Epic Win: Bow Biters

once upon a win

Submitted and Written by David W

Everyone at my school had these as a kid. They were plastic clips in the shape of cartoon characters that kept your shoe laces from coming untied.

» 23 Blasts From The Past

  1. lufflaff says:

OMG, yes yes yes!!!! I LOVED these things!! I swear, if I could find them, I would absolutely wear them on my shoes.
though, I think they fell off more often than they kept my shoelaces from coming undone. I think it was more about accessorizing at an early age..

    • Juarez says:

wow,if you’d wear these today,i mean,You would be bullied out of your SOCKS man!
(ittle wordplay from a kitten of the icanhascheeze side of the site)

  2. Juniper Jupiter says:

Oh, holy crap!! My little sister ACTUALLY HAD THE GARFIELD ONES! :D

She always had trouble tying her shoes, even after learning how, she never could get the bowknot tight…so when we helped tie the knot in the morning, Bada bing! there ya go!

  3. dave says:

    I had ninja turtles ones!

  4. Allison says:

I had ones with a hot pink cat wearing green sunglasses.
Kind of a worthless accessory, but that didn’t matter when you were 8.

  5. Weavemistress says:

I had these, but I got them from the Goodwill, so I never knew they were for your shoelaces until today. I just clipped them onto everything else, pencils, books, the shelf, etc.

  6. mojojo says:

At least you still had to have some clue on how to tie, nowadays a lot of kids shoes have velcro.

  7. JayPea says:

My kids had Snoopy ones. They were cool.

  8. Anonymous says:

you would get beat up if you had those on, so I had to settle for those curly laces, which were also very win!

  9. Simian says:

These were only cool if you were obese and had too many cats (read more than one).

  10. vi31 says:

I thought the fuzzy Garfields on the right just clipped onto the lapel of whatever jean jacket you were wearing that day.

  11. Andi says:

My parents wouldn’t let me have these….though I think I had the curly laces. After I learned to correctly tie my shoes, of course.

  12. D.R. says:

I used to just put them on pencils. And my notebook. And my fingers. :)

  13. kirby says:

i had one of those fuzzy garfields on the right, and have never had a freakin clue what it was for or where it came from. interesting to see it here.. i never did the clips but totally rocked rainbow curly laces :)

  14. Will B. says:

The fuzzy things on the right aren’t bow biters, but the plastic things on the left are. I loved bow biters when I was a kid… But they were so hard to open that my dad often had to pry them open with a coin, and then half the time they would break in half as a result!

  15. Zelda says:

I had pink Power Ranger ones. My sisters had black Power Ranger and Garfield.

  16. Buglet says:

Oh my word, I had a single Garfield clip, and I never knew what it was for. I think it belonged to my older cousin, and she gave it to me coz I loved Garfield. I used to clip it to everything, from curtains to my own ear, and it never occurred to me that it was for shoelaces….

  17. Tboz says:

These had to be from the late ’80’s or early ’90’s, right? I think I am remembering one of my kids having these-and it was Garfield!

  18. Jeej says:

I had one of the fuzzy garfields too.
I didn’t know they were related to anything with shoelaces, maybe i already knew how to tie my shoes by then.

  19. Alice says:

OMG I had those, they were awsome!!!!

  20. Anonymous says:

My 3rd grade teacher had these as prizes we could get if we had enough volunteer points. I got some because I liked garfield, but had no idea what they were.
This is a 90’s kid speaking.

  21. Razor says:

My hs boyfriend was a pretty good bowler, and one year when he went to bowling camp I managed to get a hold of his equipment bag (with his mom’s help). I changed his laces for day-glo ones and put the Garfield bowbiters on them. He was initially rather upset but a year or so later he was still wearing them…XD

  22. Anonymous says:

I had some of these as a kid too, and now I am actually searching desperately for some for my 5 year old, he’s still trying to learn to tie his shoes. So would love a set of these but can only seem to find them on ebay. Wish I could just go to wal-mart or target and buy some, even the shoe stores don’t even carry them anymore.
