Epic Win: The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time

Submitted by Kevin F

We at I Can Has Cheezburger are purists and believe only in the great and true Epic Win of the original Legend of Zelda, however, based on the votes that you gave Ocarina of Time, we were compelled to post it to the front page. The only problem is that there was so little experience throughout that we couldn’t find anyone to do a decent write-up, so the task falls upon you, the users. Why is Ocarina of Time such an Epic Win?

PS. We really do take your votes into consideration when posting items to the front page, so go to the voting pages and make your voice heard.

  1. Frank says:

    HELL YES!

If you vote negative, then there’s just something wrong with you.

    • Ghostwish says:

Voted negative because that’s way too new to be nostalgic.

      16bit or gtfo.

      • pplwithgoodtaste says:

ummmm, its not new…. its 10+ years old.
thats not new, if it were a gamecube game(it came out FIRST on the gamecube) then it would be reasonable.

        • NintendoChic says:

Uhm, seriously!? Ocarina of time came out on the 64 YEARS before there was even such thing as a stupid mother effin gamecube… This game deserves nostalgic win because it was an epic game!!! And, it won best game ever created. If you have a problem with this game, then take it up with the rest of the Zelda fans. A huge majority of them give this thumbs up. Period.

          • Anonymous says:

ta thes is the best game ever! i have the gamr sill have the game rock on lenk and if you have a problum wit lenk then come to my huse and we will go ronds

      • Destin says:

I agree with you. N64 is not nostalgic. I still play mine semi-regularly and don’t feel as if I’m playing out-dated games.

        • AngelMax says:

It’s difficult to determine when technology has become “outdated”. It is impossible to find N64 games at retailers nowadays (meaning not stores like Babbage’s and The Exchange that sell them second-hand). Even shortly after “Majora’s Mask” came out, my dad and I had to get it at a flea market. I hate how they stop making games for systems so soon after the system comes out.
          WHEN WILL THE MADNESS END?!?!?!?!?!?

          • Anonymous says:

Is The Exchange just a Pittsburgh thing? Because I’ve only seen them the surrounding areas and never in other states/cities.

        • Scott says:

I still play SNES and NES regularly. Doesn’t make them non-nostalgic. People would even argue that only Atari is really “Nostalgic” and that Nintendo is too new.

The N64 is 11 years old, you know. Most of us were still pre-teens when it came out.

        • Anonymous says:

just because you still use it doesn’t mean it’s not nostalgic to the rest of us..

i mean seriously.. if that’s your logic.. then vcr and cassettes are not nostalgic either..

      • Dexaan says:

I’m going to argue that like Weird Al, the amount of win allows it to be posted here even though the nostalgia value is fairly low.

    • Nick says:

      THIS GAME IS FREAKIN AWESOME!

This is the most amazing game. I play this game regularly and it’s still one of my favorite games. It was the first game I ever played that really had free-roaming capabilities. One thing I really remember is that your character (Link), never said anything. He’d just gasp or scream from time to time.

      Amazing win.

      • Dr. Zoidberg says:

yes nick, this game is awesome i love it, but if you hear the intro music you’ll notice that its the magic flute sound from SMB3 for the NES

    • OOTeriffic says:

Agreed. I mean, it was the first game EVER in which you could run around a world in 3-D! I still play it to this day because it’s just too awesome. The fact that there was any doubt at all about whether or not to post it is beyond me.

      • Al says:

Was it the first? Correct me if I’m wrong, but I thought Super Mario 64 came first.

        • Nato says:

Correct. SM 64 was released June 1996, and OOT was released November 1998. (Japan release dates)

          • ChzCakeKitteh says:

While that might be true, this is still one of the first, and it did kick some serious butt when it came to video games. I do still play it, mostly because nothing like it has come out since then, and i think that’s just pathetic.

            • jjmblue7 says:

Well aside from the 3 3d Zelda games that followed it…of which two (MM and WW) were better IMHO.

              • ArrestThisMan says:

Majora’s Mask was definitely a great game. I love how it subtly deals with at whole Butterfly Effect/time altering theory (on the side quests). Wind Waker was just weak in comparison to Ocarina and Majora’s. Never played Twilight Princess is it any good?

Another similar game to the series was Fable… but it was still too short compared to Zedla games.

                • Lyrina says:

Heck no! Majora’s mask was NOT a great game. Three days to save
                  the world? no thanks!

                  OoT was WAY better.

                  • whoah says:

MM was not as good as OoT, but it still was a great game. You have no idea what you are talking about.

                  • Somepartsareme says:

I hate you… so much right now. I happen to be listening to my MM soundtrack right now. You don’t understand that game AT ALL. Probably didn’t talk to anyone except for the cutscenes. I actually prefer MM, it deals with the apocalypse in such a unique way. Everyone has problems for you to alleviate so they can die happy at the end of the three days, and you get a reward. And then? You start over at day 1, and you keep the reward, but they have the same problem. It’s really touching and scary at the same time. Plus, I believe that Koji Kondo really put all his heart into this. Every song fits perfectly, they all have an effect on you, and they all manage to have the underlying feeling of impending doom.

                    TL;DR: Majora’s Mask freaking rules.

                    /rant

                    • rashok says:

Yeah, the proper ending to the Kafei and Anju quest made me cry… on the inside..

