Epic Win: Candy Buttons

win-pictures-candy-buttons

Submitted by E Dedd

Candy Buttons were little sugar candies that you ate off a strip of paper. Maybe that sounds silly today, but candy is all about fun ways to get your sugar fix (Fun Dip, anyone?). Candy Buttons were an awesome treat, if you didn’t mind unintentionally eating little bits of paper.

  1. bspinky says:

I was the nerd that didn’t want to eat the paper, but I LOVE these!

  2. Emily says:

I’ve always hated candy buttons. The amount of work it takes to pick the paper off of these things was never worth it, and they are so small that if you did decide to leave the paper on them you could always taste it with the candy. Fun Dip on the other hand, is still a favorite… along with wax bottles and candy necklaces.

  3. Sano says:

xkcd ref ftw! When i first saw that comic i had to look up what a turing machine was.

  4. Nogitron says:

I hated these things. The local candy shop used to make them on site, and the smell created would give me a raging migraine in under 60 seconds. I will always have an uncontrollable hatred for these …

  5. mojojo says:

I was one of the OCD ones that went one at a time checking for paper. Then I realized it wasn’t worth the time.

  6. hee hee says:

I think these were one of the many things that ‘banned’ from our school…like slap bracelets, ‘hot’ toothpicks, and other items that were considered ‘distractions’… that and it looked like people were ‘popping pills’ or ‘dropping acid’ or something in class. It was an easy teacher-freaker. :)

  7. Person says:

Ahhh… Candy buttons. I loved those things :)

  8. toribug11 says:

i didn’t really care about the paper. i usually peeled it off pretty well, so there wasnt a lot. you can still get these at cracker barrel.

  9. Nikademus says:

If you ever go to the Wisconsin Dells (In Wisconsin, naturally!) They sell all sorts of old-school candy like this in the tourist-trap candy/fudge shops that almost literally line the main street.

Now I want some rock candy…DAMMIT! *shakes fist at onceuponawin.com*

  10. DeannaS says:

Oh dear, what does that cartoon say about me? I haphazardly tore the buttons off and at them paper and all……..in patterns. Binary code was a favorite of mine. Where is a Geeks-R-Us when you need one?

  11. MadAriad says:

I loved these things but my parents were concerned that they too closely resembled taking LSD so they never bought them for me when I was a kid. LOL.

  12. Glix says:

I was a bit strange. I would lick or somehow moisten the back of the paper and wait until you could see the dots from the back. Then, they would usually just slide off with a little push, and no paper! The pink ones were always a little bitter to me, though.

    • shmoopsypoo says:

now THATS the way to eat a candy button – no paper mess involved and no “extra fiber” in your diet

  13. Hayley says:

    Oh. Man.

These were my favorites. That was what we ate at slumber parties and it kept us going all night. The one that comes to mind is when we found a deer in my friend’s backyard and chased it all over the neighborhood, running on pepsi and those things. x3

  14. Taross says:

    Candy buttons.

“Candy doesn’t have to make sense”
And speaking of which, did the old Chocolate Factory movie get a win here yet?

  15. KaBooM says:

This brings me back, but damn they never really tasted like anything but paper… lol

  16. Anonymous says:

I used to rub the back side of the paper with water, give it a minute, and the buttons would just fall off. then eat a mouthful of little sugar lumps…. take that, childhood obesity! haha..

  17. Amelia says:

Ugh… I hate these things. I finally tried them and ended up eating most of the paper… Fun Dip is delicious. I only eat the white candy stick though.

  18. sadlier says:

man! i love candy buttons! and fun dip! oh! you know wat else is good, pop rocks!

    • Blackqhat says:

Hells yea, love Pop Rocks. They would sell these books at the local book fair with a package taped on to it (the book was all about the science of Pop Rocks) and we’d buy em just for the candy. Eventually the stopped selling em.

  19. Beckles says:

I used to run these under water to get the paper off the stubborn ones.

  20. Laura says:

    @Glix:

OMG! I thought I was the only one who did that! I discovered it once, completely on accident on a rather humid trip to Kansas.

I actually still secretly buy them and eat them that way, too. :)

  21. kirby says:

I never even tried messing with the paper on these, it’s kind of funny that some have. I think I was introduced to candy buttons with a damp paper towel in hand. I still can’t resist picking up a pack of Pop Rocks whenever I see them tho :)

  22. Big foot says:

Did the sweets actually taste nice?

  23. Anonymous says:

i still buy them every once in awhile.. little dots of colored sugar with paper attached. YUM! lol

  24. Jeej says:

I remember them but nobody was allowed to eat them, there was a big panic in grade school because they resembled acid!

It was cool because got an unforgettable lesson about how to differentiate between candy and acid dots on paper, should we come across it! And how it gets absorbed, etc…

  25. Noctem says:

Hah, I don’t know how you guys can say that you didn’t care about the paper. I always hated when there was paper on the back and did what I could to avoid it. Don’t wanna eat paper.

  26. Cathy says:

I ate them right off the paper. Actually last month I bought some so I could relive the pleasure.
