Tex Avery was a frickin’ genius, and without him there wouldn’t have been guys like Bob Clampett, Bill Hanna and Joe Barbera, and don’t even think about forgetting Chuck Jones. Tex Avery was the fountainhead from which sprang the Golden Age of Cartoons.

Tex Avery’s stuff was a riot. My personal favorite had to be from TV of Tomorrow – the one with the built-in garbage disposal. I shudder to think if that worked with more than annoying commercials.

Red Hot Riding Hood makes Jessica Rabbit look overdressed, no?
He aimed his work more at adults, even after it became the norm for them to be toned down for the kiddies. He just learned to slide those jokes by the censors.

Just to clarify, Avery did not create Porky Pig and numerous other artists had their hands in making Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, and other classic cartoons into the characters we know today. None of which is to say that Avery doesn’t deserve tons of credit for his work and his lasting influence on animation. Without his groundbreaking explorations of exaggeration and timing, we probably wouldn’t have cartoons like “Ren and Stimpy,” “Spongebob Squarepants,” “Chowder,” and “This Misadventures of Flapjack.”
