Epic Win: Pop-Up Video

Submitted by HooterSampzon13

When Pop-Up Video debuted on VH1 in 1996, it quickly became the channel’s highest-rated show. The format was simple: play campy music videos while word bubbles popped up with brilliant trivia nuggets about the band and video. Where else would you learn that actress Diane Keaton directed Belinda Carlisle’s video for “Heaven is a Place on Earth,” that Michael Jackson’s “Smooth Criminal” video took six weeks to complete (they usually take two days), or that George Michael of Wham! used to stuff shuttlecocks down his pants?

Incorrect source or offensive?

  1. Bunniemagyk says:

WOOT!!! I loved watching this when it was on. I was always hoping they would do more videos though…got tired of seeing the same ones over and over. Still a win though!
Did nostalgic win just Rick Roll us with their example??

  2. Brandon says:

This is definitely a rick roll… but atleast you have a choose going into it. I couldn’t resist, though.

  3. Brandon says:

    choice

  4. Rhiann says:

    I loved this show.
I watched it all the time.
… Questionable choice for the example video though, rofl.

  5. utaduta says:

loved this show. i still try to see it on VH1 classic! they need to do it again!

  6. azriel says:

This was my favorite show for the longest time. I had no idea they ever covered this video! I guess it makes sense though. And yes, we definitely got Rick Rolled. Someone should submit Rick Rolling as an epic win?

  7. Miroku says:

Not much of a Rickroll, since when I seen Pop-Up video I figured they would have that song for the demo.

But this show was epic win.

  8. Phil says:

    YOU RICKROLLED ME!!!!!

  9. Trilobitemk7 says:

It’s a pseudo-rickroll, we are all aware of it, therefor it’s not actualy a rickroll. But that leads to willingly playing the video without considering it a rickroll. therefor it IS a rickroll.

    It is also known as a reverse-rickroll, a double-rickroll and a mindfs*ck

  10. Stick says:

I loved this show. (Still do when they show it on VH1 Classic.)

  11. Multi-Facets says:

Gwaaaah, I miss this show! I always found it funny. Sometimes I even actually learned things.

  12. TheObject says:

Wait, there used to be music videos on VH1? And here I thought that was just some crazy acid trip I’d had.

  13. mojojo says:

I wish they still did this. :(

  14. Strangedaze says:

Wow miss this show. I don’t think Vh1 would bring it back tho, because it’s not a skanky dating show with z list celebrities. :(

  15. ginandtonic says:

Ah, this was back in the good old days when VH1 and MTV actually played music! I could waste a Saturday evening watching this when I was a preteen.

    • MUBNUT says:

Loved this show! It’s so sad that VH1 and MTV refuse to play videos anymore (except at like 4 in the morning). If they brought this show back it’s have to be Pop up Rock of Love or something.

  16. HooterSampzon13 says:

I was sooo happy to see my submission make the main page. I worked really hard trying to get something worthy of it. I figured there would be loads of people o remember this. My mom was a music junkie so we constantly watched this on VH1. I ish I could find a good quality video of the Pop-Up Video they did of “Kokomo” by The Beach Boys.

  17. DizzyM says:

Did Once upon a win just “Rick roll” us?

  18. Anonymous says:

    it’s still on vh1 classic
i watch it every once in a while

  19. Teez says:

aww, i watched this a lot when vh1 was still on satellite in europe! makes me feel even worse about the retarded crap mtv shows nowadays.. :/

  20. Miranda says:

This used to be my favorite show when I was in college…it makes me really sad that they don’t show it anymore. I don’t get VH-1 Classics so I can’t even watch it there!
VH-1 should def. bring it back!

  21. patches says:

voluntarily rick rolld myself just for the nostalgic win…

  22. Anonymous says:

    I hate this videoclip !!!

And that just because stupid retards use it as a fake video trap on youtube…

  23. Andi says:

I wish the red intro screen wasn’t on this, it would make a killer rickroll.

  24. Rich says:

    Loved it.

    Until-
“The tape editor for this video died huffing Old Spice in a Havana Bath House.”

WTF does that have to do with Toni Basil and the video for MICKEY?

  25. LB says:

    BRIIIIIIIIIIIIINNNNG IIIIIIIIIIIIT BAAAAACK!!!!!!

  26. Candyce says:

OMG, HUMONGEOUS EPIC WIN!!!! They play it sometimes on VH1 Classic now but it’s hard to catch and I’m gonna cry when I stop getting it on my free trial.

  27. toomuchcaffiene says:
