Epic Win: Thriller

How does one go about describing how much of an epic win Thriller is? How do you synthesize all that awesome down into a few paragraphs? Is it because Thriller was one of the first mini-film music videos? Or because the choreography was so catchy that it’s been remade by countless people in weddings, video games, Legos, and even prison?

Here are just a few examples of remakes:

  1. Cat Skyfire says:

This is truly an awesome win. It might not have been that huge had it not been perfect for Halloween and with an utterly fantastic video.

  2. Motifaker says:

Yup. *sigh* i wish i was alive in the 80’s.

  3. Jessi says:

Watching Thriller and then The Making of Thriller while making pizzas at an afterschool programme when I was in the 3rd grade.

    Yep. Epic Win.

  4. Jane St.Clair says:

Why have I never been to such a cool wedding. My family is LAME. :D

  5. Nightlyeclipse says:

Great song+great choreography+Michael Jackson when he was still a black man= Epic Win made of Awesome!

  6. darksouldealer says:

i never was a michael jackson fan and when this album came out you couldnt escape it but damn…you can NEVER go wrong with vincent price…umm that was janet that played his GF…ok that aside this was an incredible video…check out the making of when they talk about the dancers when they jump…now thats skill! win win win

    • Skrolnik says:

My favorite part about Vincent Price’s involvement with this video is the fact that in the ending credits, his part is listed as:

      Featuring ‘Rap’ by
      Vincent Price

Making him one of the first white rappers on MTV.

As for my favorite remake, it would have to be the 64 Voice Acapella version: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pFAVxaEc9JQ

    • Nightlyeclipse says:

It wasn’t Janet playing his girlfriend, it was Ola Ray.

      • puppatoons says:

I remember when this came out, and my friends and I would all call each other and watch it on three-way calling, freaking out over how cool it was.
Those were the days…clothes looked like they fit, Michael Jackson was black, and MTV actually played videos.

  7. Me says:

The prison one is the BEST.

  8. Kahlest says:

And simply because I can’t resist sharing. This one was done is Second Life. Enjoy.

  9. puppatoons says:

Oh! And one Halloween soon after this came out, I went as a zombie and I had black corn syrup dripping from my mouth like the guy in the video. Dear god, it was gross, but it got quite the reactions!

  10. Hello, computer says:

This used to scare the hell outta me! I hate to admit it, but even now, at the end, when that last zombie turns around and looks at the camera, yeesh! (Stupid zombie phobia) But I always have to watch. :D

  11. varuna says:

    EPIC WIN @wedding vid. xD

  12. Victor says:

And Dancin’ Kim shows us how to do The Thriller: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=byx8kt0O_mk

Now you and your rad friends can dance just like Michael Jackson!

  13. vervain says:

The Gorillaz did it too (~2:40): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qpDer9wdUEw

  14. Nicole says:

Over 100 ‘NO’s!? Who ARE those people?!

    • Sadie Thompson says:

I’m guessing they’re the people who think he’s an insane pedophile. It’s too bad he didn’t retire from the public eye something like twenty years ago, then everybody could remember how cool he was.

  15. Vaporfic_gal says:

I’m in Austin TX and a local theater chain organized a Thrill the World event to try to break the world record for folks getting together to dance this. Last October 881 people got together and broke the record! Only in Austin :) There’s vids of it on YouTube from lots of different angles.

  16. Typhoid says:

The fact that you didn’t post the Star Wars/Vader video is CRIMINAL. Here:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SAKUT-bln4g

  17. Green Is Good says:

Damn, why can’t I go to cool wedding like that?!

  18. the below comment is how people that go on youtube feel says:

  19. the below comment is how normal people feel says:

    AWESOME!!!! nice wedding…

  20. redheaded1 says:

Thriller: Last time Michael Jackson was seen with a black woman.

It’s always been more the dance than the ’story’ or the ’song’ to me. It is an AWESOME dance number.

Love the guys at the wedding. They are TOTALLY win.

  21. Yunakitty says:

No, no, no. Epic Fail. This video still horrifies me and comes to me in nightmares, and I’m 28. And yeah, I’ve seen way worse horror stuff since then…it’s just when something is burned into your brain as the scariest thing ever when you are a kid, it never goes away or stops being scary. I can’t even hear the song without practically going into convulsions. I just cover my ears and scream, and I’m not the dramatic type at all – I truly cannot help my reaction. I remember my father taping a sign up over the stereo during the multiple Halloween parties we had – “NO THRILLER”- to advise wanna be DJs against putting the song on, so that they wouldn’t have to sedate me to continue with the party. I know it’s silly to still be terrified of it, but it’s like kids that get attacked by birds when they’re little and even as adults can’t look at feathers without breaking out in hives. So it is with me and zombie Michael Jackson…sigh…I wish I could just get over it. And yes, I’ve seen (read: been forced to watch) the Making of special to show me that it’s all pretend. DOES NOT HELP! Hate, hate, hate Thriller.

  22. Breanna says:

I learned this in my 6th grade advisory with my most favorite teacher ever, Mrs. Blair! I’m really young, 7th grade, so, It was somewhat cool.

    @Yunakitty
    wow…. talk about childhood trauma!

  23. i-swoon-for-thee says:

if i was 1 of those guys dancing,i would’ve doubled over laughing

  24. Rick3540 says:

Even tho I am a Child of the Sixties, my most favorite time of music is the 80’s. I purchased a DVD burner, subscribed to VH1 Classics, DVR each episode of “I Love the Eighties” and burn all my favorite videos. So, I have many DVDs of 80’s music. I even lucked out and captured “Fish Heads, Fish Heads, Roly Poly Fish Heads” (arguably the strangest video I have ever seen).

I have pointedly placed two videos on each disc: “Video Killed the Radio Star,” and “Thriller.”

My only complaint (and it is rather big): No credits for the dancers. I had a girlfriend who trained with several of the dancers, and she said the dancers were a bit let down to go thru all that effort (even it was a wonderful time) and not be recognized in the credits on the video. It would be nice to see your name on the screen.

  25. naeboo says:

u guys need to see this and say nowai!!!!!11 lolllll

  26. naeboo says:

oops i didnt see the prison one ald there

    sorry

  27. Kaye says:

OMG! Thriller! The Most Epic Win in HIStory….Ahh, i remember growing up in the 90’s & watching MJ videos on Pop Up Video… :-) Life was good, decent music came on tv, and being 4 helped too…

  28. amyrenee2413 says:

    http://www.facebook.com/home.php?#/video/video.php?v=236883035453

Done on Billy Barker Days…. middle of saturday afternoon :)

  29. ClariPossum says:

Has anyone else ever noticed that in Sims 2, there are a couple Thriller moves in their Smustle dance? It was a while before I noticed it, though. But I watched that wedding video and was humming, “Doh bah doh bah doh!” LoL

  30. HolidayLover says:

Hahaha my brother first saw the thriller video when he was 7 and he still jumps at the werewolf part! :-D
