Epic Win: Salute Your Shorts
Submitted by A Mills
Camp Anawanna we hold you in our hearts! Epic Win for Salute Your Shorts! Remember all of the characters? We couldn’t remember which character represented each stereotype, but we rounded up a few… For instance, we remember Telly (the tomboy/sports junky), Budnick (the douchebag), Donkeylips (the fat kid), and Sponge (the dork). Any we missed? List them in the comments.
This Epic Win was initially not well-received by voters and thus skipped by the Once Upon A Win writing team, however, due to the persistence of people who love this show, the vote count was raised considerably and thus revisited by staff. Don’t see one of your favorite childhood memories on the front page? Check the Voting Pages!

Love this show!
My favorite one was the water balloon war one.
That was a good one but the best imo was the halloween episode with “Zeke The Plumber”.
Also.
Dina Alexander-The spoiled rich girl
Michael Stein-The new guy, also the girls dug him
Bobby Budnick-The bully/snuggler
Donkeylips-The fat kid
Sponge-The nerd
Telly Radford-The tomboy jock girl
Z.Z. Ziff-The hippy chick
Kevin “Ug” Lee-Dimwitted camp counselor.
Ronnie Pinskey-Mr. Perfect
Dr. Khan-Big Brother
AWFUL WAFFLE AWFUL WAFFLE
I kinda liked Ug. I guess I felt bad for him.
Trivia for the day… Budnick (Danny Cooksey) was on Diff’rent Strokes and the voice of Montana Max (Monty the rich kid) on the cartoon Tiny Toons (has that one made it on here yet???)
I liked ZZ, kinda like an early Pheobe from Friends. And Sponge, he rocked.
Ug-LEE Ug-LEE Ug-LEE
Montana Max is on the voting pages, but didn’t do very well…
ahh and danny cooksey played edward furlong’s best friend in Terminator 2 and was in living on the edge music video with edward furlong.
More Danny Cooksey (Budnick) trivia: he had a bit part at the beginning of “Terminator 2″ as Tim, John Connor’s friend.
Oh god, this show was amazing. I am now 22 and if I happen to make a reference to it in a group of people my age, there is no doubt that they will get it.
If I could find this on DVD I would buy it because I looooooved this show with a passion.
Love this show too. And this is actually my favorite episode, because Sponge gets some action. But also because he says the most memorable line in the series imo, b/c I’ve always wanted to answer the phone like him to a telemarketer: “They don’t live here anymore! Stop calling! They’re all dead!”
I liked this show as a kid, but I’m sure if I watched it today, I wouldn’t like it.
i think it would make way more sense to me if i watched it again. i was little so i “enjoyed” it but really had no idea what was going on. the show was basically last call before my daily nap =P
Here, here! It was a fringe show for me. I was just a little too young for it when I watched it.
I could probaby tell you a few characters but I remember the “idea” of the show more.
This show was AWESOME! my friends and I are always talking about the old nickelodeon back when it was actually good and had all that wonderful gross humor that they seem to not be allowed to do anymore.
….just a side note……
I used to work at a school age child day care center on a military base overseas, where I still am, and upon discussing favorite movies with my group of kids, I told them mine was the little mermaid growing up and I watched the tape so many times that it deteriorated and my parents had to get a new one, and one of the kinder gardeners says, “What’s a tape?”, to which I reply, “you know, the kind of movies you put in a VCR”, and the little kid says, “What’s a VCR?”….. I’m only 21 and that made me feel soooo old. But then again, these are kinder gardeners and they have only been conscious of the world around them for about 3 years. All they are used to is dvd’s and dvd players.
what’s worse is when this happens with 15 year olds. i’m 21 too and it’s just as bad when you have the “life before internet” conversation with kids 6 years younger than you.
Aww man I know what you mean about the old nickelodeon… I miss the shows pete and pete… and clarissa (sp?) explains it all. Those shows rocked!! It makes me kinda sad that kids don’t have them now a days… They just seemed like such character-building shows… Ledgens of the Hidden Temple… double dare… and that show that would have kids do crazy stuff.. the guy from star trek was on it ..i think or someone who looked a lot like him… I cant remember the name of it but I remember watching them all when I was little…
I loved this show when I was younger! I’m 28 now and haven’t seen the opening in probably 15 years, but once the song started up, I remembered every line. I always thought the “it makes me want to FART!” part was the best.
