Epic Win: The Very Hungry Caterpillar

Submitted by Matt B
The Very Hungry Caterpillar is another one of those bedtime stories that many of us demanded as children. The story was very simple, but the illustrations were intricate and spell-binding. The only thing that didn’t make sense to us as we started to get older was why the caterpillar ate all of that fruit and junk food – caterpillars are generally herbivores that live off of plant life.

First! Yay!
‘The Very Hungry Caterpillar’ made my life when I was a child!
Same here! I always knew the dutch version though, it was called:
Rupsje NooitGenoeg
A strange way to say
Caterpillar-NeverEnough
Hell with the title the thought is the same!
In German it’s similar, it’s called “Raupe Nimmersatt”.
I loved it for the pretty images.
Looks like you still are a child.
Saying “first” as if it holds some merit to your following point.
It just makes you look retarded.
your face is retarded.
Your blast from the past’s face is retarded
I used to see my first grade teacher around my hometown, and every time she saw me she’d tell me that on the first day of school, I read this book to the entire class. I don’t remember doing that, but apparently it’s something that stuck in her mind for at least 15 years…
My favorite was The Very Quiet Cricket, because when you got to the end of the story the book made a cricket chirping sound.
oh my gosh! i totally remember that!!! it was at my school and everyone fought over it the second we got a break. i won about 2% of the time though >.>
Try this version – Mitch Benn’s Rock Opera!
I actually just found this in the bargain bin at booksamillion.com for under $3! Lots of great books for cheap there if you haven’t heard of it.

???
A slight faux pas, but ‘plant life’ when referring to animal life tends to refer to leaves, stems, and the like.
…no it doesn’t. 0.o;
Isn’t the main educational purpose of the story that you shouldn’t desire too much?
And ofcourse to explain how butterfly’s reproduce.
I read this to my daughter every night.
my dad bought me this for me when i was very young, and i treasured it for years… it was the first book i bought for my kids
Eric Carle is win. Plain and simple. Where I would read anything, those books were about all my brother would read. And any one that could make my brother (and other less than avid readers who won’t pick up anything not assigned to them) read for pleasure is a win.
Aww… I loved this book!! There were nights I would refuse to go to sleep unless my dad read that book for me! ^^
Lol I remember this from my childhood! In my opinion it was the second best book ever. The first was where the wild things are. That book was great.
Saw the coolest thing the other day. was down an arcade in here in melbourne and in the window they had a plush caterpillar. looked just like the cover. but it was at least 4 foot long and cost AU$150. despite that price it was actually quite tempting
OMG! This was my favourite book growing up! He even came to my school and I won an autographed copy!
I used to love this book! <3
My mother has pictures of me, 4 years old, sitting on the brick pile with my dad listening attentively while I told him all about the story of the very hungry caterpillar, complete with storytelling child hand gestures. I never had the book, but I’d somewhat memorized how the story went when I had it read to me in PreSchool. In the years to come, we read more of those Eric Carle books, at at some point in second grade, attempted to copy his art technique.
I have a copy of this at home. I got it as a 25th birthday present from my partner. It was my favourite book when I was little.
