Epic Win: MASH: Mansion-Apartment-Shack-House

Submitted and written by Kacie H
Remember playing this game with your friends to predict what your life would be like when you grew up? If you’re like me, you wouldn’t leave anything out – who you’ll marry, cars you’ll have, where you’ll live, job, # of kids, maid of honor in my wedding, the wedding colors, where we would go on our honeymoon and so on… the possibilities were endless. I must have played this a 1000 times on the bus to school.

My friends and I had an epic MASH format. It had like 100 things to fill out.
We did too! We kept adding to it until it got hard to fit on just one page! I played this game all the time. I think ours was M.A.T.C.H. (Mansion, Apartment, Trailer, Castle, House.)
My friends & I had a pretty big one too….it went on for pages!!
It was sooooo much fun!
Sry, never heard of this. Old, I guess.
What is the diagram with the 6 for?
How do you play this game?
Pretty much, the game determines your future. M.A.S.H. stands for Mansion, Apartment, Shack, House. Then you make categories like the ones you see there like Husband, Your Job, His Job, Salary, or pretty much anything you want. You make about five-six options, and then start doing a spiral like you see there. The person you’ve made the board for (because you never do your OWN M.A.S.H.), tells you when to stop. Then you count the number of lines and you start at the beginning and count to that number and cross out whatever it lands on. In that way you whittle it all down till you get one left in each column. Then is your future determined, and you can all giggle about it.
Well put
My friends and I had an epic game of this a month ago…but we played it as MARSH, Mansion, Apartment, Ranch, Shack, House
Looking at that example, it makes me wonder if that isn’t how Hollywood comes up with some of their romantic comedy plots.
A very good point, and I can’t agree more.
my friends and i had the mid-epic game…car color, how many kids…
this made me smile today, thanks
after the post about the fortune game i thought of this too! i loved to do this with my friends. i always got a shack or something! ha!
I know, me too. I sent it in but someone thought ahead of me. Just goes to show you what a win it is.
We played this too but we didn’t call it MASH. We picked the places to live differently: Why would we limit it to MASH when we could put “trailer park” or “homeless in a box somwhere” on there?
I totally remember that game! We called it something else I think, but it was the very same thing..
We didn’t use the spiral.
There were lists for each catagory House, Husband, Kids… ect.
The person running the mash would have you pick a randome number 1-however many choices that catagory had.
Whatever number you picked got you that
I actualy FOUND my old EPIC Mash Master Sheet, it had a dozen catagorys some with as many as tweanty choices!!! And yes… I dutifuly wrote a string of randome numbers to see what I got. ^^
We always played it where you would be able to come up with two or three of the options, but at least two were chosen by your friends. That way there were always a few bad things. Like for the boys list, you would choose like your crush and Zach Hanson, and then your friends would choose the kid who sits behind you and picks his nose and Pee Wee Herman. ‘Cause if it was ALL good things, it wasn’t that fun!
we also had the C.A.S.H. format. same as this one just the “C” stood for “Castle”. why have a mansion when you could ghave a castle right?
I remember similar games, but ours weren’t exactly like this. I might do this at college on Monday for a laugh
We played so that every topic (and yes, those topics were pretty extensive. We often had type of car, maid of honor, wedding colors, number of children…. on and on) had five options. Four of those options would be favorable, things you wanted, one of those options would be negative, the worst possible answer you could think of. So that way you weren’t guaranteed to have a good result. This provided my friends and I with hours of hilarity when we were young. Kind of makes me miss it…
Man, I just moved out of my mother’s house, and I literally went through over 10 years of my belongings. (I was about 13 when I stopped throwing things away haha)
I cannot tell you how many MASH’s I threw away. So so so funny to see this here, now, after that!
we just did this at work about a month ago.
all of us are in our 20’s, mind you. and no, MASH is not good at predicting the future, as i did not marry Zack Morris.
and I never did marry Harvey from Sabrina
We’ve been playing a mini version at work lately…when we’re bored.
We just have M.A.S.H. (of course), Husband, # Kids, Honeymoon, Job, and Car. Small enough to play through pretty quick. We’ve come up with some hilarious ones!!
My friends and I used to play this a lot. We added letter at the end of MASH for more options but I can’t remember what they were. For some reasonI think Condo was an option. I had a sketch book FULL of MASH and other games like it. Anyone ever do the FLAMES one? Or the TRUE LOVE formula to findout what “percent” your compatibility is? I used to do those with my crushes, but also my favorite tv couples to see if their love would last. Yikes…
Ha! Yea I remember the True Love formula!! We did that relentlessly…
Yeah, we did the TRUE LOVE formula…..I actually did it recently one night when I was bored out of my mind! It can be pretty funny!
I’m not sure I know FLAMES though…..
Aww, I got crossed off.
I can’t help but notice that the pictured M.A.S.H. was improperly done. Hugh Grant gets crossed off, and the rest wouldn’t all come up as the fist one. This is a Nostalgic win FAIL.
How is it not done right? I just sat here and did it and got the same answers.
Wow, I’ve totally forgotten about MASH. I haven’t played this since grade 5.
It wasn’t until I grew up that I learned about the spiral thing– we would just choose a random number in my classes, it amounted to the same thing.
Yep, I’ve definitely played hours of MASH. It looked the same and we had about 14 categories. Even what planet we’d live on. LOL!
