Epic Win: Headbangers Ball

Submitted by Melanie H

Music Videos on MTV deserve a Win for nostalgia by themselves, but then you throw in metal and it becomes Epic. Why’d you love The Ball? Who was your favorite artist that you discovered during the wee-hours that Headbangers Ball broadcast?

Incorrect source or offensive?

  1. T. Wolfwind says:

    Megadeth :D

  2. miss tia says:

    alice in chains…slayer….anthrax….loved headbanger’s ball!!!

  3. RCIAG says:

I used to watch the Ball for Ricki Rachtman. He’s the reason I now watch Daisy of Love.

Loved the episode with Alice In Chains at a waterpark. It was hilarious!!

  4. utaduta says:

head bangers ball is were i discovered Nirvana. it was an awesome show!

  5. Chipmunk. says:

Guns N’ Roses, and they trashed the place. Steven Adler was so spaced out.

  6. Bee says:

I wish I was into metal at that time… Took me several years to discover it’s true beauty (although Metallica’s One was always a blast if it came on).

  7. John says:

Im too young for this (20yo)
But damn its still so awesome!

Hail to the gods of metal!

  8. furmommy says:

I loved headbanger’s ball. It was really the only decent thing on MTV at the time. I wish they would sell DVD’s of it (maybe they do and I am so unaware??). I’d love to share that with my grandchildren.

  9. TiredWings says:

Rob Zombie when he decorated the set. This was actually the original Must See TV. I was a DJ working at a rock station and would sneak tunes of the groups I saw into my playlist at night. Good times………….

  10. Basara549 says:

Don’t they replay the classic broadcasts on one of the MTV channels late-night?

One of the most surreal things I ever saw on Headbangers Ball was them introducing a new artist who singing a power ballad. The metal career never panned out (so he switched genres and became a success), but I never forgot that it was Headbanger’s Ball that first inflicted MICHAEL BOLTON on me….

  11. hhead says:

HEADBANGER’S BALL ROCKS!!! That is all. We now return to our regularly scheduled programming. :P

  12. RevolutionHellCowboy says:

Yeah, the original Headbangers Ball was the best (the new version on MTV2 sucks). I’m huge fan of the earlier metal acts such as Slayer, Exodus, Pantera, Sepultura, Anthrax, Prong, Suicidal Tendencies, and many other bands from the 80s through the early 90s.

  13. MWahatten says:

    GWAR!

They’re nothing to hear, but GREAT to see :)

Gosh, wasn’t it wonderful when MTV had something to do with you know.. Music?

  14. Jae says:

I discovered Type O Negative from this show. I vividly remember the music video for Christian Woman stealing away a pretty piece of my innocence. Damn good times. Miss the show.

  15. Jeff says:

Remember the bumper scenes with the trains crashing? S.O.D.’s Milano Mosh. Also turned me into a lifelong Overkill fan.

  16. Someone says:

\m/ Headbangers Ball, and also 120 Minutes. Loved both of them. (most of what was on MTV during that era was crap, but those two shows provided a respite).

  17. Someone says:

Just watched the attached video– OMG the 80’s hair! Big 80’s hair warning! Big 80’s hair warning!

  18. Rich says:

LOL, I met Rachtman at a KLSX (now defunt talk station in El Lay) Parks department fair right after the had liposuction.

He was kind enough to sign a pic for my mom, who began to call me a ‘punkass’ after I came home laughing about his radio show!

    Dude ROCKS!

  19. Cyanide 9 says:

omg….I’m only 18, so I wasn’t around for the good years of this. It’s still on on Saturdays on MTV2, but only for an hour and not until 2 am. It’s time like these that I wish I had a friggin time machine….
