Passion Awareness up here in Maine. Only at the local McDonald’s though.

    • the primarch says:

I’m from Wisconsin, and there is only one place in the whole state you can get fruitopia still in the whole state is at the Grafton McDonalds. (its even freaking strawberry passion!)

  18. RearEchelon says:

This stuff was disgusting. They all tasted like melted popsicles that someone added more sugar to. I hated Fruitopia; at the beginning of my senior year in high school, my school replaced ALL the soda machines with Fruitopia. I was sick of the stuff inside of a week.

  19. Meg-Meg says:

Do they do these in England? It sounds yummy! ^_^

  20. Em says:

ROAD TRIP to Canada!! I see I’m not the only one who loved Strawberry Passion Awareness…takes me back to summer camps vintage 1998-1999 era. But some years later, I seem to remember trying some again and not liking it at all. So either they changed their recipe, or I got a hold of the Minute Maid stuff. Anyway, glad to hear I can still get the original thing if I’m ever in Canada.

  21. Katie says:

Fruitopia was discontinued at one point? Really? I guess I can chalk up another reason why Canada is so awesome. ;)

I used to drink this stuff so much when I was a kid. I loved Fruit Integration and Raspberry Kiwi. Strawberry Passion Awareness was just to sweet for me though.

  22. Basara549 says:

I preferred the Tangerine flavor of Fruitopia…

After it went away, I’ve had to rely on the (rarely available) Minute Maid and Tropicana Orangeades.

I loathe carbonated fruit drinks (Mountain Dew doesn’t count, as it’s barely fruit flavored – but I prefer the recent “Throwback” sugar-sweetened version of it – MUCH smoother than modern “MTN Dew”)

  23. Edward says:

I am strongly compelled to comment with two Simpsons quotations. I can’t even just choose one.

I came to see your utopia. But now I see that it is more of a fruitopia.

    AND:

Fruitopia! The iced tea brewed by hippies, but distributed by a heartless, multi-national corporation.

  24. Nicolle says:

We had a Fruitopia vending machine in the lobby of my elementary school for about the first four years I went there. Then the parents lobbied to have it removed because they thought it was unhealthy. All the different flavors got replaced by Dasani water (in plain old water flavor, of course) when there was a drinking fountain RIGHT NEXT TO THE MACHINE.

  25. jesi says:

haha i loved this as a middle schooler because it was a “hippie” juice… TOTALLY not really but i was like “ooh! awareness! COOL!” sadly i have become far too jaded to 1. trust advertising that much and 2. think hippies are cool.
can we get some other awesome 90s drinks? how about orbits?? with the gross bubble tea-esque jello gobs in it? i saved some orbits bottles for the longest time.
surge?? i believe surge invented the widemouth can.
remember when all sodas came with the narrow-mouth can? and the days prior to the “fridge pack” 12 pack and the “cube” 24 pack? the old 24 packs looked like a boom box.

  26. kirby says:

wow.. i had totally forgotten fruitopia. i was an addict as a kid too, so u’d think i’d have realized it disappeared . hmm

  27. Kit says:

My uncle worked for coke, and for some reason decided every christmas to send Fruitopia t-shirts to me and my brothers. I had 11 at one point. Finally cleaned out my closet last year and gave away all but one that I kept to remind me of the teeth-rotting hippy-drinks of my youth.

And those of us in Canadia may still have it, but I’d trade it for caffeine loaded Mountain Dew. Man I miss that.

  28. Anonymous says:

i definitely had frutopia the other day at mcdonalds… yay Massachusetts!

  29. Kate says:

Jeez, as a Canadian I read that and thought: Fruitopia isn’t a “Nostalgic” anything, they come out with a new flavour every other year. I have two cans in my freezer.

You’re missing out Americans, missing out.

  30. MoJo says:

Man, this takes me back! Like others, I had the Strawberry Passion Awareness every day for lunch. If the machine was out, I would switch it up with some Mt. Dew. I sure miss the Fruitopia. *going to Orbitz to book tix for Canada!*

  31. Amanda says:

This one time in 6th grade my friends and I all had a “fruitopia drinking contest” during lunch. We all chugged about 8. And then we had a peeing contest.

  32. Captain Obvious says:

Yeah, that’d be Minute Maid® there, sport.

  33. Dea says:

They have the “real” Fruitopia at McDonald’s here in the Chicagoland area, as well…..the SUPER sweet, so-not-juice stuff. Mmmm….is good mixed 50/50 with iced tea….

  34. Anonymous says:

god i miss frutopia! thats all i would drink when they were out.

  35. turtlegirl784 says:

The red one was pretty much the best thing I’ve ever tasted. Damn you, Coca-Cola for taking it away from me! And that Minute Maid stuff is boring crap – a terrible substitute!

  36. Anonymous says:

my college roommate got one of those from a vending machine three months after it’s expiration date. It had fermented. It made her drunk.

  37. Amanda says:

I was just reminiscing about fruitopia during my middle school years the other day, i remember alternating between that and the fruity shasta drinks in the can, that stuff was the best….the beverage world is not the same without it!

  38. meadhbh says:

they got rid of it in the states? sucks to be you guys haha

  39. emily says:

I was about to say, what the heck?? I’ve got 2 things of fruitopia in the fridge, strawberry passion awareness, have it all the time. Our mcdonalds even has it as a fountain drink!

  40. Rich says:

All Fruitopia was is the predecessor of that STARBUCKS effing shiat.

It was all status and a way to show you drank cool drinks.

    The names were very cool!

    Urinary Tract Infection Flush.
    Color My Stool Red!
I Paid Too Much for This.

  41. withme92 says:

    Fruitopia by Minute Made sucks.

  42. Isabelle says:

Hope about we make a deal; We Canadians will ship you tree cases of Fruitopia if you send back a crate of Trix xereal. I can’t find it anywhere!

  43. Zero says:

Ho shi- I remember this stuff.

  44. Lauren says:

I live in Canada and it never occurred to me that Fruitopia wasn’t available everywhere! Fruitopia is everywhere here and it’s the best! My fave is Strawberry Passion Awareness.

  45. Heather says:

lol this stuff used to be all I drank in high school

  46. Anonymous says:

i miss this from middle school :(

  47. Dixie says:

This was my drink nof choice in middle school.. The green was my fav.. dont remember what it was though

  48. Kelly says:

We had a Fruitopia drink machine in High School. Didn’t realize they were discontinued.

  49. amyrenee2413 says:

*droooools* raspberry kiwi karma is my addiction…. i thought everywhere still had fruitopia!!!!!