The music was also amazing, definitely on par with Ocarina of Time. My only complaint with it was that there were only four dungeons, because they really are the meat of the game. Still, the atmosphere and plot was VERY original (no princess saving here) and exciting.

  2. Aust Naile says:

I have this game, both on N64 and in a Game Cube bundle pack and it is the most amazing game of its time.

  3. zeldafan says:

New or old, OOT is just EPIC and a major WIN altogether. It’s just an awesome game and who cares if it’s not extremely old (btw there are other zelda games that are much older and just as much of an epic win). Just the game play and storyline makes it a win.

  4. IB says:

This game is such an epic win, it may not be nostalgic to older people but people in their 20’s remember when this was an advancement of the ages… it came out over 10 years ago…. and its still the favorite amongst a lot of people because they still remember it… sure games like the original mario are nostalgic, but i am sure they have already been featured…

  5. homelessgirl says:

    Major epic Win! nuff said

  6. Wesker says:

Memories…. this is so an Epic win, First LOZ game I ever played or was it Majora’s

  7. Eric says:

I would argue that Ocarina of time represents the peak of the Zelda franchise so far, with its seamless transition to 3D, intriguing story-line, and challenging gameplay. Overall, the game is almost perfect, with numerous side-quests, mini-games, and compelling dungeons. Twilight Princess, although an excellent game in its own right with updated graphics and memorable characters, seems in some ways a clone of Ocarina, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing in that you take a formula established back with A Link To The Past and run with it, but even the head of the Zelda franchise has acknowledged that the next game should go in a different direction. While the original Legend of Zelda is indeed an epic win in its own right being a similarly groundbreaking achievement in gameplay and style (its open-endedness being especially innovative), Ocarina represents the potential of this original masterpiece fulfilled.

    • Wyde says:

‘ Couldn’t've put it better myself. I love this game. I WILL go so far as to say that it’s the greatest game of all time. Every little detail of it was… simply indescribable. Roaming over Hyrule Fields… riding the horse (I can’t believe I forgot its name) everywhere… battling the biggest, baddest, and most awesome bosses of any game (and those two weird ones)… the controller-launching frustration of the puzzles, most of all of the Water Temple… dealing that last blow to Ganon, who gave up his soul to turn into a monster just to try to kill you… the underwear-destroying fright of the bottom of the Well (Blood?! All over the place?! In an “E” game?! FROM NINTENDO?!)… and, finally, saving the whole Goddamned world for the fifthandhopefullyfreakingfinal time.
Words can’t describe… You just have to play it yourself. It’s the only way.
The only two words I can think of (besides the above 300) is simply…
      Epic. Win.

If only I didn’t lose that one freaking cable to play it all over again.

  8. mjc says:

“Why is Ocarina of Time such an Epic Win?”

It’s really not. It’s regular win at best. The game is good, but not nearly as good as people say. As was said, the original Legend of Zelda is epic win. Maybe A Link to the Past is epic win. Ocarina of Time is regular win and nothing more. Good day gentlemen.

    • Matrix says:

OoT = greatest game ever made!

    • Amber says:

I guess it’s a matter of taste, of course :3
I personally found it much more enjoyable than the first Zelda, but again, my opinion.

    • Lulzy says:

It really depends on your age. First of all, hands down, this is one of the best games ever made. I mean, it’s a lot of fun, amazing soundtrack, etc. However, the games greatness is multiplied to anybody who feels nostalgic about it. Although it was only about 8 years ago that I was playing this game, it makes me feel like nothing ever has, playing it again today.

  9. miroku says:

I didn’t like it then, and I still don’t like it.

MM was a good 3D Zelda. But I am more of a fan of the 2D ones.

  10. cT says:

Weak. The game is cool, but as stated in the front page comments, the original zelda is the only true nostalgic epic win of the series… the late 90s is hardly “Once upon a ….”

    • Stick says:

It is for some people. You don’t have to be midle aged to be nostalgic.

      • candycane says:

Who you calling middle aged, sucka?

        • Stick says:

I’m just saying that there are a lot of people (not quite Gen X but not Gen Y either) who will have nostalgia for thier youth and it’s not any less worthy because it’s less than 20 years old.
Go on to any old Nick show on IMDb and you’ll find hundreds of For The 90s Kids threads.

          • Wyde says:

Gen X is teens in the ’90’s, and teens in the 2000’s are the iGeneration, thanks to the technology revolution.

            • Krepta says:

Actually, Generation X is teens of the 80s. The Gen-X buzz began in the early nineties when they all became twentysomethings and started sitting around doing nothing and watching movies like Scream and Clerks.

The teens of the nineties, like me, identify themselves as Echoboomers.

          • Lila says:

Unfortunately, the powers-that-be have lumped everyone to have come of age after GenX into GenY or the ‘millenials.’ The fact that I remember before the internet and the fall of the Soviet Union, while my boyfriend’s sister didn’t even know what the Soviet Union was (she was 10 when we asked her, not an idiot), doesn’t seem to matter.

      • Amber says:

True. I’m 17 now, and I find it quite nostalgic to sit down and play my old video games, especially Ocarina of Time. :)

    • Sir Scarfalot says:

      “anything pre-2000 qualifies as nostalgic”

If my guess is correct (and it is, the video says so), then this game came out originally in 1998, qualifying it as an epic win.

The real test of this win is just how GOOD it is. And, IMHO, it’s easily within the top ten games of ALL time. Swords, a great storyline, epic music and plain awesome graphics for the time? what more DO you need??

  11. Jeff says:

As Eric mentioned, it was an extremely successful transition to 3D for the franchise. It was also the game that pioneered Z-Targeting, making it easy to fight enemies in a 3D space.

The storyline was epic. Traveling back and forth in time and playing as Young Link or Old Link to advance the story was awesome. The dungeons were also extremely clever and challenging. Who remembers the Water Temple?

The soundtrack was epic and very memorable. Even messing around with the Ocarina was fun. But there was something about walking into Hyrule Field for the first time and seeing how expansive it was, and then finding out you could actually make your way to that mountain with the smoke ring around it was so cool.

Yes, it might only be 11 years old, but an epic, epic win all around.

    • Gustav says:

As whut i said also, Water temple is the most memorable dungeon in the whole game not only cause it was so complicated, but the awe of the place that’s so huge, but at the same time so small,(felt bigger cause of the slow walking with iron boots) but none the less an epic win, people say its not nostalgic, but for the people who grew up in the 90’s like myself, it gives me old memories when i was a kid playing in my N64 and NES…. Never the less some people might say no because its not over 20 years old, but nostalgia isn’t graded by time its been in existence, but something that basically gives you a sensation of remembering your past with a sudden swoop of memories… (some people say the older the better but that doesn’t relatively new stuff isn’t nostalgic) just because it’s not 16 bit or 8 bit doesn’t mean it isn’t nostalgic

      • HotDaschund says:

I really loved this game when moy mom played it when I was Eight. I loved watching her solve the puzzles, and battle the “visious Momsters” as I calld them, and hunting with that lady to find her special dog. (it made you wonder why she wouldn’t go get it her SELF.) It may not be SO far back to be noglastic, but I still call it an epic win.

(sorry, I can’t get into 3-D with you guys.. I have foggy memories!)

  12. Kelly says:

WOOOOOOT! this game pretty much sums up my childhood and bonding with my brother and cousins. we even made up songs about it.

but OMG Navi pissed me off so much! HEY!! LISTEN!!! *

    • Stick says:

Oh, my God. That and the duck hunt dog were touturers of my childhood videogames.

    • Dexaan says:

I dunno, in Majora’s Mask they replaced it with a chime sound, and it just doesn’t have the same personality.

      • CaptainGanny says:

I agree. We love to hate Navi and I was actually disappointed, as annoying as Navi can be, when Tatl didn’t say HEY! LISTEN! when I played Majora’s Mask.

        • Greyfox says:

In the end, I think all of us who played and loved this game came to love and miss Navi once she was gone, no matter how annoying she was… :(

  13. Metallemmy says:

I recently got the complete soundtrack for this for only 10 bucks!

  14. zuljalar says:

such a win because its still good! even compared to more recent games such as COD5 or halo 3- despite the graphics, zelda still tops them all!

    • Sir Scarfalot says:

Strewth! but, that’s going to be really hard to prove to younger guys who started with the new games, they won’t see the awesomeness for the sharpish edges.

      • Rhiannercakes says:

Well, maybe with kids you can get them to like it, just don’t give them the new consoles until they play the old ones.
        Haha.

      • Jenn says:

Seriously. I have a friend who thinks Halo 3 is the best thing ever to exist in the history of the universe. I keep telling him Legend of Zelda is BY FAR the best franchise ever created. He won’t have it. The kicker is he’s NEVER played a single Zelda game.

        • jeffey says:

i have a friend just like that ugh its so annoying ive tried to get him to play one but he is just too much of a sony nerd he says zelda is for kids AHHHHH!

        • CaptainGanny says:

NEITHER HAS MY FRIEND! He even plays as Zelda when we play Super Smash Brothers but he’s never played a Zelda game! I jokingly told him I wouldn’t talk to him again until he played one.
But despite being an immense fan of the new consoles, he has never tried to argue that Halo beats Zelda. He has that over your buddy at least, :/

  15. OodleDoodle says:

    Because it is magical.

  16. Booy says:

This and “A Link to the Past” on the SNES were the pinnacle of the Zelda series. I can never decide which one is my favorite.

  17. Rhiannercakes says:

I will never, ever get sick of the Zelda series.
I’ve probably beaten Ocarina of Time like 20 times and I’ll never get sick of it.
    Epic win indeed.

  18. Rob says:

OMG! This game is so awsome!!! brings back so much memories!!!!1

  19. Krepta says:

I am utterly astonished that no one on staff has played this game– were you all Playstation kids or something?

  20. Max says:

AWESOME! The only epic win worth mentioning! Finally! ;D

  21. JimmySwayne says:

OoT was a beautifully crafted game.
Anyone else remember (dare I say it’s name?)
    THE FREAKING WATER TEMPLE?!
    GOD!
That had to be the most DIFFICULT part of the entire game.

    • Elk says:

The water temples in Ocarina of Time and Twilight Princess were devilish, to say the least. Those were the few times I ever needed a guide to help me :(

      • ShippoTheCRAZYTrekkie says:

I absolutely agree. In the OoT one, there’s a block that, if you push it too soon, you can’t get to a key that you need and have to start the whole game over! They are definitely hard!

