Epic Win: The Carol Burnett Show

Submitted by Amanda JL

We don’t remember much about the Carol Burnett Show, however, we do remember it was hilarious and we do remember Harvey losing it during just about every sketch he was in:

  1. kashmir says:

I’m so glad we had this time together,
Just to have a laugh or sing a song,
    Seems we just get started,
    And before you know it,
Comes the time we have to say so long!

    The best Conway/Korman crack-up: “Its a koala.”

    • Nightlyeclipse says:

My absolute favorite crack up ever is the Siamese elephants. I lose it every time I watch it. Usually to the point I have tears running down my face, LOL. That show was absolute genius!

    • Failerella says:

to this day when we see a koala, everyone in my family says it that way. not that we see so many, of course. but it’s still funny.

This show is the win of all time.

  2. Mommybird says:

Dude, some of us are old enough to have watched Carol every Saturday night. My parents went out for a late dinner, and my grandmother let me stay up and watch tv till eleven o’clock. Nothing will ever be quite as funny as Carol and her friends.

  3. knecciai says:

You think it’s OK to break because Carol Burnett did it, Jimmy Fallon? You…haven’t…earned…what…she’s…earned!

    • Dave says:

      Hahahaha, nice FG reference. ;-)

The Carol Burnett Show was teh awesoem. I have very fond memories of uh-MISS-is uh-WIGG-uhns and the parody skits like Gone with the Wind, the general “mystery movie” parody, and “Mary Mary Quite Contrary.”

Wow, that’s a lot of memories flooding back at once. My head hurts.

      • Kashmir says:

When I got married, I kept my maiden name because I didn’t want to be Mrs. Wiggins. Seriously.

        • S. Wagner says:

The Mrs. Wiggins skits were some of my favorites! And Eunice’s. And As the Stomach Turns. There are just too many to choose one single one.

  4. hee hee says:

Now available on DVD… I saw a commercial for it this weekend!!! :)

  5. BAW says:

I have a set of DVDs of the best of Carol.

She was very much of her era. One couldn’t have a show like that today, to a large extent because our musical tastes are so polarized. While some of the musicians she had may have performed in styles that some people liked better than others, there were few people who disliked any of the styles enough to change channels if they didn’t like it. No so much now.

  6. Allison says:

For some reason my Aunt always reminded me of Carol Burnett. So I always get a warm toasty feeling whenever I see her on TV.

I loved that Mama’s Family spun off of Carol’s show. She played Mama’s daughter Eunice, and was such a sour-puss! I loved the clip from the C.B.Show where they were playing Sorry.

    Jiiiingle Jiiiingle Jiiingle! “Sooooorrryyyyyyy!”

    Carol Burnett is a genius!

  7. Kari says:

I had an opportunity several years ago to see Harvey Korman and Tim Conway in person — it was absolutely amazing to get to see Tim send Harvey into fits of giggles in nearly every sketch!! True comic genius! Harvey, comedy will NEVER be the same without you! <3

  8. Stick says:

I watched this so much in reruns. With SNL, All That, and this, I could have OD’d on sketch comedy.

  9. puppatoons says:

You people are putting up too much good stuff for me to take all at once!!!!

Carol Burnett show=GENUIS. Oh, god, Tim Conway as the fireman is one of the funniest TV skits of all time. I can remember my dad turning purple laughing at it.

  10. Multi-Facets says:

Mom is a huge Carol Burnett fan. She loved the show, and when I showed her and Dad the Elephant Story Blooper a couple of years ago, they laughed as hard as I did. It was the “hnorkie!” noise that really did Dad in. XD
Mom even had the chance to meet Mrs. Burnett very briefly. Back when she and Dad lived in LA, Mom worked as an OB/GYN in a hospital that would rent out space to TV shows. I believe Mrs. Burnett was playing the role of an OB/GYN herself, and Mom happened to catch her in the elevator. Mom told me she couldn’t help herself and quipped “Rough delivery?”
Carol smiled and joked “Oh, the worst.”
(giggles) I oughta tell Mom the show’s on DVD. She’s bound to pick up a couple. Thanks for mentioning it, hee hee. ^n_n^

  11. aleah says:

The ‘Gone With the Wind’ sketch with the dress made from the curtains. A classic.

