Epic Win: The Nightmare Before Christmas

Submitted by Hannah S

Jack Skellington and the rest of Halloween Town were an incredible dream that brought so much joy and happiness to so many of us. Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas was way ahead of its time in almost every aspect, from the animation style to the musical styling and plot.

  1. PPG says:

    I officially feel old.

And I loooove this movie! It was my daughter’s first movie that she would request, except she would just ask for ‘Jack’.

    • Sharmed says:

Haha, I feel old, too. I don’t have any kids, but if I do, you better bet this will be on their top 5. My husband and I have like three different copies of it, for some reason or another.

    • Sharmed says:

As an added side note, my husband is going to get a Nightmare tattoo. I think he said he wanted it from ankle to knee, or something.

      • Nightlyeclipse says:

I feel old too. I saw this in the theater when it first came out and instantly fell in love with it! I went right out and bought the soundtrack and still listen to it. My kids and I watch this movie together now.

  2. boaks says:

Tim Burton = epic win, indeed

    • Klouise says:

A friend of mine was the co-director on this… For some reason hes never mentioned as much as Tim Burton… Hmm

      • barboid says:

That’s probably because he’s not as controversial as Tim Burton is. But your friend has been involved in lots of other things, right?

    • Rose says:

Extremely epic win! Love this movie!!! Funnily enough, it’s soething mom and I both love, and something we can both count on the merch being perfect gifts for each other. Kinda sad but so true.

  3. varuna says:

I LOVED this movie when it first came out on VHS. My favorite element in the movie was (were?) the trees with holiday doors on them. It was so intensely mystical and wondrous for me. lol :D

  4. Ceridwen says:

This movie is made of absolute, perfect WIN. A story by Tim Burton, music by Danny Elfman and directed by the stop-motion genius of Mr Henry Selick – does it get any better, I ask you?

    • Pepper says:

      Stars Johnny Depp?:)

      • Ceridwen says:

        Lol :D
You’re right, that’s the only thing missing. Seems we can’t get Burton, Elfman, Depp AND Selick all at once, but three out of four twice (Corpse Bride) isn’t bad either. ;)

        • boaks says:

Twice! Charlie & the Chocolate Factory!

          • Ceridwen says:

Oh my god, you’re right! How could I forget Charlie?

I’m getting old. My brain is apparently leaking.

            That makes thrice then! ;)
(Upside of getting old: you know all the weird words!)

        • Zoreta says:

Edward Scissorhands, Sleepy Hollow and several others movies of Burton’s have all three…

  5. Miroku says:

I don’t feel this is a nostalgic win for me.

The movie was alright, but the fans, and merchandise it spawned….

    Yeah….

    • Casa says:

I like dark humor, but never realy cared for this movie…. or corpse Bride… or Coraline. One of my buddies loves these things for some reasion, so I’ve been subjected to them more times than I’d care to count.

Then there is all the hype, wich is SUCH a turn off.

      • Who says:

This is really irritating me, why do people keep bringing up Coralline. Yes they used the stop motion style, but it has nothing to do with Nightmare. Pee-Wee’s Big Adventure has stop motion in it, so did James and the Giant Peach, that doesn’t means they are similar in any way.
Corpse Bride I admit wasn’t as good as Nightmare, and was supposed to be similar, but I wish people would stop grouping these together.
And for those people who aren’t obsessed with the film Tim Burton is doing, he didn’t have anything to do with Coralline, and and has only one stop motion project under way that I’m aware of.

        • Ceridwen says:

“Yes they used the stop motion style, but it has nothing to do with Nightmare. Pee-Wee’s Big Adventure has stop motion in it, so did James and the Giant Peach, that doesn’t means they are similar in any way.”
Um, yes they are – at least two of them: Nightmare before Christmas, James and the Giant Peach and Coraline were all directed by Henry Selick.

        • Casa says:

That’s another one I don’t care for… James and The Giant Peach.
These films get smashed together, not because they use the same medium, but because they have a very similar artistic style and mood. A mood and style that I persionaly find to be cheap, trite and unappealing.

        • FwaFwa says:

OH MY GOD James and the Giant Peach. Why on earth isn’t this another Win? I remember hating on the evil aunts and freaking at the skeleton pirate ship bits. And impaling a real peach on my mom’s plastic model of the Empire State building afterwards :D

  6. Anon says:

The movie had one unfortunate fail. The guy cast for Jack’s voice… couldn’t sing to save his life. So all those great Jack Skellington songs were sung by Danny Elfman, who swore he’d never sing in a movie again. Then he voiced Bonejangles in Corpse Bride.

