Aww man I miss Ernest. My favorite was Ernest Scared Stupid. It was a little weird that he always hung out with kids though.. lol
I love Ernest, but was it just me or was “Ernest P. Worrell in 5 Seconds” actually 44 seconds?
MIAK! Mother’s MIAK!
YES! To this day, I still say that line…and no one ever knows what Im talking about.
Jim Varney lived in White House, TN for the longest time, and he was super nice to all the kids. My college roommate grew up in his nieghborhood. She took me to meet him in ‘99, and he was cool as hell. Made us peanut-butter and honey sandwiches and talked with us for two hours. It was awesome to find out is was as nice in real life as he seemed to be in his shows and movies.
Woo ! My submission !
OMG The Ernest Trauth Eggnog commericals were the best!
Holy cow, they’re not kidding about the “Ernest Goes to Camp” statement… I played the VHS so much, I nearly destroyed it. Thank God dvds came along. XD
VERN! HOW’S IT GOIN, VERN!
RIP Jim.:)
Allow me the dissenting vote: That dude & his shtick annoyed the hell out of me.
Good, I’m glad I’m not the only one. I never understood why he was so popular.
Aww, that’s too bad.
But you’re definitely not alone… Ernest was unfortunately one of those love/hate characters for a lot of people.
Yaknowwuddaimean?
of course ernest got over-played in the 80’s, making people eventually hate the character, but there are real moments of genius in jim varney’s portrayal of ernest.
Yeah, overexposure was the source of the backlash, but Jim Varney had amazing comic chops. And every account I’ve ever heard from people working with him is that, off-screen, he was the most charming, generous, and all around good guy any of them ever me.
It’s true, no one ever seemed to dislike Jim Varney himself. I read once that he and Robin Williams were good friends. Makes a lot of sense. ^_^
I miss Jim he was great at what he did
Earnest Saves Christmas was an annual tradition at our house. My dad liked the bit about “Pie-son snakes” and I liked how Santa got the entire cell-block to sing the 12 Days of Christmas.
Rather decent Shakespearean actor best known for a very Un-Shakespearean character.
First Time I saw him was commercial on TV in Memphis, then his Natural Gas commercials about the time the Movies were about to start up.
His Jed Clampett was pretty good.
jim & I both performed at the same coffeehouse in lexington, ky, in 1966-67. he was 15 and even then a gifted stand-up character comedian. very strange young man, but amazingly talented.
Why do you say he was strange?
Being from north Texas, I not only recall my love for him from Saturday mornings, but also from his commercials for Braum’s (a burger/ice cream chain). So, to this day, every time I step into a Braum’s, I can’t help but think of him and my childhood.

And I’m sad that they’re making a new Toy Story and he won’t be around to be the voice of Slinky Dog anymore.
Was it John L. Sullivan? Ernest was in the John L. Sullivan commercials?? I think. Haha. Now that’s the way to sell a car, know-whut-I-mean?
He used to do Oakhurst Milk ads in Maine.
I was watching Cheech & Chong’s ‘Nice Dreams’ – he’s the chicken punk in the looney bin – uncredited!
I remember him on Pee-Wee Herman (wasn’t that the show?) But hated his movies.
Holy crap, I had no idea he died in 2000!
“Hey Vern, can we talk?” I had a lot of laughs at his comedy! I did not know he passed away…..hate to hear that.
