Epic Win: The Golden Girls

Submitted by Amy A

The Golden Girls was an epic win for being able to be so hilarious, while also being socially poignant, interesting, and thought provoking. They frequently talked about things like sex, AIDs, homosexuality, etc., and they did it all while being four older ladies, which most people didn’t expect. There’s something just inherently funny about three old ladies standing around a department store talking about condoms.

  1. Mommybird says:

I’m gonna miss Bea Arthur, and I’m not the only one. I’m praying that Rue and Betty hang in there a few more years.

    • vi31 says:

      Ha! My submission!

I will be absolutely devistated when Betty leaves this earth. It’s hard enough watching Dorothy and Sophia sing “I Got You, Babe” without getting teary.

  2. Abbie says:

Any show with laugh tracks is epic fail. Laugh tracks ruin TV shows.

  3. Susie says:

I own every season of The Golden Girls. I love every one of them and that show makes me feel like the woman that I am! Nothing better than hanging out doing some girly craft while watching The Golden Girls.

  4. Sharmed says:

One of my favorite lines from that show is

“Fasten your seatbelt, slut puppy. This ain’t gonna be no cakewalk!”

Gosh, I love that show so much.

    • Nightlyeclipse says:

Pretty much all lines from Bea and Estelle get me every time. I watched this show as a kid (born in ‘80) and I catch EVERY rerun I come across now. I never get tired of them! Truly the most Epic of Wins! :)

  5. mamarosa says:

    FAIL!

This show is so appealing to old ladies, like my Aunt, and to the same audience who appreciates Menopause the Musical. *rolls eyes*

I like my comedy a bit drier.

*runs away to find a dose of good British comedy*

    • Chelsea says:

“Menopause The Musical” Oh you’re clever.

      *insert action here*

      • mamarosa says:

Please explain the ‘action’ to which you refer.
Is is a certain ‘action’ of a hand digit?
Let’s just be clear here, before the rebuttals.

        • Bridget says:

Not sure when 30 became old.

          • Anonymous says:

Lots of people ages 13-70+ enjoy this show – and I just might like Menopause the Musical, even though I’m 32. Not to mention I own Flying Circus and Fawlty Towers myself, so I know every bit of what good humo(u)r is.

    • TJ Douchemandzadeh says:

I don’t know. I used to rub out some knuckle children to this show. Damn you Rue McClanahan, you vile temptress. Quite.

  6. DancerInDC says:

I don’t want imagine a world without The Golden Girls. A vital WONDERFUL part of my life.

  7. Ignatz says:

Apparently Bea Arthur somehow got on the TSA No-Fly List a couple years ago. I can only imagine the dresing-down she gave the poor, hapless yutz who had to inform her that she couldn’t get on the plane.

Yes, this sreies was a definite WIN. Even the followup series with them running a hotel had some winning moments, if only for Don Cheadle and Cheech Marin.

  8. Jurassic Janet says:

I’m a baby from the 80’s (‘86 to be exact) and my mom used to watch this show when I was a toddler. In high school, reruns were shown at least 3 times a day on Lifetime and I was hooked. In college, I had a boyfriend who bought me one of the seasons on DVD when I was sick and he actually watched it with me. Just hearing the theme song brings a smile to my face. It’s almost as if Golden Girls is a security blanket or comfort food in TV form for me…it’s just always been a staple in my life.

My favorite line: “Uh, we’re collecting lingerie for needy sexy people!” (when Blanche and Rose come home from play practice in their habits/nun outfits and meet Uncle Angelo who was a priest at the time).

Love it. And now I’m done spilling my life story to a website. haha

  9. ascatal says:

a true classic, rest in peace Bea and Estelle

  10. Kimbalena says:

I’m only 24 and I’ve watching this show since I was a little baby! They’re hilarious, and never afraid to say what needs to be said. So I definitely disagree with the above post that said this show was for old ladies. It just must not be thier kind of comedy show, but it definitely IS mine!

  11. Steve says:

Definitely a funny show – the great chemistry and talent of the cast let them bring the scripts to life.

  12. The Admiral says:

All right, I’m REALLY disappointed at the number of thumbs down the Girls are getting. What gives, people? No sense of humor? Don’t like cheesecake? Neither did Bea Arthur.

    • Anonymous says:

Admiral – I’m sure it’s just guys who are too embarassed to admit even anonmously that they love the show.

  13. Ryan says:

    Deadpool approves.

  14. Shoopoftheday says:

I think Golden Girls is a pretty golden idea, eh? Eh?

  15. Tboz says:

Golden Girls was/is a great show that brought a lot of laughs! I watched the show when it aired & now whenvever I see a rerun, I enjoy another dose of GG! My husband teases me about watching it–if he’s flicking the channels & runs across the GG, he says “There’s mommer’s show” & just puts the remote down! But he doesn’t watch it-says it’s alright but he just doesn’t care for it.

  16. Rebeccagrace says:

One of my favorite shows ever. I have all the seasons on DVD but I still watch on the Hallmark channel and WEtv every time it’s on. Just having them on in the background makes me feel happy. I’ve probably seen every episode 50 times and they still never get old for me!

  17. amyrenee2413 says:

Thank you :) I just spent the past 4 hours watching Golden Girls clips and stuff on youtube! :D

  18. Razor says:

I remember watching the clip about the price check! I think Rose (or was it Sophia?) ended up with the “extra large in black” ones. I remember ROFLing big time back in the day!
