Being from north Texas, I not only recall my love for him from Saturday mornings, but also from his commercials for Braum’s (a burger/ice cream chain). So, to this day, every time I step into a Braum’s, I can’t help but think of him and my childhood.

jim & I both performed at the same coffeehouse in lexington, ky, in 1966-67. he was 15 and even then a gifted stand-up character comedian. very strange young man, but amazingly talented.

Jim Varney lived in White House, TN for the longest time, and he was super nice to all the kids. My college roommate grew up in his nieghborhood. She took me to meet him in ‘99, and he was cool as hell. Made us peanut-butter and honey sandwiches and talked with us for two hours. It was awesome to find out is was as nice in real life as he seemed to be in his shows and movies.

Rather decent Shakespearean actor best known for a very Un-Shakespearean character.
First Time I saw him was commercial on TV in Memphis, then his Natural Gas commercials about the time the Movies were about to start up.
His Jed Clampett was pretty good.

Earnest Saves Christmas was an annual tradition at our house. My dad liked the bit about “Pie-son snakes” and I liked how Santa got the entire cell-block to sing the 12 Days of Christmas.

It’s true, no one ever seemed to dislike Jim Varney himself. I read once that he and Robin Williams were good friends. Makes a lot of sense. ^_^

Yeah, overexposure was the source of the backlash, but Jim Varney had amazing comic chops. And every account I’ve ever heard from people working with him is that, off-screen, he was the most charming, generous, and all around good guy any of them ever me.

of course ernest got over-played in the 80’s, making people eventually hate the character, but there are real moments of genius in jim varney’s portrayal of ernest.