        • Raven Mitah says:

          I have no clue what you’re talking about. I’ve played this game at least twice every year since it originally came out (only the N64 version) and I’ve never run into anything like that. I’ve looked everywhere over the internet I can think of for glitch information, and I have not found anything like this. O_o;

          • Stick says:

There’s this one part, right when you get in the Tree where you have a wine wall and a chest. If you jump on that floating platform and it crumbles, you can’t get back to the door you came through. (Or if you can, it’s very hard.)

            • Dead Flag says:

Actually all you have to do is shoot the ladder lodged in the spiderweb above the door. I never noticed it until my playthrough on the Gamecube port of the game years later…

              • JimmySwayne says:

I never had any issues with the Deku tree, but that freaking water temple… I would love to meet the mind that came up with that many complicated puzzles.

                • arcade419 says:

I hated the water temple! That liquid boss was super annoying!

                  • Alice says:

C’mon now. That wasn’t even the hard part! x’D Certainly the water temple boasted(and probably still boasts) the most confusing Zelda puzzles in the history of time! Morpha was a gracious boss fight. Truely the only straight-forward thing about the whole dungeon.

Gah! But that central room! I hate that central room! I swear I go in the wrong door everytime I do that temple. At least I know to head for Ruto…

        • ChzCakeKitteh says:

He’s right, nintendo was very thorough with this game, if you did something wrong and locked out a key or something, there was always some way to get a different one and move on. some keys in the water temple are just so rediculously hidden.

        • Z says:

That puzzle got me for ages, too. I ALWAYS forgot about the space under the spikey platforms.

      • ArrestThisMan says:

I used Faroe’s Wind every time I entered that Temple and collected the two small keys and leaped towards the second level of the main room when the water level was down then I’d light the torch and open the door to the room in the middle and bring the water levels back up.

I know it’s not the right way, because I there was always a room with a lock and a room left unexplored… But I was stuck there for like 3 months before I restarted the game and did that.

    • jeffey says:

yah it took me several days to beat that one ugh it was so frustrating but so worth it the boss was easy tho

  22. Alice says:

OoT is a complete and total Epic Win. The Gameplay is wonderful, the game is wonderful, the story, the characters– Everything.
Though. Maybe it would’ve been more appropriate to just say that Zelda is an Epic Win. Because that’s just as true. Zelda– all of the Zeldas– have loveable characters and great, brain-boggling puzzles. As much as OoT is an Epic Win, it should just be Zelda as the win. With OoT as an example of the win-ness. And AttLP. ‘Cause that’s cool too. And older. x’D

  23. Anonymous says:

For many, it was their first experience with any Zelda game, for old-skool gamers, it was the long (LONG!) awaited sequel we were all waiting for. It was the reason many had to buy a N64! Plus, getting that rare gold cartridge was something to brag about.
Ocarina had the right amount of game play, the right amount of puzzles to figure out and the right amount of story to make it compelling and enjoyable. Even after you finished the game, replaying wasn’t out of the question – it was that much fun.

    • Dethklok78 says:

I completely agree with your assessment of the game. I loved the puzzles, story, graphics were awesome for that time, and it was the first N64 game I bought. I still play it quite often. This game never gets old. Oh, and I have a gold OoT cartridge.

  24. Stick says:

Thanks for posting this. I’ve spent the day playing this game. (Damn puzzles!)

  25. ShippoTheCRAZYTrekkie says:

This one’s definitely nostalgic for me because I was a kid when it came out.
This was an amazing game for the simple fact that it was the first 3D Zelda. Link had always been a flat bunch of pixels, and we finally saw him in all of his blond-haired, blue-eyed 3D glory. *fangirling* Plus, you got a pony!!!! And the dungeons were really tough! And the game seemed more like it took place in a real world, though that’s mostly due to the 3D. I was the first person in my family to beat Ganondorf at the end. I’m a total Zelda nerd. Now, if only they would keep cranking out Zelda games of this caliber. I mean, I love the series, but the whole Chibi, cell-shaded thing is a little too Saturday-morning-cartoon for my taste; it was good in Wind Waker and Minish Cap, but now it’s just getting old. I personally like the serious, darker Zeldas and want more of them! I could go for another Wii adventure like Twilight Princess, heck, even a sequel to that one. They did it with Ocarina of Time.
    Anyhoo, enough weirdness from me…

    • Z says:

While they left the cell-shaded crap with Twilight Princess, he was the girliest looking Link to date. Why couldn’t they have stuck with a more stud-muffin-y type OoT model?

  26. Pro says:

You’re right. Those nights with the crawling undeads and the flying blade thingies were reaally creepy.

It’s just a matter of time until I rebuy a N64 with it, cause it’s sooo damn good.

  27. Gaff says:

I can understand why some people question why this on here (seeing as it is just a shot over 10 years old).

I still remember playing the original games on the NES, and I vividly remember playing the Legend of Zelda on the SNES. That is nostalgia, as far as I’m concerned. I can remember a time when there weren’t any 3D games. The SNES was top of the line, and as good as it got.

That being said, I still remember how excited my Mom and Uncle were when we fired up Ocarina of Time for the first time on the N64. Their jaws both dropped. I was super impressed, too. I was still a little nostalgic for the SNES games though. Still am. I think that was the peak of console gaming for me. I look back and get nostalgic about the SNES, not the N64 too much. I guess it might have to do with the fact that I was 14 when this came out. It wasn’t as mind-blowing as say the first time I played Wolfenstein or even Duke Nukem 3D.

