Epic Win: GoldenEye 007

Submitted by Andrew W

GoldenEye 007 revolutionized First Person Shooters, Multiplayer gaming, and video games in general. Whether you were in middle school, high school or college, at one point GoldenEye was an epic party game for just about all boys and for most girls as well.
Just hearing the gameplay music set us on edge, cautious over whether or not one of our coworkers was set up on a rooftop, waiting to snipe us.

  1. John says:

    FIRST!
Yeah it was pure awesomeness back then!

    • Beth says:

Was this the one where you could shoot the guy while he was going to the bathroom?

      • ... says:

Yes. Although technically he was just standing in a bathroom stall. It was amusing to assume he was pooping/about to poop.

        • ... says:

Also, I forgot to add that this is one of the most important games in video game history, and a huge part of my spare time as a child. A true epic win.

  2. Trish says:

I would have to say that this is one of the best video games of all time. EVAR!

  3. Casey says:

Still pure win and awesome. It’s been a decade, and it still gets plenty of time.

  4. Ouin says:

    GoldenEye sucks.
    Quake is a good game

  5. varuna says:

    YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS

  6. Kevin says:

No, it may have revolutionized console FPS games, sort of, but it was still way behind comparable PC FPS games.

    • Miroku says:

Goldeneye came out before Half Life. Also worth mentioning, this game effectivly killed the term, “Doom Clone”.

      Remember that one?

      • Yorbo says:

Shouldn’t this be on Failblog? I mean FPS on a console? Sure, if you don’t mind supbar controls, subpar graphics, subpar multiplayer (splitscreen)… Currently the multiplayer element is solved… the rest remains crap. Good gameplay can win out and I wholeheartedly agree that graphics aren’t all that important if the game rocks, but I still think using a console controller for an FPS feels like digging a ditch with a potato peeler.

        • Bix Nood says:

          This post belongs in Failblog.

This is Nostalgic Win. If you where not there to play it, it may seem bad today.

This whole page is based on nostalgia goggles.

  7. This is the first time I hear of this game :(

  8. Stick says:

When I think of all the hours I spent playing this with people… it boggles the mind.

Remember that damn blood dripping down the screen and the “duun-dun” noise.?

  9. badcat says:

    Two words: remote mines.

    • Wes says:

      Proximity were better =P

My friends and I still play this game, and the worn out 64 joysticks just add an extra challenge to it.

      • Nightroad says:

upsets me alot that new controllers are difficult, at best, to find. i hope they release it on the Wii’s virtual console. controlls might be a bit funny on a classic or GC controller, but it’d be better than not ever playing it again cause my controllers are pooched.

        • Chris says:

That may not happen. The game’s publisher, Rareware, is now owned by Microsoft. When Goldeneye 007 was published they were making games for both Sony and Nintendo, mostly Nintendo. With an epic win as big as Goldeneye I doubt that Microspft would let Nintendo have it. If it is re-released one day I could see in XBox live before Virtual Counsle.
Last I heard Nintendo was fighting to get the rights to re-release it.
Whomever gets it lets hope for online multiplayer matches!

      • Jeff says:

Yes, proximity mines in the Stacks. If you didn’t beat me up to the second level, you might as well have kissed your butt goodbye. Booby traps all over the place. >:D Muahahahahaha!

I used to play the multiplayer by myself to memorize the maps. That way when I actually got to play with other people, I knew where everything was located and could find out where they were just by briefly glancing at their screen. Such good times…

“GoldenEye 007 revolutionized First Person Shooters, Multiplayer gaming, and video games in general.”

That statement just made me vomit. Whoever wrote it should be put to death by firing squad.

    • :) says:

WORD! What made me vomit about that game was the frame rate or whatever it was. Play it for a while and you get all sweaty and nauseous. And the controls are way beyond retarded. There were so many better games when this turd came out.

  11. Ellie says:

HAH. We still own our N64 AND GoldenEye 007. I could go play it now if I wanted :3

    • charlie says:

so do i… i think im gonna go play it rite now… i just need to find some1 to play with.

on a sie note i remember one time i stayed up all night and played at the library on infinite. i think i beat him by around 400 kills… good times… good times…

      • TrevCorp says:

i have it too, but i also have gameshark, the cartrigde that has the cheats on it.
I pretty much play the story line with the cheats.
the only good cheat in multiplayer is paintball mode (i guess) because you can’t kill with invincibilty, invisibilty is too hard, and a lot of other reasons

  12. lolwyrm says:

That was 1997. Marathon came out in 1994, and looks basically the same, only with aliens. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Sh4YTyMhVc&feature=related
Only that was for Mac, not N64. Definitely behind.

