Epic Win: Goodnight Moon

GoodnightMoon-738512

Submitted by Laura M

Goodnight Moon was an epic bedtime story. It taught us to say goodnight to all of the things we cared about, whether they be our family members, or stuff animals, or other inanimate objects in our room.

  1. Kimbalena says:

In my town, we have the little mouse from Goodnight Moon hidden all over our downtown area. You have to walk around looking for the little bronze statues, it always makes me smile. :-)

  2. CheekyCherry says:

Look! There’s Christopher Walken reading Goodnight Moon!

  3. Aust Naile says:

A spoof of this book was written and was entitled “Goodnight Bush.” The book made fun of all the things Bush did wrong during his terms as president.

  4. dahumanz says:

    I almost fell asleep
    (seriously)

  5. Gollum says:

One of the best things about this book is that the mouse is hiding out on every page. One of the best childrens books ever.

  6. Katie says:

We LOVED this book when ours were small — I read it and read it til I could recite it from memory (handy when we were traveling!) — and we found the mouse on every page, every single night.

I miss it — and I still have the book. Maybe I’ll be able to read it to my grandkids some day.

  7. Erin says:

The author graduated from my college. That always tickled me, I love her books!

  8. Ceridwen says:

I only know this from a scene in Playing By Heart, but it sounded beautiful… :)

  9. D.R. says:

I really did that– I said goodnight to everything in my room. I remember that it helped me when I was scared of the dark.

  10. Naoyusimi says:

But–but–”stuff animals”?? Come on, who’s running this site, again?

They are “stuffed” animals. Stuffed with . . . stuff.

  11. rawrlicious says:

My mom would always read this to me before bed. My favourite line was something about “Goodnight, brush. Goodnight mush”.

  12. Grimalken says:

The painting in the room reminded me of The Runaway Bunny. As much as I loved this book, and read it till the staples fell out, the hardcover Runaway Bunny was my favorite.

I demand me some Runaway Bunny!

  13. Bee says:

The runaway bunny is by the same author.
We love this book here! I read it to my little guy every night.

  14. CaliforniaDave says:

…and Berkeley Breathed ended the Opus comic with our beloved penguin hero going into this very book.

  15. sillywhiskers says:

No joke: I read this to my kid MOMENTS before I spotted this on Once Upon a Win. EPIC win indeed.

  16. Morna says:

Maybe I should get a copy and read it when I can’t sleep. Just seeing the cover reminds me how safe I felt when mom and dad tucked me in at night. Hubby snoring beside me just isn’t the same (though still comforting).

  17. Dea says:

I guess I’m the only one who hates this book – hated it as a kid, refused to read it to my kids. It’s just annoying….I prefer Dr. Seuss or Sandra Boynton any day…

    • Anonymous says:

You’re not the only one. I read while pregnant and thought it was crap then when I read it to my son he howled. He’s old enough now to choose his own stories and whenever he accidentally pulls it off the shelf he says “no mummy, put it in the trash.”

We’re big Boynton fans here. Actually listening to Pajama Time as I type, little bedtime ritual.

  18. CoCo says:

My teacher read the Spanish version of that book in my spanish class one day.

  19. Anonymous says:

Awesome piece of child psychology. Gently bore them to sleep. XD Mission accomplished.

  20. Pennyforth says:

I was going to show some love for “Nighty Night Toon”, the Animaniacs homage to “Goodnight Moon”, but the only version up on YouTube is in French. :(

  21. Tara says:

HATE this book! I was a nanny when I was in college and the little boy I took care of wanted me to read it constantly. It bored me to tears and I thought the text was really stupid. Never bought a copy for my son when he was little and I don’t think he missed out on anything. This book is tripe.

  22. asdf says:

Wow that was book that really scared me more than anything else at that time. I can even still remeber the exact smell of that book.