  28. Ivan says:

The Re-dead….those things scared the bejeezus out of me….just something about how ghastly and eerie they were.

OoT is a win of epic proportions. Hands down.

  29. Xerotaku says:

    Great Gameplay
    Intriguing Story
    Awesome Graphics, for it’s time

What makes this game nostalgic in my eyes is that it’s not only from a system that has become outdated tech-wise but when viewing the opening for the game I felt nostalgic for the time when my little brother and I got the game and started it up for the first time. Our eyes went wide as we saw the screen light-up with the moon in the background as Epona galloped across the screen. Jaws dropped when further in the opening we saw shots of the landscape and glimpses of Link. Looking over at my Gamecube which I’ve now got the bundle pack for it on I feel very inclined to dust off the system and power up a machine that I have created many fond memories with.

  30. Bex says:

Not Epic Win for me. I’d rather have seen A Link to the Past up there, a game that I to this day play again and again because of its sheer awesome. I found OoT a bit tedious, and have only played through it once.

I do, however, understand that it is Epic Win to a lot of people. I just wanted to have my say.

    • Symm says:

That is a good point. A Link to the Past is sheer awesome. OoT is also sheer awesome but Link to the Past should have been a win before OoT based on the Zelda release timeline.

  31. Blackstone says:

Speaking as one whose first Zelda experience was “A Link to the Past” and who never owned a Nintedo64, I can’t say that this is nostalgic for me. What I can say, however, is that by it’s very nature Zelda conjures up images of fond times gone by… or textured golden plastic, foldout paper maps and anguished cries as you died for the hundredth time at the end of a Darknut’s sword. As far as the epic is concerned, “Ocarina of Time” was massive in scale compared to prior entries in the series… a fully realized three-dimensional world (two if you count the future Hyrule as well) with tons of secrets and hidden subquests to complete. I for one have yet to find all the Skulltulas or max out my quiver/bomb bag. Throw quirky characters into the mix, a unique (for the time) mechanic with the Ocarina, and some of the best songs to come out of a game since Yasunori Mitsuda’s work on Chrono Trigger and Seiken Densetsu 2 and you have a recipe for pure video-gaming gold. While I was myself a bit old to have grown up with this, it still holds a place in my heart and hard drive as one of the better games I’ve had the privilege to play.

  32. Hoeloe says:

I absolutely loved this game, but it has puzzled me for a while as to why it is still as popular as it is.

First of all, the gameplay was immense and unrelenting, there was always something to do, even just walking from one end of Hyrule Field to the other, and the control scheme was very natural, so it really flowed together.

The graphics were incredibly good at the time, coupled with the size of the game, particularly at the first moment you walk into the expanse of Hyrule Field. As well as this, this was the first 3D Zelda game, and so all the other 3D ones are actually variations of things seen in this game.

The storyline by itself was not great. However, it fitted the mood of the game perfectly, and was completely unrelenting. The change in the styling of the game once you become Adult Link is fantastic and really captured a dark mood.

The enemies and bosses were incredibly memorable, each with a unique style of play, forcing you to adapt and find their weak point, rather than just running up to them and hitting them, it needed patience and skill, particularly Ganondorf and the Tennis Match you play with the energy ball.

Although, what has puzzled me is about this game and Twilight Princess. TP had better graphics, a better storyline, more fluid gameplay and some original twists, so why is Ocarina of Time still held to be the better game.

I think it lies in two points: Memorability. Twilight Princess was good, but just not all that memorable, I honestly cannot remember much of the game, whereas I can remember pretty much all of OOT. I think it also helps with the work put into the game. OOT used up every kilobyte of memory in the cartridge, and this really comes up when playing the game. There is just something different about playing a game that is at the limit. TP on the other hand is just another game, using only some of the memory on a Wii or Gamecube disc.

And that should conclude my review about why OOT is heralded as an awesome game, and why I love it so much :D

    • csdx says:

I feel it’s because OOT was the first, and quite innovative for it’s time, with Twilight Princess, it’s largely a remake, and despite any advancements will likely lose out to the original for many people (even if only because of selective memory).

Like a previous commenter, I didn’t have a N64, but did play the (S)NES games. Link to the Past was/still is my favorite zelda game. And honestly, for me a ‘proper’ zelda game should have a top down view. I don’t begrudge this ‘new-fangled three-dee’ stuff, but in terms of nostalgia, that’s how the series will always remain for me.

  33. fidra says:

My major complaint is that Legend of Zelda is purely masculine. Can they do a version where a female rescues the Prince for a change???

    • Mettan says:

Kinda like how in Super Princess Peach, Peach had to rescue Mario for once?

    • Kelly says:

ummm…. i wouldn´t consider link to be all that masculine… he didn´t try anything with any of the girls either. i´ll bet he´s gay for ganon :)

      • Wyde says:

        *points to “E” rating*

      • JimmySwayne says:

        pfft, he’s a eunoch! XD

      • ChzCakeKitteh says:

Some of the sounds Link makes? well a lot are just high pitched yells, and he’s probably slightly above an alto in vocals… guy character, sissy voice. I mean, he gets married to that fish princess, everyone knows zelda totally wants him, and Epona’s trainer chick, as well as Saria (though she’s too small O.o)… He’s got the chicks, but he’s just a high-pitched pimp.