    • Harvey says:

      I saw it hanging in a window & I couldn’t resist.

I can’t even type that without losing it. I remember watching the show the night that skit was on. My whole family ended up on the floor, tears streaming from our eyes, gasping for breath because we were laughing so hard!

    • D.R. says:

Yes. Single most hilarious moment in the history of television. What sealed it was the deadpan look on her face, like this was totally normal.

  12. S. Wagner says:

If you’ll notice, most of the skits that made Harvey Korman break up included Tim Conway. I remember watching all of them fight to try to keep from laughing at some of the things Tim did. They were/are all great! I miss this kind of television show, especially compared to most of the trash they show now.

    • Kahlest says:

Actually a few of years ago they did a reunion show and interviews the reason that Tim Conway was in most of the skits that broke up Harvey Korman is becuase it was Tim’s life mission to make him crack every chance he got. They were awesome, best show on television.

      • S. Wagner says:

He definitely succeeded in his mission, with the added bonus of making everyone else crack up too. Including the audience.

  13. Eden says:

This is the very definition of “Epic Win”

  14. barboid says:

Ahh, the Carol Burnett Show. My absolute favorite. You can tell they were always having fun. And Tim Conway and Harvey Korman would always compete to see who could crack the other one up first. ‘Course Tim would usually win. ^_^ I didn’t always like the Mama’s Family sketches (when they were spun off they just got meaner), but the ‘Sorry’ one was hysterical. I seem to recall a ‘Scrabble’ one as well. This show is one of my favorite memories. I was so bummed they didn’t rerun those kind beyond summer back then, glad to know they’re on DVD. And ‘Went With The Wind” classic Burnett at her very best!

    • Mommybird says:

Those Mama’s family sketches hit too close to home, didn’t they? They skated right on the edge where they made you laugh and hurt at the same time.

      • S. Wagner says:

The Mama character looked just like some of my family members. Being Southern Baptists they didn’t drink beer or cuss but it was still just like watching my relatives!

  15. House of Mayhem says:

The ‘Mama” sketch I like the best was when Eunice went on the Gong Show.

    “FEEEEEEEELIIIIIINGSSSSS! WHOAWHOAWHOA…..FEEEELINGS!”

  16. darksouldealer says:

yeah thanks to tim we got harveys giggles…any variety show would die today, but more so because she had a very talented staff and she herself was comedic genius…i miss this show..remember when family time included good tv shows?…oh well

  17. Kahlest says:

Ummm speak for your self when you say we “barely remember” this show, it was THE BEST, left me in stitches every week I STILL do some of the routines. “I’m hurring as fast as I can”

  18. Maggie says:

was the mamma sketch from the carol bernet show or from mammas family? I never watched the carol bernet show but I used to watch mammas family allll the time – reruns late at night during the summer when I was a kid

  19. ceallaig says:

Totally epic — the movie parodies were wonderful (GWTW is a classic), the guests were a lot of fun, and I will never forget the look on Carol’s face when Jimmy Stewart (her all time favorite actor) rolled onto the stage playing a piano and singing Ragtime Cowboy Joe on the series finale. I miss the variety shows, and this was one of the best ever.

  20. Tboz says:

All that everyone has written here about this Great American Classic & EPIC WIN is true! There has never been a greater show! It always made me laugh until I cried & hurt–this show was better than any amusement park ride & I loved watching it every week! I wish the shows on tv today were this great–but they are so far away–not even in the same ballpark as these actors/comedians. I want to remember to ask for the dvd’s for Christmas this year! Last year I got Johnny Carson/The Tonight Show–another great show that often had me laughing & crying at the same time! But the dvd’s were a disappointment. Anyone have any info about The Carol Burnett Show’s dvd’d? Good ones, bad ones, whole shows or skits? Thanks for this memory!