  13. Doc says:

Sorry, DOOM set a standard for FPS for me. And zombie games. And space games. And general horror games.

I don’t think the game “Dead Space” (correct title? Never played it) would exist without DOOM.

  14. Mettan says:

Anyone who down-voted this deserves to be shot with the Golden Gun!

  15. Lachlan says:

THIS IS REMADE INTO A SOURCE MOD! WIN! goldeneyesource.net/

  16. zack says:

No honorable mention for the “Get Down” meme that started with the Goldeneye bug?

  17. Jane St.Clair says:

I still love this game. Hasn’t been a good Bond game since.

  18. Kimbalena says:

I still have this game and we play it often. The N64 is dying though…. so sad…. I need a new cable for the back.

  19. tyberius says:

Oh c’mon, revolutionized my arse. Duke Nukem 3D was better than this. And it came out like a year earlier. For me, that was the epic party game.

  20. Blue says:

I could never beat the Cradle level back then and not much has changed. The graphics were real good for a 90s game.

    • charlie says:

i got this game like a week after it came out and i couldnt beat the statue level until this winter…

im still trying to get the aztec level…

  21. Dnov says:

For people who remember this game, have a copy of Half-Life 2 on Steam, and want to play this with friends, or people from all over the world without being called a friggin screen watcher, you can download a mod free of charge (you just have to buy Half-Life 2) called Goldeneye: Source.

Brings me back every time I load it up.

  22. korn_spiracy says:

I remember the first time my brother and i played this, we played it so much when we stopped we could still see the walls moving

  23. Dave says:

In my opinion, best firstpersonshooter ever. Obviously games that have been released since and in the future are and will be better but nothing so far has lasted and caused such a buzz with my friends. I paid £80 for this on the day of it’s release. When someone mentions it my eyes light up and I wanna talk about it. Thing I loved most was that it could be played so either your left or right thumb could control the crosshair and the character could still be controlled as normal, well, almost. Best money I ever spent. Multiplayer Golden Gun who wants some!? :D

  24. Ma.Belle.Fleur says:

So did anyone else ever stick the proximity mines on the back of a soldier and then blow them up? hahahaha. that was about the most awesome part of the game. so fun.

  25. poco says:

This game is full of win and I played it plenty in college. Still, it’s hardly retro. It’s what, ten years old??

  26. Tsuki says:

Golden Eye was the only game we played on our N64 years later. XD Awesomeness.

  27. Kristen says:

My brother and I played it all the time when we were teenagers. I never beat the game unfortunately but he did. We’d play multiplayer. I think our weapon of choice was the moonraker (one of the worst Bond films, but awesome weapon because it didn’t require ammo!).

One of my favorite levels to redo over and over was the one on the ship. I would go to the front of the ship and shoot into the windows where some of the bad guys were, then run away and wait for them to come out. Then when I’d go inside the room, the bad guys would be gone and I’d look down outside and see three bad guys standing around, looking confused. Then I’d shoot them. Hehe.

  28. Anonymous says:

bbbbeeeeesssssssstttttttttt game ever omg omg iiiiiiiitttttt was iiiiiiiiiinnnnnnnnssssssaaaaaaaannnnne im happy this is on hear thank u thanks u for putting this!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

  29. Anonymous says:

Loved it when I was a kid! I wasn’t so good on first-person kind of game, so this is where I learned the ropes. Amazing game and a nostalgic WIN!!

  30. Javin says:

I can’t consider this one a “nostalgia” win. It’s too recent for me. You want to talk epic nostalgia, talk Wolfenstein, and later DOOM.

  31. Rottentreats says:

OH HELL YEAH! I played the crap outta this game in college. I was overjoyed to see this on this site. :D

  32. General Ourumov says:

What was the most fun for me, besides multiplayer matches, had to be my friends staring in awe as I played with one of those claw-shaped controllers in EACH HAND. They had no idea it could be done! And they never got as good at what came to be known among us as the “John Woo Controller Mode” as I was! ^_^

  33. Anonymous says:

Ah, so many drunken nights in college spent playing this. I still have my N64 hooked up- this is making me want to play. Invincible mode, all guns, and unlimited ammo, capping Natalya while the guard watches and does nothing. Good times.

  34. jake says:

complex with remote mines, throw then press a+b to detonate in midair, ultimate pwnage