    • Dead Flag says:

It’s changed in recent years. Starting with OOT actually. Since then, most of the princesses have fought beside you against Ganon…

    • brass says:

Well, there was one, for the Phillips CD-i. I think it was called The Wand of Gamelon or something like that. You played Zelda, not Link.

  34. ne0x says:

Ah ha! I just finished playing this last night. I’ll probably move on to Majora’s Mask next.

  35. cT says:

No disrespect, but if 1998 is nostalgic for you, I imagine you’d :? at most of the things that get posted here cause theyre way before your time. Oh well, someday Halo 3 will be nostalgic to a generation… but halo 1 will always be the best halo game ;]

    • JimmySwayne says:

That’s rather insulting to some of us. Just because we’re a little younger, doesn’t mean we don’t remember things like parachute pants and the MC Hammer slide!

    • jbo says:

Yeah, I have to agree on this one. I remember all this 80s stuff being thrown up on this page but I remember this game too; OoT certainly is an epic-nostalgic WIN. Certainly belongs here and you don’t have to be a kid to know it.

  36. TehWofl says:

Negative, can’t put up Ocarina of Time if you don’t have A Link to the Past here. Also, i seem to be the only one that was rather infuriated when they changed the Zelda-series from 2D to 3D, never really liked the newer ones.

  37. jeffey says:

best damn game ever there is not a game that i havent played more than this one

  38. Stick says:

One thing that would always piss me off as kid: There was no jump button. You had to run over an edge to jump and I would always forget that during some important task.

    • ChzCakeKitteh says:

This just made the game easier and less complicated. Though i do remember that place you took the bomb plant and chucked it at dodongo’s cave, you had to turn around, hold Z, and back up and press A to do a backflip over the small fence to land at that heart piece. If anyone knows a better way thats great, but thats how i always did it :D . Not having a jump button took out a lot of timing, and made mopst enemies slightly harder. Take for instance the spinning blade stone dudes in the shadow temple, some of which were invisible. if you could jump, they would basically be useless (though you could just hold Z without a target to duck and they only cut off your head but it doesn’t do any damage.) if you could jump, more kids would think that jumping a gap simply had to do with jumping a little later, and use more time trying to cross a gap instead of looking around and finding the cucco to jump the gap with.

      • Fail Lord says:

Actualy, you could just plant a magic bean-thing and it would produce a platform that would take you there.

  39. NERDYCHICK says:

    Best. Game. Ever.

  40. Dethklok78 says:

Definitely an epic win. It is explicitly stated on the left side of this website that anything pre-2000 is “nostalgic.” LoZ:OoT came out in 1998. Therefore, quite an epic nostalgic win.

  41. arcade419 says:

WIN! This is without a doubt my favorite videogame of all time. I think I’ve beaten it 100 times, it never gets old. And the soundtrack is awesome.

  42. Superman64 says:

This game is awesome because of the charaters, music, and story, as well as references. When i saw this from my email subscribtion, I was like “HELL.YES!” I felt sad when no one remembered Link after the seven years and the awesome music played in the credtis, i also remember charaters like Malon, Saria, Mido, and the guy who loved the rabbit hood. This games’ story was also win, espcailly when all those things were revealed, like shiek as zelda, and such. This game gets an 11/10!

So yes, this is the reatest game ever. Better than Halo and Metal gear Solid put together.

  43. arcade419 says:

I would rather forget the water temple, it was super hard. But I get your point.

  44. Heather says:

It may not be a epic win for those who remember some really old stuff I’ve seen around here, and that I don’t remember, like the “Mork and Mindy” TV series and stuff.

But people who are in their 20’s surely do feel nostalgic about this game. You don’t have to be old to feel nostalgic about the good stuff from your childhood. People who have this game as a favorite probably are part of the guys who have seen the videogame since the pixelized good ol’ times untill nowadays, when the games challenge real life’s beauty, with new and creative storylines.

I say this, for these guys who feel like this about videogames, is an Epic Win.

  45. brass says:

Nah, the scariest thing was the miniboss from Beneath the Well that also appears in the Shadow Temple, that white blood-stained humanoid thing that was surrounded by arms that grew out the floor. When you finally beat it, it fell with its huge jaws :S

  46. brass says:

The final scene of the credit roll where Zelda and Link stare at each other, and the picture turns sepia. I was about to cry when I first saw it :(

  47. Darklight says:

Best Zelda game ever (Though Twilight Princess comes damn close).. I remember the first time I beat this game on my oooold N64, nearly started crying lol

  48. GoatTeaParty says:

Greatest video game ever. I still play this game at least once a month, if not more. What made it so great, besides having an awesome story line and game play, was just the way the N64 itself played. In my opinion, the N64 controller trumps all others, newer or older. Something about that Z button, I can’t get over it!!
btw, It’s sad that Majora’s mask doesn’t get enough recognition, though i understand why. It was awesome; the game play, the dynamics, and the concept art was BITCHIN’. There was just something about the overall feel of it that was slightly less attractive than OoT. Perhaps the different story lines throughout were just a bit too disconnected

  49. High-Low says:

OOT is Epic win and its old too!
    I was /9/ when i played it (i’m 18 now… and still playing it)
OoT was the game that got me HOOKED on the zelda series and nothing has been as good after (in my option)
    WW was based on OoT
    TP was based on OoT
the story line was epic, the level are not to easy or too hard (well the water temple is annoying.. i want to murder those freaking clam things ¬¬)
And for people who are comparing thsi to 2D Zelda- you can’t
OoT (and all 3d games) are a totaly different beast!
I like the 2D games (Link awaking is win)
but don’t feel that they can be compared to OoT(or any 3D game to be honest, it a totally diffent game play)

Also- has anyone here ever got teh ice arrows?
I played OoT like 10 times over and still can’t get enough keys!!

