Epic Win: Cool Runnings
Submitted by Shauna P
Cool Runnings was a ‘93 comedy about the Jamaican Olympic bobsled team. True story. The movie also inspired a friend of mine to put an egg in his pants when he went sledding, like one of the characters from the film. The point was to see if it would crack. It cracked. True story.

Cool Runnings is one of my favorite movies but nothing in it is true except for the fact there is a Jamaican bobsled team and they did go to the Olympics. They made up the lives of the team, changed the names, the circumstances in both Jamaica and Canada, and pretty much everything else, but it was a great movie! John Candy at his best.
The crash was real. That was the actual crash footage in the movie.
True but what was also true was in Calgary when they arrived they had all sorts of issues with their equipment and the other top teams helped them out as always with olympic events, other teams come to the aid. Pretty cool movie though. LOL and I still look for the jamacians at every winter olympics in the bobsled and if they qualify I cheer them on.
Lois: Okay. I’m thinking of a movie.
Meg: Is it an action movie?
Lois: No.
Chris: Is it a musical?
Lois: No.
Peter: Is it a good movie?
Lois: It has its moments.
Peter: Cool Runnings.
Lois: Right!
win
double win
One of these movies that I always watch when it’s on TV, although I know that it isn’t even THAT good. It’s a nice, little feel good movie, nothing more, but also nothing less.
“It must be -100 degrees mon!”
(thermometer says 32f)
Classic
One of the greats taken before his time. John Candy, no matter what movie he was in, would always get a smile out of me even if the rest of the movie sucked.
Feel the Rhythm!
Feel the Rhyme!
Get on up!
It’s Push Cart Time!
Cooooool Runnings!
I liked Alive better.
Remind me not to tell you to eat me…
What I remember most about this movie is that it was the first movie I saw after learning about product placement in movies, so I was acutely aware of it while watching.
We used a hard-boiled egg – good luck all winter long!
Oh, Doug E. Doug, you used to be so funny!
I’ll never forget the name of the guy with the egg: Sanka Coffee.
John Candy’s last good film. He really brings the whole thing together.
My uncle was the production Manager! Go uncle Tom!!
Yay! Do tell!!
You ok Sanka?
No mon, I’m dead.
Aaaand you can’t forget to kiss the lucky egg!!!
I was ten when this came out, it was one of the first movies I ever saw in the theater. I haven’t seen it since, and I think I’ll keep it that way.
Sanka, ya dead?
Yah Mon.
You can go pee now.
Too late.
ROFL
A classic movie. It’s humor and decent story helped mask the fact it was more about racial equality than the actual jamacan bob sled team.
Fun little movie. As mentioned, had absolutely jack to do with the Jamaican bobsled team except that there was one, but still a very fun little flick.
This movie was a family favorite when we were little! My Dad bought a little 13 inch TV to put in our van for road trips and Cool Runnings was always on! We practically memorized it! ‘Sanka, ya dead man?!’, ‘I’ll draw a line down your head so it looks like a butt!’, and ‘ I’m freezing my royal Rastafarian neenies off!’ were our favorite lines. We’re practically grown now but my Mom had to buy the DVD! Good times!
I loved this movie…can’t remember if I have it but maybe I’ll Netflix it if I don’t.
*goes off to check massive DVD collection*
totally saw it first time as an in-flight movie, haha! also lol @ the family guy reference, so true!
What a classic! I still sing Jamaica we have a bobseld team at least once every few months.
Nuff people say you know you can’t believe,

Da Jamaycan bobsled teeem!
“ay Jamaica ya know what I meen! Yah Jamaica wee got a boblsed teem!”
Three words.
