Epic Win: Clerks

Clerks came out at a time when all of the movies were so cookie-cutter and stale and it was like a giant breath of fresh air. Nobody expected to walk out of their neighborhood video store with a movie containing scenes like the 37 dicks dialogue, Randall’s Happy Scrappy scene, and the Chiclets gum guy, not to mention one of the most epic duo’s in film history: Jay & Silent Bob.
Dante and Randall said all of the things that we were too afraid to say, and they said it so bluntly that we propelled a comic book nerd’s debut project into the annals of cult film history.

Caution: These scenes are definitely NSFW (Not Safe For Work). Headphones recommended.

  1. totally agree… big winner!

  2. kashmir says:

    Epic, epic win.

    Salsa shark! Yeah!

    • Stick says:

Everytime I have chips, I have to say the salsa shark line.

Yes, I have done Randle’s walk- it onyl looks good on him.

  3. Cecona says:

The happy srappy clip is in spanish o.o

  4. Mimbre says:

    Kevin Smith for president!

  5. sup says:

    Great movie and good post.

Worth noting, however, that it’s not Chiclets gum it’s “Chewlies” gum.

  6. Dionysian says:

Random trivia: The plot device of the window shutter being stuck down was because it was a working convenience store, so they could only film overnight when it was closed to the public and (fairly obviously) dark outside.

I remember watching this film for the first time at a mate’s party – I bought the video the next day!

  7. RCIAG says:

I worked at a vid store when this came out & we had the poster up in our back room for ages because the tag line was “Just because they serve you doesn’t mean they like you.”

One of the few movies I saw back then that I could really identify with. It totally blew me away, (pun intended).

We still quote lines from this flick & Mallrats too.

“I’m not even supposed to BE here today!!” was my screensaver for a while.

    “THIRTY SEVEN?!?”

“Try not to suck any dick on the way through the parking lot! ”

And to paraphrase “I hate people but I love gatherings. Isn’t it ironic?”

Oh I could go on like that for days so I’ll just stop now & admit I’m a Kevin Smith junkie!

  8. PPG says:

The whole New Jersey Trilogy is EPIC WIN to me.

“Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back”? Not so much.

    • Morrick says:

For me, Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back was the first Kevin Smith movie I even heard of… and I hated it. Then one day when I worked at a convenience store, somebody told me about clerks. I then watched ALL of Kevin Smith’s movies and loved them all. After watching his other movies, I began to appreciate even Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back.

  9. Angela says:

    I concur.

  10. Skrolnik says:

At the video store I worked out, employees could get up to 5 free rentals a week as official corporate policy. Unofficial store policy was that new hires were required to use their first free rental for Clerks.

  11. Mistletoe says:

“This job would rule if it weren’t for the f****** customers.”

SO true of so many jobs.

  12. MsMsBurning says:

Never worked in a video store or convenience store but I never get tired of this film! Love it!

  13. The Fuggernaut says:

How could anyone.. ANYONE have given this a thumbs down.

I’m ashamed of you internets… and not just for 4chan this time.

  14. chowderl says:

    isnt clerks now a cartoon?

    • Alex Briggs says:

It was… for six episodes. [adult swim] is re-airing it now.

      • toribug11 says:

i’ve never seen the movie, but after all those clips, im going to netflix right now!!
also, the show is okay, its not as crudely random

      • Skrolnik says:

Six episodes were produced. Only two actually aired in its original run on ABC. From what I understand, the executive who made the decision to cancel it, actually watched it on TV the night it aired, and made the phonecall to cancel it before the first episode was done.

The scheduling department told him that they had absolutely nothing that they could have available in less than a week to fill that half hour timeslot, so he relented and let them air one more episode.

  15. MadAriad says:

I WASN’T EVEN SUPPOSED TO BE HERE TODAY!

  16. Jadielady says:

You’re not allowed to rent here anymore!!!
    YEAH!!

  17. Matador says:

    Worst. Movie. Ever.

  18. Elk says:

    Do I smell shoe polish?

  19. badcat says:

Kevin Smith’s entire career belongs under fail.

    • Gary's Girl says:

Why? Because you’re jealous that you’re not that awesome?

My boyfriend’s his doppleganger, and so I’ve now seen a good share of his films. Good stuff, especially if you happen to be nerdy like us. So go out and watch something sucky, such as Twilight, please. Thank you.

  20. mariecat says:

i love this movie! and of course, clerks 2.

after watching this, i always wanted to have a roof at work to play hockey on…

    oh, and kevin smith FTW!!!!

  21. jstagurl says:

LOVE this movie. It launched my Kevin Smith crush and made me get all the subsequent Kevin Smith flicks. Kevin Smith FTW! *dreamy sigh* Too bad he’s married….LOL

  22. Allison says:

Randall: So the casket fell over. Big deal!
Dante: Her f***ing body fell out!
Randall: They put her back in it! Its not like it matters if she breaks something!
:D LOL! Clerks = Epic win!!!

  23. Fenwick says:

I have never understood any Kevin Smith movie. All my friends do, and love them, and I sit there staring at the screen, going, “What are you laughing at?” and shaking my head. It’s like it’s some joke I’m not allowed to be in on. And Clerks is probably my LEAST favorite. Makes me sad — wish I could laugh, too, but I just don’t see it. (Everyone tells me, “Oh, you’ll like Dogma.” which is the one I haven’t seen. I just can’t bring myself to watch it…)

  24. WhoNose says:

    Chewbackaaaaahh!!!
    Wooooah what a wookie!!!

  25. Dr. Zoidberg says:

they made a cartoon of this show and put it on [Adult Swim]

  26. Yaz says:

One of my fav movies, I love most of K. Smith’s stuff :)