    • james L says:

haha those damned clams, and those rock things too

    • ChzCakeKitteh says:

Just as a thing to tell everyone, it doesnt matter how many keys you go either way, there are enough keys to get to the ice arrows both ways, either going one way individually way or both ways if you really felt like it. if you’re having trouble, try checking the ceiling in the chest room with the lens of truth. there is a hole in the ceiling somewhere.

  50. ... says:

Epic fail that noone was able to write anything up about this.

    This game still is amazing.

  51. james L says:

God, where do i start to explain how epic this win reely is….best graphics for its time, the first Zelda of the series that was created with the dual vision ability(3rd for most, 1st for aiming and looking), the bosses and dungeons so in depth, and sometimes frustrating for the puzzles, the whole ninja aspect in Gerudo fortress, being able to control epona in more realistic fashion, like other zelda games either didn’t have epona, or only allow 90 degree turn (games before OoT)

  52. JoeW says:

I’ll always remember that miserable sod sat under the tree in kakariko village at night.

“People are disgusting. My own mother and father are disgusting. You must be disgusting too!”

Was there a point to him being there?

  53. StinkomanFan says:

Yes! Yes! Yes! *breaks out in tears of joy* BEST GAME EVER!

  54. csdx says:

I can’t believe nobody’s quoted this yet, but “Well excuuuse me princess”. The Super Mario TV Show should get it’s own win page, if only for how ridiculous it was.

  55. link says:

I won this game from some drawing. I was 14 or 15, and got the cartridge that was actually gold. I recently got a N64 emulator for this game alone. Epic, and yes, quite nostalgic.

  56. blakyoshi7 says:

    A v ^ A v ^

  57. boopdeboop says:

Ummm…how about it was EPIC becuase it just was?

And you get to ride Epona around alllll you want! (woo, nerdy)

  58. Calculate900 says:

I loved this game, but I think I enjoyed Majora’s Mask more. Amazing story-lines, both of them. No generation can live in today’s world without playing these games.

  59. Pagill says:

Okay, who also remembers the epic commercial for this game’s gold cartridge? I still hear the radio saying “I hast a golden cartridge, and thou hast not. Ha ha, thou art a loser”. Even the marketing was win. This was the first video game I ever played to conclusion, and I was amazed at how enthralling it was.

  60. techtribeoc says:

Because this game made us believe that there was something out there, like there was hope in the world. For a few minutes, or a few hours, or even days, we could escape to this wondrous world where justice always prevailed as it turned into an ever longer and more in-depth story. Controls were simply while you navigated through correctly and amazingly thought out dungeons, because every aspect of the game was perfect, we could worry about the game, and not the difficulty, or being prepared for the next fight. It captivated everyone’s mind, and in turn brought together the gaming community.

  61. ascatal says:

bit new to be truly deserves to be here but totally epic

  62. Lilyjo says:

This game is an epic win. Period
Great story line, awasome gameplay and for the first time you can roam around Hyrule without restrictions, up til this point in order to move around in hyrule and with the exception of the Legend of Zelda, you need an item to go from point A to B. This game gave you the choice to roam aimlesly without having to go to a dungeon. The most memorable part is going into hyrule field and being aware that you can go where ever the hell you like. You can go to Lake Hylia and swin in is vastness without getting the some damm Flippers first. For the first time it was the storyline that move you forward not the Items needed.
And besides you remember Biggorons Quest to get the Biggoron Sword you got exactly 4:00 minutes to go from Lake Hylia to the top of Death Mountain (without cheating mind you, you only get to do that on the first time part of the quest) to the deliver the stupid eyedrops, and i don’t know about you but even with Epona you get there with seconds to spare. It shows you how big the playing field is.
To me the whole Zelda Series is an epic win. But this is to me the best. It goes to show that it is not about the damm graphics, is the gameplay and the storyline that make it great.
On a side note how come in every Zelda game water based temples are the worst (Water temple Ocarina, and Twilight, Ice temple A link to the past, etc)

  63. ChzCakeKitteh says:

There was a problem with shadow link that i have personally encountered where if you used the hammer, he would BLOCK it. I’m not joking, not screwing with you or anything. i had to restart my gaem and go back in before he stopped blocking it, so yes. very annoying.

  64. PEELZHERE says:

    Jesus Christ, YES.
Zelda:OoT WAS the game for me back when i was in the 90’s! i remember playing this game for hours straight, and i could still probably remember all the maps and secrets. <3 virtual console on wii aswell, cause i borrowed OoT from my cousin

  65. Katie says:

I don’t care if this wasn’t from the eighties, it is still epic. I don’t know what it is about this game, but just… the music, the graphics, the story, it all came together so well. I was 9 when I first played this game, and when I played it on the Wii for the first time, and I heard the opening music to the sound of Epona galloping, it very nearly brought tears to my eyes.