  7. Rae says:

This movie -is- made of win regardless of the Hot Topic (and other guilty parties!) merchandising. My family owned this movie when it first came out, in 1993 when I was FOUR. I’ve loved it since as long as I can remember and I always will! Though, I will say that it’s odd Disney sent it over to Touchstone studios but at the Villains in Vogue shop at Walt Disney World there’s Nightmare merchandise. Unless I’m misinformed Touchstone studios is part of Disney, which would explain the transfer.

    • sassiwolf7 says:

What’s great was the movie, I still love watching it to this day but I find it funny to Goths pick it out. I guess that it is ‘dark’ in a way but it’s always been a kids movie and frankly I don’t think it’s really that dark, just different than the Disney Princesses that most little girls loved.

Still all the crap merchandising can’t deter from the fact that The Nightmare Before Christmas is a classic not to be repeated again.

    • LESLIE says:

actualy i LOVE the merchandise. im sick to death of all the sparkly pink frilly princess crap for girls. its nice to have some goth influence stuff that easy to get.

  8. hawk says:

I have love this movie since I went to see it for my 9th birthday. I use to be so upset about HotTopic and Disney for whoring out the merchandise but in the end it just gives me more NBC stuff. I will forever love this movie and hope when I have kids they will treasure it as well. I am also thinking of having a tattoo of Jack when he’s lying down on the angel in the cemetery, my favorite seen and song from the movie.

  9. Kinseth says:

I know all of the songs by heart. Without the music…

    • X-Mr-Skellington-X says:

Same Here, infact I know the whole movie by heart!

      • BlueDude says:

Yes! Me too. Just today my friend asked “Whats this?” and I broke into song :)

        • Code says:

I know the biggest part of the lyrics.
I may be not very old (only 20) but Me and my friends agree that this is the best movie. And, yeah, I often have to bite my tongue not to sing.
But sometimes someone says “You’re joking…” and at least 2 of us continue with “… You’re Joking, I can’t believe my eyes…” etc.

And sometimes I just randomly start humming “This is Halloween”. We even did that while we were waiting for the bus. We started singing, impersonating all voices that would appear… just for fun.

No Doubt about it: EPIC Win

  10. BitchFlakes says:

It’s about damned time… this should have been on here a long time ago!

  11. yoake135 says:

I AM THE MONSTER HIDING UNDER YOUR BED, TEETH GROUND SHARP AND EYES GLOWING RED!!!! XD lol best ever

    • sassiwolf7 says:

I had made up camp stories with that description before I realized that I got it from watching this movie so many times that it stuck with me.

    • Rin says:

I had that as my DeviantArt signature for a while. XD I changed it though. :(

  12. LESLIE says:

just proof that tim burtun is a friggin genius!

  13. utaduta says:

i remember going to see this with by boyfriend( named jack!) it was right before halloween. it was raining when we went in, on the way out it had turned to snow! we said that we lived in halloween town! :) ahh sweet memories! my 4 year old loves this movie i got the delux edition this year for her and she watches it all the time.

  14. BrightEyes says:

This movie came out the year my husband and I started dating, and we still go see it every time it comes back out into the theaters. The 3-D releases were extremely cool. And even though we have it on DVD I still watch it when it’s on television (like it was a couple of days ago!).

My dearest friend, if you don’t mind
I’d like to join you by your side
Where we can gaze into the stars
And sit together, now and forever
For it is plain as anyone can see
    We’re simply meant to be…

  15. Krepta says:

No argument here. The only aspect of this movie that was not epic win was that it was such a hard act to follow!

James & The Giant Peach? Okay-ish, but trying to catch epic win in a bottle again by adding a scene with Jack as a pirate kind of diluted the epic win of the book itself.

Monkeybone? Ouch. You could tell they were grasping at straws.

Corpse Bride? Definitely had its moments, but it really felt like a ‘back to the well’ for Nightmare rather than its own movie.

Coraline? Ahh, Coraline… sweet, sweet Coraline… whatever the equivalent of Epic Win is for the blogs of fifteen years in the future, you will be there, proudly, triumphantly.

  16. X-Mr-Skellington-X says:

Im freakin obsessed with this movie! I have all the figures, all the posters, the pillows and stuffed stuff, statues, pins, decorations, sweatshirts, salt and pepper shakers, lamp, bed spread, and more! I watch it every day! If you every find someone more obsessed with it then me goodluck You will search for your WHOLE LIFE! I named my dogs Jack and Sally, and my moms doctors name is Dr.Finklestein xD ! I <3 NBC

  17. musicalchef says:

Is this old enough to be a “nostalgic win??” If so, then I’m old…

  18. Frank says:

If you EVER get the opportunity, see this movie in 3D. Sure, it may not have any of those “in-your-face” effects, but you’ll find that it beats watching it normally (IMO).