And Bandana is right. The results are impossible unless they used a different system than I’m aware of.
Looks like the number should have been 8 to get those results.
Also, Mansion would have been crossed off already. But there could be more hidden categories we don’t know about.
Um…it does work. Just start with MASH then go from Boys to Careers to City to Cars.
Thank you!! I’m glad I found your answer!! I was beginning to think I was crazy…I just tried it twice and got the same answers shown….that’s how we did it in school…..:)
What’s really funny is that I was just discussing this game with my freshmen on Friday. I teach at an all-girls school, and the girls had found a website to play the game electronically.
http://www.swingsetpress.com/playmash.htm
My friends and I never liked the idea of living in a shack, so we changed the S to studio for studio apartment.
I played this in jr. high! For the boys section, I used to use the names of a few guy friends, and then the boyfriend I had at the time (hoping he would win). For some reason I always landed on the same guy! Ricky… I didn’t like him at the time other then just as friend.
Time makes fools of us all, we’ve been dating for 7 years and are getting married next summer.
Never did get that ‘98 purple mustang convertable though…
That is so cool. I’m seriously hoping that I don’t end up with the guy that I always seemed to end up with in the game.
We always used to play this. But the person who was doing it for you used to make dots until you said stop, then the number of dots represented the random number. I always ended up living in a shed but with a limo, why I wouldn’t just live in the limo we never understood.
We did the dots thing as well… I played this two years ago all the time in study hall… I think I’ll play this tomorrow with my friends. XD
I just did one according on the website, and, apparently, I will drive a blue Saleen, live in a Shack, marry a married dude (obviously the not-desired option) and have no kids, and I will be a Journalist in Hell! The place for all the best scoops!
Just did it… I will live in a SHACK in GRANADA, SPAIN with ORLANDO BLOOM, working as a TRANSLATOR and driving a BUICK.
I used to cheat and list the cutest boy twice.
I played it as MASH IT with IT being Igloo and Teepee. I’m a freshman in college and I played it all last year in precal with my friends. A few guys in my physics class created the category of “mistress” so us girls decided that we could have “man whores”. We usually put ridiculous things like Batman, Voldemort or Indiana Jones as the husbands/man whores and ludicrous careers like “Professional moose impersonator”. I saved a lot of these and they’re always good for a laugh.
This game is an instant classic. I feel like getting my friends in college together and playing it now and getting epic with it. Sounds like a good sleepover.
I loved this game, we eventually started calling it Cash Em (Car, Apartment, Shack, House, Elevator, Mansion).
Oh my god! I used to play this all the time at sleepovers! We’d get huge lists going, we’d have like 50 things!
Great nostalgia win!
we used to play this in primary school all the time, we played the “M.A.T.C.H.” version though, and i’m pretty sure we had a fifth list for number of kids you would have or something like that. It took a surprisingly long time for this game to get old!
My neighbors and I used to play this in chalk out on our sidewalks…then we were always worried that one of the actual boys would walk by and think we were stalkers! I also played this at a bar last year with a few of my friends, we used local celebs, like the Mayor of our town, Weather guy and 60-something news anchor!
We used to play MASH RAP (Rich Average Poor). For jobs, I always wound up being a waitress. I tried that once…didn’t like it!
One night being stupid and nostalgic, my best friend from college and I added categories like “How Will I Die” and “What color will my wallpaper be?” and others I can’t even remember now.
We also played where you got to list 2 desirable choices and 2 undesirable ones – just to make it interesting.
OMG! Points for knowing who Ioan Gruffudd is! *sigh*
I played this a couple of times when I was a kid.
My friend’s daughter and her friend did this for me about 2 summers ago. Every time they asked me what guy to put in the husband category, they both sqealed
“Eeeeew. He’s old! Like thirty-something!”
“Yeah, but he’s hot. Wait a minute. I’m almost thirty.”
“I know! Haha!”
They were nice enough to let me put my real husband in that category, though. Unfortunately for him, at the end of the game I was to marry Michael Jackson (the “new” creepy one, not the 80’s young Michael Jackson in his prime. The girls were too young to know the ‘Thriller’ Michael.)
Ah, memories. I’ll have to teach my girls to play this game. That, and all of the fun hand-clapping games girls play.
Wow, this is the first one that’s ever really stunned me because I’d forgotten about it for so long. I probably haven’t seen or thought about it in 18 or 20 years. …Needless to say, most of my friends in gradeschool were girls.
I continue to play this a lot (of course I’m a teenager)
My friends and I of course added horrendous things just for fun
At one point in time I had -1/2 children in one of them and lived on the dark side of pluto
OMG, this was indoor recess heaven when I was in elementary school! We played it a number of ways, but the most popular “rule” was that you absolutely HAD to put down one awful option for each category. It was torture in 4th grade, getting “married” to the creepy boy who ate paste. LOL.
And we either used the spiral, the psychotic dot method, or the zig-zag (counting the number of points).
Kids at my school play that all the time.
I only learnt to do that about a year ago xD
It lives on!
Holy hell, this is coming back. Towards the end of last year it started going around my school (I’m a freshman in high school, going into sophomore)
omg, I completly forgot about this until just now….soooo many notebooks devoted to that game
I loved playing this game with my friends. I remember we had to write who we wanted to marry, # of kids, jobs we want, # of pets, animal, dream vacations, vacation home, vechile, car color, and even more!!!!
