Epic Win: The Stinky Cheese Man

Submitted by cheeserino
The Stinky Cheese Man and Other Fairly Stupid Tales was an epic parody of all of the fairy tales we were told as children. They didn’t make much sense though unless you already knew the story of The Gingerbread Man or The Ugly Duckling.

No this is a fail.
Incorrect. The stinky cheese man was the best.
your comment is a fail.
The Stinky Cheese Man was win. I remember having it read to the class back in… first grade maybe? It was the classes favorite book.
As ‘fairly stupid’ as it was, this book was epic win for the brilliance inherent to its illustrations– did you know the face of the Stinky Cheese Man himself is a reference to a Dali painting, “Apparition of Face and Fruit Dish on a Beach”? It’s things like that which help instill culture in children– they think of it as something made just for them and then ten years later they see the painting and they’re like OOOOHHH is THAT what that was all about!
There were two books that were always read to us by guest readers, this and Oh, The Place You’ll Go.
This book was such a win! I still have the copy I bought from a school book fair not too long after my 6th grade teacher showed it to the class as inspiration for writing and illustrating our own “Fairly Stupid Tales”.
Now we have to list the “True Story of the Three Little Pigs” (the wolf was just trying to borrow a cup of sugar, really, and he had a bad cold) and the other couple of books by the same people.
By Alexander Wolf – A. Wolf. “Who could pass up a ham dinner?” Both are awesome books, but I didn’t read them until I was in my 30s.
I have this book, and I’m not even a legal adult yet. Is there something wrong with me? D:
nope not at all! i do too…i’m 14. i loved it when i was little…
I love this book.
I need to find a copy of it. I read it so long ago.
I might have enjoyed this book… if I’d ever heard of it.
omggggg i’d totally forgotten about the amazingness that is this book. thank you Once Upon a Win!
OH! I bought this at a rummage sale a few years ago for myself, not my son! I don’t think he was old enough to get it then – I need to break it out and try again, maybe he’ll find it funny now.
All he wanted to do was correct me.
Delightfully twisted!
I love The Stinky Cheese Man! Got it for my girls…….who are now adults. But I still have the book. It’s absolutely brilliant.
I loved this book as a kid! I thought it was just so hilarious. I still have the book and read it sometimes when I’m bored.
Read it again. It’s not a parody of fairy tales, it’s a parody of publishing. Read EVERYTHING, including the covers, the blurbs, the front data pages, and you’ll realize that it’s even more sly than most people think. It’s brilliant.
Oh man, win win win!
I had this book when still quite young…I think it’s part of the reason for why I’m such a screwed up 18-year old today….
Regardless, I loved this book, and now that I’m thinking about it, I’m actually kind of sad that I can’t find it anymore…
Off to the used bookstore for me!
this book rocks. we used it at uni in my children’s lit unit. but now i have no idea where i’ve put it. probably in a cupboard somewhere.
Gosh… some of these wins make me feel old… and I’m only thirteen!
the guy that wrote it came to our school and read all of them to us.
I have a copy of this signed by Jon “Rhymes With Fresca” Scieszka. “To Rainee, my best stinky … CHEESE friend.” This and the Time Warp Trio… effing epic. I’d love to shake this dude’s hand.
YES!
YES!
YES!
holy crap this was my favorite book. I kept it checked out of my school library for 6 months
I remember the assistant principal reading this to my kindergarten class and we all loved it. It was epic! He was cool.
Does anyone remember the thing with “Jack and the Beanstalk”?. It just RAMBLED ON AND ON for the entire page and I remember EXACTLY what it said. “Once upon a time there was a gint. The giant squeezed Jack and said’ TELL ME A BETTER STORY OR I WILL GRIND YOUR BONES TO MAKE MY BREAD!’ Jack thought ‘He’ll kill me if I do, he’ll kill me if I don’t… there’s oly one way to get out of this.’ Jack cleared his throat and began his story.”
I read this to my class and I still have my copy signed by Scieszka. he was my favorite author growing up.
I was just thinking about this book a few days ago!
Epic win!!
Fee Fi Fo fum!
I smell the blood of an English man!
Ill grind your bones to make my bread!
I still remember that story…
This is that old? I loved this when I was in 5th grade. Ah, memories.
OMG! I thought I was the only one who ever heard of this book! I think I still have it somewhere.