Not well-received by voters? Lame sauce! A classic show.
Danny Cooksey was on one of the first 7 episodes of the Dukes of Hazzard. Most notably as being the red-headed kid who is spitting pop at flys in the back of the General Lee as it drives away from the camera in the last scene. On a side note the guy that played Urkel on Family Matters was also in a Dukes of Hazzard episode about a basketball team.
The actor who played Donkeylips was on the MTV dating show “Singled” Out” in the 90s. He was in the pool of 50 guys but didn’t make it out of the pool. I don’t recall them acknowledging him on camera as anything but another random guy in the dating pool. But it was unmistakeably him.
I remember watching that episode of Singled Out with my best friend, and we saw him and were like “Donkey Lips!”
Holy moley Danny Cooksey looks YOUNG!
I was kind of shocked to learn this show was filmed in Griffith Park in Los Angeles.
Also apparently Danny Cooksey was cast for Salute Your Shorts because he looked like a young Axl Rose.
OK good. So I wasn’t the only person to think they wanted the bad-as$$ to look Axl-ish.
I loved the episode where Budnick started “dating” Dina. They had a reference to his “Steve Vai guitar pick” in there. Then he was in the band Bad 4 Good that Steve Vai basically created & produced. I was a rock child & totally in awe of someone my age mentioning Steve Vai when that episode aired.
This is the episode I remember most! The ‘dream sequence’ where Dina muses that her trying to change Budnick wouldn’t be the best thing…”One day, when I’m young and full of life, I’ll say, ‘Honey, let’s go see Guns N’ Roses.’” Budnick, now a deaf old duffer in high-water pants, says “What’s that? Y’ wanna go prune the roses?” (which is odd because they’re not that far apart in age…XD )
LOL and when he freaked out because she put glitter on his guitar pick. Too funny.
i was to old for this show to realy like it. i watched it with kids i baby sat. it was cute. i do miss the old gross out humor they used to have on Nick.
I loved this show!!! It’s a shame that shows like this don’t really exist anymore as they wouldn’t be considered politically correct and there isn’t enough violence. *sigh*
Camp Anawana, we hold you in our hearts!
And when we think *SPLASH* about you
…This thing, it fell apart…
Holy crap. I’d forgotten about this show! This was one of my favorites back in the day.
I have to 2nd this epic win. I miss this show…so many boring afternoons made bearable bc of this.
“Get it right or pay the price!”
XD I say this from time to time, but I don’t think people get the reference. It had been so long that I even probably forgot from time to time.
I remember watching this and Hey, Dude all the time.
Classic Nickelodeon. Now they show stupid Spongebob. Booo.
I can’t believe no has mentioned that Blake Sennett (Pinsky) is in the band Rilo Kiley with Jenny Lewis of Troop Beverly Hills fame.
It was as if God heard my prayers and allowed my two favorite things from my childhood to form a ridiculously awesome band.
Holy moly. How did I never put 2 and 2 together? Pinskey = Joey from Boy Meets World!!!
I am clueless! I loved YCDTOT and most of the other nick shows in the 80’s but I do not remember this one. perhaps that’s why it should have FAILed.
Aaaah! Yes! This used to be one of my favorite shows!! I wish Nick would bring back classic stuff like this. All the shows like Spongebob are so mindless.
LOVED this show. Saw every episode. Knew the theme by heart. Had a huge crush on Pinskey.
I’d love for this to make it on DVD!
Ohhh, I had major Pinskey jones too. And I wanted to be like Telly too.
I didn’t watch a whole lot of TV growing up, so I never saw this show, but having been to and worked at a summer camp, I’m sure I would enjoy it. Now I just have to see if I can find full episodes somewhere…
for some reason the Zeke the Plumber episode just popped into my head.. 20 years old and haven’t seen this show in, god, how many years and that’s where my mind went
