Epic Win: Time to Make the Donuts
Submitted by Tamara K
The Dunkin’ Donuts commercials of the ’80s wouldn’t be what they were without Fred the Baker and Time to Make the Donuts was one of the most memorable of them all. Everyone hates getting out of bed so early in the morning so we could all empathize with our favorite funny commercial man, Michael Vale.

Definite Nostalgic win, since Dunkin Donut’s hasn’t had a fresh doughnut since the 80’s.
Tip: the commercial is correct.
Go at the ungodly hour of 3-5 am, and you’ll get the fresh donuts.
At least where I am.
Don’t bother if the trays are almost empty.
back in the day my sister worked there. when they actualy made the donuts at the store! my friends parents owned the franchise in our town and we would go and wait for fresh hot donuts to be made. also my anoying father who worked 3rd shift for a while would wake us up for school by turning on our lights and yelling ” time to make the donuts!” dork!
I think that might be a dad thing… mine did that too!
Yup so did mine!
I wish they made the variety they used to have when they concentrated on donuts.
The best “Time to make the donuts” ad was when the baker dressed in drag, holding a finger over his mustache, to check out the competition.
I soooo remember that ad!!! I loved it!!!
i work for dunkins and if one more person says time to make the donuts to me theyre gonna get it lol
I grew up in San Diego, where I think there might have been one Dunkin’ Donuts; I don’t think they bothered to advertise there. At the time Winchell’s had a stranglehold on the entire state’s donut-buying public.
Now I live in Fresno, which has no Dunkin’ Donutses or Winchellses at all– every donut shop in the city is a mom-and-pop operation, which is kind of neat. We used to have Krispy Kreme, but they pulled out, sigh.
I was born, grew up and live in the Bay Area in northern CA. We had ONE Dunkin’ Donuts, maybe two. We were hooked–they were better than Krispy Kreme’s. But they left this area years ago. Just like Winchell’s before them. *sigh* I looked it up on the internet once, they weren’t even making donuts anymore. stoopy people.
One of the best euphemisms for going out to kick ass on guitar, via Zakk Wylde:
Time to make the motherf*&^in’ donuts!
If you want fresh Dunkin’ Donuts, you’ll have to go *early* to one of the bigger, more isolated stores. Smaller stores in densely DD-populated areas tend to only carry donuts, pastries, and muffins shipped in daily from other, bigger stores. I learned this when I brought a “Buy a dozen donuts for the price of six” coupon to a newly-opened Mini-Dunkies that was running a promotion — and they had run out of donuts by Noon. Crazy.
That said, Coffee Coolattas may be the greatest thing in the world. The real find is a Dunkin’/Baskin’ combination store, as they will give you a Coolatta with ice cream mixed in.
“You know, for fifteen years, it’s been ‘Time to make the doughnuts.’ And, now.. it’s time to die.”
Even Saturday Night Live got in on the action.
When this commercial came out I was working at Smitty bakery in Scottsdale. When it was time for me to go home after hanging out with my friends, they would always yell “Time to make the doughnuts”. What a way to make a person feel like a dork. I do miss the fresh bakery goods.
Dunkin Donuts in AZ are terrible now. Only go when I’m desperate for pure sugar and too lazy to walk into a grocery store.
