Epic Win: The Budweiser Frogs

Submitted by Mitra A

The Budweiser Frogs really invented the Super Bowl commercial craze. Before them, there weren’t scores of hilarious commercials all made to catch your attention, and then along came a couple frogs. The following year, we got the lizards and then the ferrets.

Incorrect source or offensive?

  1. sopranomom says:

    BUD…

  2. Shade Tail says:

    Yet another commercial.

    *sigh*

Sure, funny and attention grabbing. The point being to manipulate us into buying their product.

    Major *LOSE*.

  3. Wyde says:

    Here’s a question:
Whatever happened to the Friday Fail? The only one I remember is the Furby, which everyone agrees with.

  4. catman says:

These were great but any one from Washington state knows these were a rip off of an old Ranier Beer commercial. They were making funy beer commercials long before Bud got the idea.

    • feckless says:

I remember when the Budweiser frogs came out we were all like, “Hey, didn’t Rainier already do that?”. Yes, yes they did.

      • outside food says:

Not to mention, the print adverts, such as posters in train stations, looked just like the art from the Caldecott Award-winning children’s book “Tuesday” (flying frogs!) that I’m sure came out earlier. It’s so long ago now, I don’t remember the exact timeline, but I *do* remember seeing the poster and thinking, “Hey, it’s that picture book! No, wait. WTF.” Only, back then, I guess I would have said the actual words.

  5. The Admiral says:

I HATED the Budweiser frogs, simply because of all the darned rednecky merchandise they spawned–things like toilet paper with a “butt-wipe-er” label. (I am a redneck, FYI, just one with a low tolerance for asinine junk.)

I can only say thank God the Taco Bell Chihuahua is too recent for inclusion. I couldn’t take both of ‘em.

  6. Nightlyeclipse says:

Was the Taster’s Choice couple before or after the Budweiser frogs?

  7. Nightlyeclipse says:

I loved the Budweiser frogs, but not for the beer, mainly just because I love frogs. LOL Still have a shirt with them on it though.

  8. Jon says:

My favorite was the one with the two lizards and the ferret singing “Take Me Out to the Ball Game”

  9. Mulch says:

I guess no one has ever heard of the Bud Bowl? hmmmmmm The frogs were the 90’s where as the Bud Bowl was the 80’s.

The Bud Bowl took place same time as the Super Bowl. Bud played against Bud lite. Bottles and cans. Was great to watch. ESPN when they were just starting out really got in to it.

  10. Zero says:

I remember these dumb commercials when I was little. Ah, but they were everywhere.
