one thumbs up is an epic win now?
Chicken sucks! Meat is murder. Thumbs down.
Thumbs up just to counter this.
Meat is murder. Delicious, delicious murder.
Just bought a new grill tonight. I think we are having chicken.
New grill, that calls for steaks!
Mmm, cow meat.
Just the sight of that lumpy sauce avalanching into the bowl instantly reminds me of Taco Town.
looks good… i wonder if people still sell it.
Me too, I haven’t seen it in years. It was a both-over-worked-parents-raising-two-preteen-boys-that-ate-it-was-their-last-meal-ever lifesaver
Unfortunately, it’s not available in the US anymore (not sure about overseas). My favorite was the “Country French” flavor, white sauce w/veggies. The marinara was decent, too. Stuff was awesome in a crock-pot, too!
They still sell it in Europe and the UK — every time I see it on the shelf here, I have to fight the urge to flap my elbows and hum the jingle.
OMG I miss Chicken Tonight! They don’t sell it in the states anymore. I had the sweet and sour chicken once a week as a kid….*DROOL*
TOTALLY EPIC WIN. I loved this stuff. I forget which one my mom always go, it was one of the white sauces… she’d make it with chicken and rice and it was the best thing ever. We tried a few times to copy-cat it, but we never could. I would die for this again!!!
All commercials are automatic lose. Period. Trying to manipulate people into buying things they don’t really need or want is a big lose.
You’re missing the point.
No I’m not.
yes. yes you are
No. No I’m not.
OK, you’re getting the point of commercials. They are made to sell you stuff.
But you’re missing the point of why this commercial made OUAW dot com…. Because in the mid to late eighties, commercials for this product were on CONSTANTLY.
Yes, I was born in the 70’s, so I remember that perfectly well. But merely being ubiquitous 20 or 30 years ago doesn’t make something a win. It has to be extra cool to qualify as a nostalgic win, and for me, commercials don’t make the grade.
I get it that some commercials were so good at making people want whatever they were peddling that people actually get nostalgic for their jingles or stupid dances or whatever. It is still a lose rather than a win, because it is nothing but entertainment twisted to serve someone’s greed.
But some commercials (not necessarily this one) can still be epic wins.
I loved Chicken Tonight! I wish they still sold it here. Raising four boys on a tight grocery budget is complicated. I’d love more easy meals like this. We’re getting a little tired of Hamburger Helper around here.
My brothers and I used to sing the song from the commercial all the time. We’d even get the arms going. lol
They still have this in Australia! We rule! Although we lost Pop Tarts a while ago
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fl3GC6bxmWE – NSFW but LOLS!!
OMG! My friend and I started singing this last week! Ha ha… we kept meaning to youtube-it. I’ll have to send this to her. I remember doing a skit about the song in day camp when I was like 8 or 9!
Oh by the way, for a good laugh, check out “Iguana Tonight” on youtube. The only copy they have is crap quality, but you’ll get the idea.
This stuff was excellent! We loved all the flavors. Then it disappeared. Totally left us hangin’ ’cause we loved it so much. Moral of the story: Don’t ever like a particular food or local restaurant too much, they’ll probably go away.
Chicken Tonite, Flaky Flix, Magic Pan Restaurant, The Monk’s Retreat (restaurant), and so many others.
I was in a Chicken Tonight commercial when I was 17… all I got was a hamper of free chicken sauces, which my family hated, and a free ‘Chicken Tonight Tour’ t-shirt.
happy days….
We had this stuff in college. Several times our group (5 guys, 1 girl) would decide to cook at someone’s off-campus appartment, and Chicken Tonight was great for those who didn’t quite have all the culinary skills and still wanted something reasonably home-cooked. My mother never taught me to cook, so I felt very proud to pull together Sweet and Sour Chicken with rice and have the guys eat it happily.
am I the only one who notices Barney’s the anouncer.
Haha, I sang this song once when we were having chicken. My husband didn’t even know what I was talking about!
They made a reference to these commercials on The Simpsons once- that segment is not going to age well.
I’ve seen this commercial so many times that the song randomly pops into my head. I used to dance like a fool when it came on or when my mom would ask “What do you want for dinner tonight. lol great stuff
This song pops into my head randomly, too! And of course, when people ask me what I want for dinner, I do sometimes get the urge to sing, I feel like chicken tonight! Great jingle.