This is still a great movie either way.

  19. barboid says:

It’s about time this movie came up! Love it! Saw with my kids and my daughter just LOOOVes it! The details, the talent, *happy sigh* this movie is so much full of win!

  20. moi says:

man oh man i’m old….i remember being little and my parents declaring that i was not allowed to see this movie. they thought i would have nightmares from it….BUT my grandma busted out this vhs along with home made sundaes and we watched it together one weekend. yet another reason why grandmothers rock.

  21. Gorp says:

    Ahhh, such a brilliant film!
I remember watching this when i was about 4 or 5 and loving it to pieces!
the onyl thing is now i get sick of it, not the film, the film still rocks, but all the merchendise thats really just appeared out of nowhere the past couple years.
Even worse you get loads of emo and scene kids wearing all this jack skellington clothign and stuff, but they wernt even born when the film was made, it angers me somewhat, they shouldnt be allowed to think its awesome!
its for us oldies to enjoy, not them! :(
    (lol)

    • 42 says:

Hey, don’t diss the kids who love this movie. Only diss the kids emo ones who love this movie. They’re a discrace to Nightmare fans everywhere. But if the younger generation is smart enough to like this movie too, let them. Then maybe they might turn out better.

  22. MK says:

I still love this movie! I listen to the songs all the time, my favorites are This is Halloween and Oogie Boogie’s Song.

I kinda hate how emo kids ruined the movie for me, though, because they have so much jewelry and shirts of it. Same thing with Invader Zim.

Tim Burton and Henry Selick kick ass!

  23. Melissa says:

I remember seeing commercials for this before it came out to theater and how excited I was to see it when it was finally in theaters. My sisters and i LOVED this film, and went through a couple VHS watching it so many times. It came out in 93 right? I was 10. =)

Enough already with the damn merchandise though, lol. It was a great movie, one of the best for me anyways, but damn! Salt and pepper shakers? All the merchandise garbage is truly a disservice to the film. Crazy kids and their stuff that Hot Topic tells you to buy….

  24. i-swoon-for-thee says:

i was waiting for some1 2 post this!!i saw it yesterday and it rocked my socks off i love it!!!!!!

  25. BrightEyes says:

Another “win” from this movie – watching some movie trailer or commercial and hearing “What’s This?” playing in the background…

  26. Kim says:

I sadly didn’t see this movie until I was about 20 or so. I always heard of it, but somehow never got to see it. Well, that changed! Now every year I watch it at LEAST at Halloween AND Christmas! Such a fantastic movie and the very first purchase I made from iTunes was this soundtrack!

    • Kim says:

Also forgot to mention that the only thing I dislike about the movie is that the narrator isn’t Patrick Stewart, like it is on the soundtrack.

  27. Ashley says:

I have to say that when I saw TNBC on here, i almost screamed/cried/threw a party. This is one of my favorite movies of all time. I’m so happy to see it on here!

  28. Jess says:

My parents rented this for me on VHS when I was 4 or 5. I’ve been hooked since. We got the DVD, and I watch it all the time. I can sing most every song from heart. I even find myself humming them while cleaning from time to time.

  29. Kelly says:

Forget christmas presents, relatives, special outings, first day of school–
My earliest memory in life was this movie. Even now as a teenager I can’t stop loving it. There are only two kinds of people in the world: Those who love Nightmare and those who haven’t seen it yet.

  30. 42 says:

ah. i feel as if it was only yestarday that i fist watched this movie, an i know i’ll love it to the grave. i just uploaded the soundtrack to iTunes today then saw this. can’t wait for christmas now.

  31. Kaye says:

I LOVE Nightmare! It has been my favorite movie since i was a little girl!

  32. dragonbeatle57 says:

OMGGG!!! III LOVE IT!! it’s , it’s,.. JUST TOOO AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! much better than twilight.

  33. dragonbeatle57 says:

also, tim burton is the best!

  34. Sarhii says:

This has to be in my top 5 favorite movies of all time. It’s epic all around. My one and a half year old loves watching “Jack!”

  35. Meow says:

I liked this movie the first 5847548 times I was forced to see it.
I got so tired of, it’s one of the main reasons why I don’t like Tim Burton.
