Epic Win: Casio Super Magic Diary

Submitted and Written by Brenna M
When I was in 5th grade, my friends and I would exchange the FIRST text messages during class with the casio Super Magic Diary. One model even had a remote control for a television, and we’d change the channel during educational videos. It had a digital filing system for names and phone numbers, and you could create portraits of your friends.

FIRST!!!!
>: (
I have this, and it still works! i didnt know anyone who had another set so i didnt ever use the messaging or remote battles.. and at 4 kilobytes of memory, it didnt seem to hold much. but i love it all the same
So funny that this is on here today; my best friend and I were just reminicing this weekend how we had a nearly identical device made by Sega (insides/programs were exactly the same, case was slightly different)
We were the coolest kids in class with these. Then a bunch of other kids started buying them, and our teacher had to outlaw them and take them away because we were sending too many text messages in class.
OMG! How young are you?!?
I had a knockoff but I just used it mostly for translating “poop” in other languages……I was at that age.
Whoa, I can’t believe you guys actually put this up here! I would’ve never thought of this again. XD Awesome, awesome device!!
I always desperately wanted one of these when I was little! Then I got a knock off one–but it had the Spice Girls on it, so I was happy. Too bad it was a piece of crap with none of the features the casio one had.
YES! God I loved my Super Magic Diary! I think I had every other knock off version too at some point!
OMG, I forgot about this! Yes, I had one, and I absolutely loved it! I blame it for my gadget envy today. In fact, I think I had two, because they always ended up getting sat on.
never had this one I had one of their original Data Bank watches though, that was as cool as I got in highschool :/
This thing was AWESOME!! I remember having one and I had so much fun with it. It was fantastic. Then my sister broke it and my mother gave me a cheap knock off that never did match up to the original. They need to bring this one back.
My mom and I both got fancier versions than the one listed (probably a later version?) and I still have them both! I love them still, even though I upgraded to an iPod touch…
:O I have one like this and it has a pet in it. Like a little doggy or something. I never understood how to use it though since no one else has/had one.
I have one with a puppy also.
Of course, it was my brother’s first. I still feed my little doggie. :3
Duuuddee, I gave this a thumbs up, even though it never let me actually let me express my innermost expressions and emotions in digital form. It left me fewer symbols than a damn text message! But it held all of my phone numbers, which is more important…
Hmmm…
I remember mine. It was the football one with a TV remote inside. I had a teacher convinced the Channel 1 monitor in the classroom was possessed.
While IR is crap for communication over distances of more than a few yards at any speed, one of these with a Zigbee radio would be godlike.
An Atmel Mega 256 or Freescale Coldfire, SRAM chip, flash chip, cheap 128×64 or 256×128 LCD, Zigbee radio, IRDA transceiver flat-pack Li-Polymer battery and Lithium coin cell for backup would result in a machine smaller than the original and with dozens of times the power and thousands of times the storage space. That, and a self-organizing mesh network that could relay signals all over if units were within about fifty feet of each other.
heh, you guize had channel 1? they filmed that in my hometown. we wer the first middle school in the country to get drug tested for sports, so the did a HUGE 3 day piece on us. my little fatass was all over chan1 (whittle)
oh channel 1… that deserves it’s own entry
Omg. I totally remember this. In fact, I had the same model as shown in the picture, exactly the same model. I remember playing the BATTLE game for hours not knowing wtf to do. Does anyone have model numbers or any other info on this? I definitely need one right now.
I had something called a DataZapper, along the same lines, took it with me everywhere and loved it, kind of like what my iPhone is to me now….
OMG, I had one of those!! I totally forgot about it. I don’t think I knew how to use it, though. lol.
lol wow, i had something like this when i was in the 4th grade. i loved it! the battery got messed up though and then i lost it.i also didn’t have enough friends to store their numbers on it. i don’t even know what i used it for, i just thought i was cool.
I had one of these. I too knew no one else with one.
OMFG i had one, i had one I HAD ONE!!! best toy evar. we already had the universal remote watches in like ‘89 or so, but this was the SHIZZZNIZILLE.
it was the first text messaging device widely available, and the portrait feature could be scary accurate…..weird how limitations make tech better…
i had one of these!!!!!
I put mine in my gym bag filled with damp volleyball stuff.
I lost my notes on how hot my GF at the time was.
I actually found mine in my parents attic last winter but the screen was busted… oh the memories!
I had one of these!!! Except it was the girly pink/purple “Dear Diary”.
I had a cheap ripoff one of these (or an early ripoff, I don’t think they had the texting capabilities at all yet back then) that pretty much only had a planner, address book and calculator, but I LOVED the thing. Even though in 6th grade I had absolutely nothing to put in the planner and I had so few friends that I knew all their phone numbers by heart. Still a great piece of nostalgia!
I had this! and it was amazing. Mine was called a secret sender though, but it looked identical.
OMG!!! I totally forgot about this!!! AMAZING!! I had one in 4th grade!
Wow, I had one of those… And so did my sister. I remember sitting down at the table pretending they were laptops.
We had the ones with the soccer game on it. In class it was mayhem with all the text messages being sent and all the beeps.
Also, I remember pretending the infrared port was a camera. I’d “take pictures” of classmates.
“Is it done yet?”
“No… It takes a while.” *makes portrait*
had one and i never understood how to work the son of a bitch
I completely forgot about this but I definitely had one! I loved making the portraits of my friends.
