Epic Win: Superfudge

Submitted by Christine R
In Superfudge Judy Blume introduced us to situations that a lot of us experienced at one point in our lives, but isn’t addressed in a lot of other literature for children that age. It ruined Santa Claus for a lot of us, but it was totally worth it. Did she ruin Santa Claus for you?

Judy Blume not only introduced me to Margaret & her conversations with God & how to increase her bust size, she also introduced me to “Ralph”, page 85 of her book “Forever” (yes I actually remember the page).
That changed me MUCH more than Superfudge ever did.
I’m 32 and still haven’t read “Forever.” Neither the school library nor my town’s public library carried it! Probably way too controversial for conservative east TX. I managed to read all the other Judy Blume books that were offered, though.
It was all about the Fudge series for me
FIVE YEAR OLD FLATTENED BY ROLL AWAY BED!
Oh wow.. thank you so much for that XD
Why “Superfudge” as opposed to “Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing,” which is the first book in the series? Not saying it’s a bad choice; I’m just wondering what this book has that the other in the same series don’t.
Perhaps “Superfudge” is more recognizable? It’s odd, but I read that before “Tales of a Forth Grade Nothing” LoL. I hadn’t a clue they were the same story at first. I remember I read the latter simply because I was about to start fourth grade. ^_^
oh judy blume, how i love thee. i also love her books for adults. summer sisters is the best!
Good comment utaduta
Yes! I’m a teacher and I just finished reading “Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing” with a group of students! The kids totally loved it, especially the end. They’ve already started on SuperFudge, but alas, I have to miss out on that one.
Bless you, sir or madam….I was first exposed to “Tales” and “Superfudge” when my teachers read them aloud to the class. It’s nice to know that kids are still being exposed to quality literature that’s actually aimed at them.
And yeah, I still own copies of those books….and about five or six other kid-oriented Blume books that I recall fondly….and the Bunnicula series (well, the first three, anyway)….etc……what of it? Even if I can now read most of them straight through in an afternoon, they’re still good reading.
Jeez, you should submit Bunnicula for OUAW! I loved those too, and my stepson started reading them this past school year. Did you know the author has come out with a new one since we were kids? I had no idea.
I am 39 now and when I was a young teen, Judy Blume books were not around in the UK. I used to send my American Friends Enid Blyton books and they would send me Judy Blume books. Tales.. was the first Judy Blume book I read.
My (now 19 year old) son read all the Fudge books and my (now 12 year old) son has also read them all.
Happy, happy memories!
my favorite was always then again, maybe i won’t. but nobody ever talks about that one.
ahh Judy Blume everthing…. still have them.
Big eye-opener when a classmate gave me Wifey (I knew it wasn’t for kids) when I was 13. Superfast education in that one though.
Lets see if I remember this…
“F-u-d-g-e spells Fudge,
P-e-t-e-r spells Peter,
B-e-e-r spells Whiskey”
I LOVED all of the Fudge books. Hell, I loved all of Judy Blume’s books. Now if you’ll excuse me, I need to catch up on my reading.
M-A-I-N-E spells Maine!
Ahhhh I remember that line! It always made me laugh!
Oh, and wasn’t it, “P-e-t-e-r spells Pee-tah”?
What do you mean Santa’s not real?!
My second grade teacher read us the entire Fudge series! I loved every singe one of them!
I was just thinking about these the other day!
Aaawwww… Let’s all go make turtle soup now.
Wifey…ah good times good times…I remember sneaking that from a friend’s mom’s drawer to read the realy naughty bits.
Finally read the whole book a few years ago & it’s very dated. Like a bad 70s swinger flick.
Shep.
LOL. I love Judy Blume. And coincidentally, I checked out “Forever” just this afternoon from the library! I didn’t see Superfudge there, or I would have got that.
i seem to remember a little brother swallowing a turtle…..
Yup. That’s why Peter then got a beagle…
I loved Judy Blume’s books. I still remember random sentences from “Blubber” that pop into my head for no reason. The last sentence is something like “Her mother must be very proud.”
hmmm…either i watched a “superfudge” tv show when i was a kid or my overly active imagination is making me think i did…..
i did love the books too
There was a “Fudge” TV show in the 90’s. Jan Brady was his mother!
There’s a “Fudge-A-Mania” movie on Hulu! Two hours! For free!
My fifth grade teacher, Mrs. Hill, read this out loud to us in class over a period of a few months.
“You will eat it or you will WEAR it!”
I was already suspicious about Santa, but this book confirmed it for me when I was 8.
I then felt it was absolutely necessary to share this information with my 5 year-old brother.
Love these books! Made me believe that “miser” was not a real word.
Loved love LOVED this book when I was a kid. Definite epic win. It didn’t ruin Santa Claus for me, I already knew.
I remenber being forced to read this in 4th grade…I HATED IT.
I must have read Tales of a Fourth Grade nothing about a hundred times!
And Superfudge didn’t ruin Santa for me; I never believed in Mr. Claus anyway.
The copy of ‘Forever’ in our school library had all the naughty bits underlined in blue biro. Actually, I think it’s in my private library now…
Holy crap. I hadn’t even THOUGHT of this book in ages, and I somehow remembered some of the storyline just from the name. I remembered a turtle and that was about it.
She didn’t necessarily ruin Santa, but she did introduce me to the Hanukkah fairy.
Yeah, I don’t remember anything about Santa in this book, but I do remember the Chanukkah Fairy.
Also, if you teach your pet Mynah how to speak, there’s a chance he’ll teach you how to fly! And if that doesn’t work, see if your new friend was adopted. There’s a chance he’s one of the refugees from planet Krypton and he might take you flying!
“Toot-toot-tootsie, goodbye!”
God, such an awesome series. I used to even have the Superfudge movie. They need to make more books.
Oh man, I loved the first book Tales. I am an older sibling and I always had the utmost sympathy for Peter.
As the oldest child myself, I remember thinking Fudge could use a good spanking.
My mom hid this book from me until I learned about Santa on my own. Then she gave it to me and I could finally have closure on the Fudge series!
But there were more Fudge books after this. At least one, “Fudge-a-mania.”
