Epic Win: Disney’s Haunted Mansion

once upon a win

These days just about every city has a good haunted house around Halloween, but back in our day, the only good haunted mansion to be found was at Disneyland or Disney World and could be visited year round. It used to scare the wits out of us too, after our older siblings or cousins were done filling our heads with stories about real corpses being in the mansion and things like that.

  1. Nightlyeclipse says:

The last time I went in the Haunted Mansion I was about 10 or 11. It scared me to death! I’d love to go back now and see how different it looks to me.

    • bspinky says:

i was told they changed it to something else now, which is sad i really liked that one. im going there in 3 months so i’ll see if what they replaced it with is good enough :D

      • LOLDemon says:

I’ve only been to the one in Disney World, which did have an update recently. There were some changes made, but it’s largely the same old Mansion.

The one in Disneyland gets an annual (I think) makeover to become a “Nightmare Before Christmas” themed ride during the holiday season. I’m not sure of the exact dates, but if you’re going to either park in three months, you should be able to experience the regular, classic Haunted Mansion. It’s a very well loved ride and I doubt Disney would ever completely replace it.

      • puppatoons says:

Oh,no, just some minor changes and refurbishing. No worries!

      • Nashboo says:

You heard wrong. You most likely are just mistaking the Christmas decorations for a permanent change. Every Christmas the insides are spiced up with NBC stuff.

We go every year around that time, it’s always fun :3

      • Persephone says:

There have been some small changes but the Haunted Mansion you know and love is still there. Most of the changes were upgrades to the sound systems. They added a new scenes and enhanced the attic. As a bonafide doom buggy fan and cast member it totally Rawks!

  2. puppatoons says:

I can best express my extreme love for The Haunted Mansion by showing off these costumes:

  3. Skrolnik says:

The best part was when they tried out putting a person in one of the normally empty suits of armor along the ride, jumping out and scaring random doombuggies full of park guests as they passed. That lasted until one guest got scared enough to punch the poor guy.

    • jjmblue7 says:

I totally would have punched him if that happened when I was little. I got scared and cried when I was 4 because I thought the ghost at the end was real. By the time I was twelve I learned about holograms, and when I was 18 I made my friends on the highschool band trip go on it with me because I wanted to. :P

  4. Jester says:

I’ve been there very recently- down here in Florida. They did change it, but in a good way. Added something new in places, updated some technology.. it’s -still- my favorite ride in all of Disney.

  5. LordPyrex says:

If your looking for more info on The Haunted Manison doombugies.com has a great amount of info on everything that has ever gone into the attraction over the past 40 years. All four of the haunted mansions that Disney built are there.

  6. MBS says:

    “but back in our day…”

What, are you twelve! Its awful, but I still think of the Haunted Mansion as a fairly new attraction. I remember when it first opened. I wasn’t there on it’s first day, though very soon after. It was great fun, and the little witch at the end was so cool.

  7. Bainwen says:

The changes to Haunted Mansion at WDW are really subtle. I think they definitely improve the ride. I love that it relies on creepy atmosphere instead of scare-via-startle like most of the fly by night October haunted houses do!

  8. MsMsBurning says:

A new Jonas Bros. display ought to up the scare factor!

    • jjmblue7 says:

But it would get trashed repeatedly everyday with food and such, no one wants to have to deal with that mess.

  9. foobarbaz says:

There was also a Haunted Mansion in a theme park in Germany. That park was “Holiday Park”. I remember it being pretty much the same… except none of the ghosts were friendly-silly Disney ghosts but rather corpsey-nasty things. :D I wonder if the same people who made the Disney one did that one too.

  10. LESLIE says:

definately my fave attraction there. ‘huuurrrrry baaaack, hurrrryyy baaaaack. we’re just dying to see you again.”
    lol

  11. Stick says:

I had a Disney sing along tape that was filmed at the one in California. (I think.) So when I got to see the one in Flordia, I was super excited. (That and I had just come from The Tower Of Terror.)

  12. TMP says:

I went to the one in Disneyland (California) the summer before last. Somehow, the atmosphere was largely ruined by every creepy utterance being immediately followed by a jarringly perky translation of the line into spanish.

    • Anonymous says:

Slightly wrong there…only the first safety narration (hands and arms inside the vehicle, etc) has Spanish after it now, due to the large number of Hispanic guests…it is a little jarring, but it is one line of dialogue, not the whole attraction.

  13. Deanna Olson says:

    Very cool! Thanks for sharing!!

  14. Zanna says:

I always wanted to live in the Haunted Mansion… to this day, my dream house is a replica haha… Oh well… until then I can daydream and stare at a replica.. http://www.haunteddimensions.raykeim.com/index305.html
    :)

  15. Mizz Kitteh says:

I’m afraid this is my -second- favourite ride.
    PIRATES FTW!!!!!!!!!!!!! XD

  16. dahumanz says:

Im from germany and never heard about that, you know the video was really…. it… well i was like WTF??

you got a lot of cool stuff out there…!!

seriously now, that was a little scary!

  17. Loria says:

OK so the one in Disneyland is classic and fun, hidden Mickey on the table in the ballroom. I’m very sad they changed it from a little girl to the old lady blowing the candles but I guess I understand. The one in Magic Kingdom in Florida is pretty much the same, though smells like fish. (thank you Columbia Harbor House) However, if you think this ride is only scary to small children, and the week of heart, I say go to Paris!
As in Disneyland: Paris, the the cemetery scene takes on a whole new level, you see where the US has holograms and skeletons, Paris has corpses lots and lots of them. Along with frigid cold air and the smell of…. I don’t even know how to describe it… it rocked…

  18. Tom says:

When I was little, I didn’t go through with my eyes open until the third time I went through the thing.

  19. Kurt says:

About the real corpse rumour. I don’t know how many people have heard of this gentleman, But for many years there was a man who went by the stage name of Dr. Paul Bearer who hosted a show called “Creature Feature” which showed some of the most cheesy classic horror movies of all time. Think MST 3k without the hecklers. There are clips of him on Youtube and you can click my name for a wiki link. Well, Dick Bennick Sr (His real name) was a family friend for some years. (This is actually going somewhere, so bear with me) In addition to being a family friend he was also a huge fan of Disney World, having had annual passes ever since you could get them for 25 dollars. When he passed away (Try as I might I couldn’t get my hands on his car) he was cremated and his ashes instead of being saved were scattered, you guessed it at disney world, including within the haunted mansion.

  20. Jinkies! says:

I remember the first time I went on this ride. I was 8, just about had the piss scared out of me.

  21. GoddessEvie says:

This is my ALL-TIME favorite ride at Disney Land. When I was there ten years ago for my senior band trip, I rode it, like, 15 times. I went again this last summer with a girl scout troop and made sure the girls rode this one, as well as all the other classics and the newer “thrilling” ones. I loved it just as freakin’ much, and I had one girl who went through the whole thing with her hands over her eyes! It’s such a great ride and I will ride it EVERY time I go to Disney Land!!

  22. icrycry says:

My Grandpa Does the Robotics at Disney World. :D

he did soo much. even down to the dog in POTC. :3
