Epic Win: Punch-Out!

Submitted by Jonathan M

Although it was all a simple game of strategy and memorizing punch patterns, there was something magical about Punch-Out. We remember having competitions with our friends to see how far we could get without continuing and that final day when someone got as far as Mike Tyson and then we sat around all day trying to beat him. Then cheats and walkthroughs came out detailing how to beat each character and ruined it all…

This guy is such a pro, he plays the entire game, only getting hit once in the 3rd round by Tyson (Warning: It’s 33 minutes long):

As awesome as it was fighting Mike Tyson on the home version, the original arcade Punch Out is still more epic for me. I can still hear “Great fighting! You’re an up-and-coming boxer!”

    • Anonymous says:

Super Punch-Out for the SNES was an incredible game as well, but far too easy. If you knew the right counters you could beat fighters in under 10 seconds with ease.

  2. remolay says:

due to emulation, I was really tempted to hit enter when the video said push start.

Man I suck at this game

  3. The Gameboy says:

haha, i really wish tyson was in the new one, i loved the original, (with tyson) a store in my town is selling tysons punchout ofr 20 bucks still…

    • 50 1ups says:

I think mr. sandman is suposed to be him.

      • Mettan says:

Nah, Mr. Sandman and Mike Tyson are separate characters.

        • DrFurball says:

Yes, but in the Wii game, Sandman’s record is exactly the same as Tyson’s was in 1987. He also gets a “Iron Mike”-esque makeover in the Title Defense rematch. And he has Tyson’s habit of winking before each uppercut in Title Defense, as well. So, I’m thinking the resemblance was intentional.

  4. DiabloNeonX says:

I still have my NES copy of MTPO, and it’s still one of my all time favorite games. It’s easily one of the best and one of the most addictive games ever made.

  5. Obi says:

What a coincidence, I’ve been playing Punch Out this evening, and Mr Sandman keeps beating me. A legendary classic.

  6. nitrogamer says:

yay! my win made it onto the first page.
this game was awesome, and now is being even more popularized by the recent wii release.

  7. devilwoman says:

i never had mike tyson’s punch out. i have the one with mr. dream. i never got passed the first round.

  8. Crystaldragon says:

When Mike Tyson lost the title Nintendo didn’t want anything related to him so they changed Tyson to Mr.dream.

  9. Mettan says:

I tried playing Punch-Out for the NES once. I sucked at it, couldn’t beat Von Kaiser.

Punch-out for the Wii is good.

  10. IxChel says:

I love the fact that Mario is the ref. Heh.

  11. jnoble says:

I don’t think it was Tyson losing the title that made Nintendo take him out of the game, it was the rape conviction.

  12. NickAWhat says:

I’m not as impressed with the guy from the top video… for whatever reason, he only needs half as many punches as the second guy to knock down Tyson, there’s gotta be some kinda cheat code there.

  13. ralphie says:

For people who don’t know, this game is not as easy as the videos make it look. I played this game to death, but I could never beat Mike Tyson.

  14. TheWhatever says:

what’s funny is that a pop up ad came up for a free game “ko king” and there was a illegal cameo of king hippo lulz. whatever, best game ever. period.

  15. Mr. Crosser says:

Ah yes. Punch-out. I got an NES and this game… good times.

Sometimes, I wish I was born waaay earlier than I was.
