Epic Win: Close Encounters of the Third Kind

“This means something. This is important.”

Richard Dreyfus’ slow decline into insanity and the revelation that he wasn’t really insane, coupled with Steven Speilberg’s incredible vision and cinematography for the time period made Close Encounters of the Third Kind a totally Epic Win. Anyone old enough to remember the film can probably still hum the first few notes that aliens played after the landed, not to mention the most memorable line in the film, as Richard Dreyfus builds a mountain of mashed potatoes.

If you’re a young’un who’s never seen CEo3K, you should go out and rent it so you can see what good storytelling used to look like.

  1. D.R. says:

I love that movie. When I was a kid, it scared the hell out of me. I must admit that sometimes it still does.

  2. Novawolf says:

I loved this movie as a kid. This was inspirational and just… Gah my family is full of Trekkies; I think this was their initiation for me. Whatever it was, it worked :P Loved it~

  3. Meg-Meg says:

I tried watching this once. It bored the crud out of me…

    • foobarbaz says:

Same for me. I hated the characters, found the story to be tedious.

      • JustSomeEnglishTeacher says:

Sat through it for a film class. *yawn*

Kinda had this beef about how man goes crazy, abandons wifey and kids, and then runs away to go explore the galaxy and hang out with aliens, while lady with the kid that got nabbed stays home. Fair, huh?

That, and I can never get that stupid theme-song back out of my head.

        Do-do-do, Dum-DUM!

        • ScruffyKat says:

It takes a certain type of ittelect to realy enjoy this movie. Either you have it you don’t. I loved it, my son was bored with it. It’s like Mony Python, my wife was bored to the bone, my son and I laghted our heads off. I loved close encounters more than E.T.

    • Casa says:

Oh thank goodness!! I was worried it’d just be me. Hated the goram movie. HATED! And I’m a sci-fi kinda person. Like Star Wars, liked Star Trek, liked the old and new versions of Dune… read the books seen the movies… but when it came to this “classic” I just wanted to turn it off.

  4. iGod says:

    Mmm….mashed potatoes!

  5. Smelly says:

  9. supersirenia says:

    BEST. MOVIE. EVER.

  10. Amethyst42 says:

I am in the loved it camp. Did, from seeing in the theatre as a kid, to today.

When they play the music back and forth between the ship and the humans, I cry every time, I don’t know why.

  11. Radioheadrocks says:

Amazing movie. One of Spielbergs best. The special effects are great too.

    • diddleymaz says:

ITS CRAP and so are its remastered versions. Huge disapointment at the time and still boring last time it was on tv,when i thought id see if i had been wrong when it came out. I wasnt ..its still crap!

  12. T3H |_337 /\/\4|\| says:

    Yeah

  13. axl says:

In Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977), the humans and aliens use music and computers to communicate. Spielberg’s father was a computer scientist and his mother was a musician. This fact was only recently pointed out to him on “Inside the Actors Studio” (1994) by host James Lipton and he was unsurprisingly delighted when he realised the connection.

  14. Kelly says:

“I got a fly in my mashed potatoes….” lol

  15. Candyce says:

Soooo not epic win. That was the dumbest movie ever. Made no sense and a horrible ending.

  16. adanu says:

The town that Dreyfus’s character lived in was the town of Muncie, IN. The first alien encounter took place on Cornbread Rd. today u can still go there…