I think because it was just so amazing for people who played the NES and SNES Zelda games to see it really COME TO LIFE like that, on the N64, it was just amazing. I can’t tell you how many times my friends and I played out Zelda- I was the token geek girl who didn’t get on with the other girls on the playground, and the boys needed someone for Princess Zelda, so obviously this was a match made in heaven.

My favorite temple is the Forest Temple, favorite mini-boss is Dark Link (even if he was hard as hell, I just loved the idea), favorite boss is Volvagia.

ReDeads scared the PISS out of me. I slept with every stuffed animal I owned and the lights all blazing for a year after I got the Sun Song.

  66. BlackLotus says:

This game is PURE EPIC WIN. Maybe all the adults out there right now think the original is epic win, and I would have to agree. But this being the game that I played as an 8 year old child, I would have to say that this one is even more EPIC win.

Hell, this game influenced me into wanting to have a career in music. You can’t go wrong with it!

  67. Anonymous says:

Maybe this has been said… but Ocarina of Time came out in ‘99, I think… are we doing stuff beyond the eighties now? I could have missed something…

    • Anonymous says:

Stuff from the 90’s is all over this site. Also, the game came out in the US in 1998, and 11 years is pretty old for a video game.

  68. Nate The Great says:

Because its The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time.

  69. Nate The Great says:

The water temple is a bitch.

  70. jdizzy says:

This was without a doubt the BEST most EPIC game ever made. Won best game ever created…I still play my N64 even though I was like 8 When it came out. I surf eBay regularly looking for N64 games and OoT is one of the most popular on there.

  71. Symm says:

I don’t disagree with how epic OoT is but if we are naming the games epic wins then Goldeneye 007 needs to be here and Metal Gear Solid (Playstation version, not the Gamecube remake). Both awesome epics wins. Also kind of scary to think of World of Warcraft being on this site one day! And maybe Mario Kart. That game was cool. Ahh the hours I have wasted away playing that game

  72. anonymous says:

There are two things that would make this game even more EPIC, at least in my opinion.
    1. More content. Think about all of the hours and days you’ve spent playing this game playing the amazing content just to realize that it has to end sometime.
    2. On that note I get my second point. Playing after your fight. Imagine playing this game AFTER your fight with Ganon. All of the happy people, Hyrule Field NOT being all dark and gloomy…

  73. Nic says:

I’m 20, turning 21, and this game here was the third installment i played and beat, with link to the past being first and link’s awakening on the GB Pocket (yes Pocket and not the DX version), and this Link’s Adventure was the one worth remembering the most with such an invigorating storyline and connection with characters. It was the only one post 64 era worth playing over and over again.

  74. Miki says:

    LOVED this game!
Well, actually.. I just watched my family play it cause I was too young, I just rode around on Epona on Hyrule field. xD
    But I played it recently!
Twilight Princess was immense, too. Well.. Most Zelda things are.

  75. Zelda says:

Link’s Awakening, A Link to the Past and Ocarina of Time are my most favorite Zelda games.

I hate the water temples. Nintendo knew what they were doing when they created them. I spent countless hours in those temples giving my all. Nothing felt as great as leaving the damn temples, until the next time I started a new game.

A real conversation I had while moving:

Friend: How did you fit that in the back of the van?
Me: You have to go down to go up.
    Friend: -confused look- What?
Me: Never mind…you’ve never played Zelda have you? -laughs-

  76. corey says:

this game was the only one to make me cry when i heard the into, for us generation x kids, it was an amazing feat in video games, this game always reminds me of simpler times in my childhood where there was no drama in the us, exept for desert storm.

  77. Kana says:

I tried to play the NES original ‘Legend of Zelda’ a few times. Never figured out how to actually play the dang thing. Thus, my Zelda exposure is near zero.

  78. B16A says:

This game is most certainly an Epic Win. I don’t wanna hear people saying that it isn’t and the first one was cause I’ve played every non-portable console Zelda game there is and the older ones just don’t compare. I remembered Link to the Past as being epic (I played it when I was like 9 or so). I played OoT and MM later on thinking OoT was epic and MM was pretty good. I replayed LttP last year and well, OoT was hella better. LttP was too easy and boring compared to OoT. BUT, I have to say Twilight Princess was more fun than OoT but OoT had the better story. TP wasn’t tied together as well. However, I liked Midna a hell of a lot more than Navi. I’m talking about the REAL version of the game though. The Gamcube version and not the controller waggling Wii nonsense.

    In this order for me

TP>OoT>WW>MM>LttP>LA>I>II (the only game boy one I played was Link’s Awakening). For nostalgia’s sake OoT gets it cause obviously WW and TP are newer and even so I didn’t play either till last year so there’s no nostalgia in playing either.

  79. Mystic says:

Let’s just say anything Zelda is an epic win, and one day will become an nostalgic win because it is Zelda and leave it that

  80. Dave says:

playing pingpong w/ ganon’s magic with an empty bottle ftw

  81. J-what? says:

Definetly the best game ever made. This game holds soooooo many childhood memories!

  82. lål says:

This was the first Zelda-game I witnessed. Before this, the only experience I had about Zelda was the cartoon. And yes, the first thing I noticed was that Link was blonde. :P
