Epic Win: Sixteen Candles

Submitted by Ashley

“What’s happening hot stuff?”

What would the 80’s have been if it weren’t for John Hughes and Molly Ringwald? Sixteen Candles is an Epic Win for all of it’s crazy quirkiness. Long Duk Dong, the geek, etc., were just icing on the cake of an epic movie that defined a generation.

Incorrect source or offensive?

“No more yankee my wankee.” Classic. Quite.

    • Dave says:

      Donger need FOOD!

This was my favorite John Hughes movie, probably because of the boobies, and because how much I could related to the dorks/geeks/nerds… I *knew* how much a box of floppies cost. ;-)

      • Stick says:

I can’t decide if Floppy Dics should be an Epic Win in and of themselves. They really bring me back.

        • Phaffie says:

          Which ones – 5 and 1/4 or 3.5?

          • Dave says:

Five and a quarter, of course. The 3.5″ weren’t even floppy. ;-) In one job, I worked with those oversized ones… 9″? Don’t remember the size, just that they looked comical and were always too flimsy and easily bent if you didn’t get them into the drive just right.

            That sounds dirty.

            • Anniee451 says:

LOL – I worked with those too. In fact, I worked on one machine – an ancient Varityper – that was the size, shape and COLORING of an old school arcade game – like a big red “Frogger” game in the office; you had to stand at it to work. And it used those huge disks, which went bad real quick and held like…I dunno 3 bytes of info? LOL Who knew?

And as you stood there typing in your text or your numbers that showed up either grey on grey or green on grey (and made you blind), the whole machine would do this loud, thundering, “kaCHUNKkaCHUNK, KaCHUNK,kaCHUNK, KaCHUNK, kaCHUNK Kakakaka-CHUNK kaCHUNK” hehe. Give me a good old IBM Selectric any day of the week; the Cadillac of typewriters.

But how far we’ve come, eh?

              “The 3.5″ weren’t even floppy”

              I know, right?!

              • Anniee451 says:

It even moved as it chunked…it was like a washing machine when it’s in spin but slightly unbalanced…

  2. ass says:

    second !

  3. D.R. says:

This was such an awesome movie. Whenever I need to feel better, I watch it.

  4. Stick says:

    The Breakfast Club was better.

  5. LESLIE says:

c’mon pretty in pink people!!! Duckie ftw!!!

  6. Anniee451 says:

Epic win. The best of all brat-pack era comedies, by far. A laugh a minute! Only weak point – Molly Ringwald and the sappy ending. Terrific ensemble cast.

  7. CaliforniaDave says:

    Never saw it.

  8. Fwee says:

Holy crap, I literally just finished watching that for the first time when I came on here and saw this. o.o Freaky coincidence. LOL.
    Awesome movie. xDDD

  9. Jessica says:

I was born shortly before this movie was released, but my stepmom loves it and showed it to me. GREAT FLICK! Pretty in Pink and Thr Breakfast Club have nothing on Sixteen Candles! Dong? *clap clap* Dong? *clap clap*. LMAO

  10. it’s…. the mayor winner… great movie.

  11. Jenny says:

Ha i just watched this movie for the first time on TV… man that guy was hawt… too bad his film career never paned out

  12. Rachel says:

Oh how Molly Ringwald traumatized a whole generation of girls! We all grew up thinking Jake Ryan would be waiting for us, and that the dorky girl could get the hot guy…man were we in for a rude awakening. But you had to love the Brat Pack movies, John Hughes knew how to accurately portray kids without patronizing them yet really show the fantasy element with the kids running rampant around $1.5M homes in Chicagoland ‘burbs and adults having almost no presence at all. Give me the Brat Pack and that wonderful simplicity of the 80’s instead of the crap they call movies nowadays!

  13. Laura says:

One of my favortie Brat Pack movies, if not just for young nerdy John Cusack.

    • 2wellread says:

Amen Sister on the John Cusack win!! Better Off Dead was one of my favorites of this era, but Sixteen Candles was a close second.

One question for everybody though: I’ve seen this movie probably 50 times, and could recite it by heart when I was younger… but I’ve never seen Grandma kick Dong in the nuts… was this cut out of the first (VHS) video release?

    • Anniee451 says:

If you want to see the youngest, nerdiest Joan Cusack as well, try “My Bodyguard” with Martin Mull, Adam Baldwin, the inimitable Ruth Gordon etc. She totally stood out even though her part was small.

We knew (hoped) she was going places even then. It predates 16 candles :)

(Which, of course, Joan Cusack was in as well – back brace girl ;) )
