Epic Win: The Outsiders

Submitted by Tori

The Outsiders is such a classic troubled youth film. Who knew that the film was inspired by a middle school class that wrote Francis Ford Coppola asking that he make the movie.
Not only was it an awesome novel and movie, but The Outsiders broke out so many big stars – Matt Dillon, Ralph Macchio, Patrick Swayze, Rob Lowe, Emilio Estevez, Tom Cruise, and Leif Garrett, to name a few.

  1. Fishstick says:

It really did have so many new young stars!

And coincidentally, so many -troubled- young stars.

Sadly, most of them haven’t grown out of it. Guess they didn’t learn from the story they portrayed?

  2. Brandon_ha says:

Still one of my favourite books, I read it like 4 times in grade school.

  3. Daisy says:

    stay gold, ponyboy!

  4. Hannah says:

I had HUGE crushes on all of them in that movie! Especially Ralph Macchio and Matt Dillon. My walls were plastered with pages from all of the teen magazines with the pictures of them.
    I was a little obsessive.

  5. Stick says:

When I was a kid I wanted to be in a “gang” thanks to The Outsiders, Westside Story, and The Warriors. A couple of us kids even tried to start a little group witch is hilarious in a whitebread NJ suburb.

  6. shillaqueen says:

Sorry, I can’t get excited by any film with Tom Cruise in it.

  7. Casa says:

Damn this movie was so depressing… I got stuck watching it for some class in high school, having no idea what to expect, and then it’s like “oh ya, lets kill off a few main characters.” what.the.hell?!

  8. Melissa says:

This book was great, I loved the Outsiders! I read this a few times, and I only saw the movie once.

Funny cause I had to read it in 5th grade, and the week we finally finished the book and were going to be treated to watching the movie in class, I got the chicken pox. But during that week when I was sick at home in bed, I happened to run across the movie on some tv station, hehe. So I was glad i still got to watch it.

    • Jess says:

Loved The Outsiders, both the book and the movie. But….then again….I’m one of those people who watch sad movies and tv shows solely to make myself cry. My husband asks me why I watch Extreme Makeover: Home Edition if all I do is end up crying. Well….it’s just good stuff! Loved Ralph Macchio in the flick too, what a great breakout movie for him.

  9. Anon says:

That used to be my all-time favorite novel! Sadly, the fandom for it is freaking fangirl-crazy.

  10. panda says:

    hated it, actually :/

    • chaos says:

I hated it too, mostly because it was a “core” book for three years throughout my school career. There’s only so many times you can read the same depressing material before it gets old.

  11. Emma says:

I read that in 8th grade, and kept thinking of my two pet turtles. The smaller one’s all timid afraid of everything and bad stuff tends to happen to him. The big one’s a badass turtle that sometimes picks on the little one, but normally they get along, and they are adorable turtles.

You can imagine how sad this book/movie made me.

  12. Chelsea says:

Loved the book, hated the movie. The characters were perfect but the script was not. Oh, well. Still a classic.

  13. Rhiannercakes says:

I remember reading this in like grade 7 or 8.
It’s a must have in English class, in my opinion.
Too bad they’re replacing all these good books with… not so average ones.

  14. Hello, computer says:

Leif Garrett was already a 70’s teen idol before this movie, so technically it didn’t break him out. The rest of the stars, yeah.

I watched this movie so many times as a kid, I can recite the whole thing. I still love it, own it, and still watch it from time to time. I never got tired of it.

Oh, and Matt Dillon = NOM!

  15. Psycholadeh says:

I remember having to read the book for class; and I loved it, the movie however pisses me off.

  16. Brittany says:

I remember watching this movie about a million times growing up…it was my older sisters favorite movie and so since she was older then me we had to watch it all the time (lol)…I soon fell in love with it and it became one of my favorites as well!

  17. rawrlicious says:

Yay for The Outsiders! :) What a good choice.

  18. boxermom1004 says:

I used to watch this every day when I came home from school for at least 6 months straight – wore the tape clean out. I love it so much! I recently rented the re-released version and it sux hardcore. They added a bunch of dumb songs (because they couldn’t afford them the first time around) and a few small scenes that don’t make it any better. Some of the songs they added are so obnoxious and loud that you can’t even hear the dialogue over them. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it, yo! The original is the bomb. Strangely, I’ve never read the book! I must do that.

  19. G says:

Man, I was really teary at the end when Johnny was narrating the letter to Pony. I loved the book, and I cried ALOT more in the book than the movie.

  20. scottagecheese says:

My sister once went on a date with Matt Dillion. Oh, if it were only in his Outsider days…

  21. S. Wagner says:

My 8th grade English teacher started reading this book out loud to us in class but never got to finish it. I was hooked on it so I bought a copy so I could read the ending. I have had several copies of it over the years and have read it several times. I also enjoyed the movie, though the actors they chose were not the way I pictured them from the book I became comfortable with them and really liked it. I was really surprised to find out it was written by a sixteen year old girl!

  22. Andre 3000 says:

I hated this book and movie.
