Epic Win: Garfield and Friends

Submitted by Anneke M

With the invent of Garfield without Garfield it’s become popular to hate on Garfield, but Garfield and Friends was actually pretty funny. There was Orson the Pig, Bo the sheep and his three dimwitted brothers, Wade the Duck and Booker and Sheldon the chick and the unhatched egg. Not to mention there was also Screaming with Binky segment that usually intersected the episode.

    Wait, what about Lanolin?

  2. Stick says:

    Yep, Garfield and Daria

    • Nightlyeclipse says:

Watched this every Saturday with my brothers while eating Cheerios and milk. I’ve also read all the books and I read (and sometimes save) the comic in the paper. I also agree with the reason for learning sarcasm. Garfield taught me a great deal about it.

  3. zippycat says:

    No.

    Just. No.

The comics in the paper? The books? Yes.

    The show? No.

  4. armanrules says:

Garfeild? this should be on failblog.

  5. devilwoman says:

i like how garfield is the first thing on the page and the ad at the very top is for lasagna

  6. sprent2922 says:

you know what really weird? Lorenzo Music, The voice of Garfield was also the voice of Peter Venkman on the real ghostbusters. Who was played by bill murray in the movie who ended up voicing Garfield in the movie. OK Movie geek out.

    • Basara549 says:

If I remember correctly, Lorenzo was cast for Garfield because he sounded like Bill Murray in the TV series (because Garfield has many of the same attributes as Murray’s characters of the 80s).

Then, Lorenzo was to have done the movie, but passed away, and they approached and hired Murray because he sounded so much like his own sound-alike!

For that matter, The Real Ghostbusters (before it jumped the shark with the “Slimer and…” era) was a Win all its own, with several great writers willing to write on a level far above that of normal kids’ shows. The creator of Babylom 5 wrote many episodes, and another writer wrote gems like “The Cokkect Call of Cthulhu”…

  7. vi31 says:

Oh, this show was awesome! I’ve always been a Garfield fan, and this show was on for me all during high school. Love the Beethoven in the background of that clip.

  8. Vagrarian says:

It was actually a halfway smart show for Saturday mornings. I didn’t watch it except for every once in a great while, but I’ll always remember one show where the Binky the Clown show got cancelled. They had Binky waiting to see his boss, and at one point the boss hits the intercom and said, “Miss Sondheim? Send in the clown.” I roared with laughter at that, a joke that will sail over the heads of the kids and half the adults.

    • vi31 says:

V – I don’t remember that clip, but that is funny. Naming a secretary Soundheim. How very Monty Python!

  9. NaughtyMoose says:

I actually thought that this show sucked.. big time. Garfield the comic was awesome! Sarcastic and intelligent&funny strips. The show on the other hand was stupid and childish.

  10. Pennyforth says:

Win for the show, but Fail for whoever decided to put up the *second* opening for Garfield and Friends. The original opening, with a better song and animation tailor-made for the opening, is far better and funnier than a “party” song running over episode clips. Try this one (starts at 3:59 on the video):

  11. tom_zeke says:

I was about seven when this show debuted. I thought it was the greatest show I had ever seen. I lived in fear of missing an episode. Sure, in retrospect, it wasn’t the greatest, but I tend to judge the win of these things from how I felt about them back in the day, as opposed to how I view them as a critical, jaded adult. Like the A-Team. I watch epidsodes now, and they suck. But when I was a kid, they rocked!

  12. Anneke M says:

Actually, the theme song for the opening credits changed pretty frequently – there are quite a few different openings available on YouTube. The party song was always my favorite, though. :)

I remember the “Friends” episodes with the barnyard characters as being the funniest of all.

Also, as a random aside, the nostalgia win that I nominated made it to the front page on my birthday. :) I find it a fun little fluke.

  13. ICanHasAnne says:

Maybe not the very best thing ever, but far superior to most of the garbage on TV these days and therefore a win in my book. I can still sing the theme song. “Come on in, it’s time to party with Garfield and Friends!”

  14. Superman64 says:

here’s hoping you made lots of spaghetti

  15. Lucy says:

I used to watch this on and off when I was little. The episode I always remember is the one where he tries to escape Monday by going to Samoa. And of course the classic:
    Gorsh is Samoan for Splut!

Best sat morning cartoon made in my life time
one of the top 3 of all time

  17. shadowdancer21b says:

Lorenzo Music was awesome as the voice of Garfield. I can understand the appeal of Bill Murray, but I was truly disappointed to not see Lorenzo Music in the films, then I didn’t feel so bad after sitting through that tripe. I’m glad Lorenzo didn’t sully his career with that.

    • KelRen says:

I agree Pennyforth, the original opening was MUCH better. I remember being disappointed as a kid when they changed it.

      Thanks for posting it!

  19. NDW says:

    Lorenzo Music FTW!

  20. Kelly says:

My favorite cartoon as a kid. But I hated the ‘and Friends’ episodes.
